QUOTE(koolspyda @ Jun 13 2011, 10:53 AM) tommy smith was a hard tough player, even when he was playing for the opposition (post liverpool) he was just as tough in tackles against us. "the core for the future stays british" i'm pretty sure this is for mid-to-long term vision that is in line with FSG's tangent for the club. Often the british players aren't or not as sought after abroad so any shake up of the team won't be seismic scale my guess. Thing is that these days, the signing of British players aren't as coveted as foreign wonder kids. Forget the price tag for awhile. I mean Jordan Henderson was rated at $20 million which is the same amount rumoured for Juan Mata. Which name brings about more excitement. Anyway, my point is that while the players that King Kenny has shortlisted may not tantalise our taste buds, they have at least proven that they can cut it in English football. A safe bet if I could call it that. We've now upped our offer for Phil Jones to $22 million. It's been awhile since we've been able to go toe-to-toe with the mancs in the transfer market eh? Tommy Smith was indeed hard, but fair. I just loved reading his autobiography just as I do any player who just so happens to be a Liverpool fan. As football evolved, old school centrebacks like him were expected to play from the back more. On one occasion, he was up against a pretty good forward whose names escapes me at the moment. He asked Shanks, "should I take the ball out to his left or to his right?". As usual, Shanks responded immediately by going, "just go through him!".

OT but I just got to watch "The Damned United". Has anyone else watched this. Thoroughly enjoyed it. No, not MAN Utd but Leeds Utd. Never knew what Brian Clough was like in his younger days and now I do. He's football's version of Mohammad Ali. For people that think Mourinho had a big ego, you gotta watch this. Here is a man who tool Derby County from the bottom of the 2nd Division to the then 1st Division title and the final of the European Cup. His time at Leeds was short lived for certain reasons but he then took Nottingham Forest from Div 2, to becoming back to back European champions. This all and he never managed England. A recommended watch. Attached thumbnail(s)

Still wonder why cant Paisley get the same recognition outside liverpool and its fans?

Still wonder why cant Paisley get the same recognition outside liverpool and its fans? Paisley was a little different I imagine. He wasn't as verbal and flashy. Also, his contribution is undermined by Shankly's success, having inherited a legacy. Clough (and Peter Taylor) rebuilt teams much like Shankly did. Only, the latter did it three times at Liverpool! I believed he only had 1 trophy-less season in his 9 year reign. and you are right, he's a quite and humble man.. no surprise he didn't get much attention from the press. and who could forget that he's the one who bring in Kenny after Keegan left.

I agree with you dude. Paisley certainly deserves more recognition that he gets but Shankly was and still is bigger than life. It was virtually impossible for anyone to step out from under his shadow. It got so bad to the extent that even though Paisley was manager, the players would still call Shankly, "boss", whenever he visited Melwood or Anfield. Led to Shankly being 'convinced' to stay away. I can see the logic behind it though.

I can see the logic behind it though. This was the time Shanks started to regret his decision to resigned. I believe it was the right decision to tell Shanks that he is not the boss and cant come to the training session anymore. The player got confused on who exactly is the boss; either Shanks or Paisley. Which put Paisley in a difficult situation and hard to apply his method on the team. Would it stay that way, the outcome would not be very good. That being said, the treatment Shanks got from the club after he left is horrible and the club should have conducted it with a better way. "Tough love" comes to mind but the man deserve a whole better.. heck, even Everton treated him better that LFC that time.

Those idiots fans from our rivals who laughed at Suarez for not getting a medal when Ajax won the league QUOTE But the 24-year-old earned a championship medal having scored seven goals in his 13 appearances for the Dutch giants. But he added: ' I did get a medal but I’d be the first person to say that the league title was down to the rest of the team and Frank de Boer, the manager. I watched the match between Spain n England this morning. You know just to see how our newly signed player n those who are linked to us perform.
Henderson - He played ok in a deeper role. Was guilty of losing possession I think maybe twice. Always demands the ball and make himself available for pass. I would say he is a raw version of Gerrard. I don't think he should be in our first 11 yet. I hope Kenny knows what is needed for him to improve his game.
Potential signing/Rumour Mata - Very good playing in an advanced role in midfield. More of a team player n very comfortable playing with team with stressing on possession and passing football. Had a few chances to score. Good skills.
Jeffren - Just ok. Played on the right flank. Did not have significant contribution.
Special mention Javi Martinez (Bilbao) - I know we are not linked to him. But I'm very impressed with his display. Played in the same role as Xabi and very much reminded me of him. Calm n composed on the ball and controlled the midfield well. Linked up between defenders and forwards.
Walker (Spurs) - He was among the few threats from England team. He is fast n caused problem to Spanish defense. His run on the right created the equaliser for England. Good assist too.
Jones - Not very impressed with him. Look slow and sometimes struggle to turn around.

I guess poulsen aqua cole will definitely be out. That leaves gerrard, raul, leiva, jay, henderson, jonjo and soon adam. That leaves us with 7midfielders. I think jonjo will go on loan. So we will probably have 6 midfielders for the season. Too early to guess the formations though. Hopefully we do a barnes for our wings.
