Hi,

There is a major disconnect between our education and the job market. Our education resulted in certificates but the job market only care about capabilities. Capabilities means ability to do something. For example,

1 ) Ability to sale almost anything

2) Ability to market almost anything

3) Ability to communicate in English

4) Ability to listen

5) Ability to troubleshoot problem.

6) Ability to read

7) Ability to write

8) Ability to lead a team of people to accomplish a task.

Having cert or experience mean absolutely nothing if those two items do not result in any kind of capability. For example, if someone has a cert in marketing but that person has no idea on how to market anything. That cert is useless..

We have too many people pursuing cert but did not cultivate their capabilities.

does that mean that preference will be on the individual itself ? .....

getting the job done and knows how to go around to get the job done is two different matter. Certs shows that you have the knowledge, to market it needs expierence.

eveyone has to start somewhere. If I find that the person has the capability but need some polishing, without any doubts i take them under my wings.

least you know the potential is there..

Hi,

Does a manager really care whether you are

"getting the job done and knows how to go around to get the job done" ??

The answer is no as long as the job is done.

"Certs shows that you have the knowledge"

Somehow, I am not really convince about that especially on the IT field..

"eto market it needs expierenc"

Market needs capability to do the job. If the experience helps, then it is fine.. Given that the technology evolves so fast, a person will most likely be doing a lot of new things aka things that he/she has no experience in.

i know little about IT field, but in specific industries certification is vital.

Not that i support expierence over certificaation, but that's just the way of the world.... least in the part where i work it does.

Hi,

Unfortunate fact of life is that, if a manager assign a task to A and A get B to do it, the manager may not know or cares as long as the task is done on time with quality.

As far as I know, BSC and KPI measure result and quality of the result. It does not ensure that everybody do their job with their own effort.

in a way it does reflect, cause its cascade down from top down.

my organisation is using it.

if course there are loopholes but at the end of the day the results shown reflect the whole department.

KPI's, BSC's are all basically putting to paper what people do on their day to day job. It's to make handover's easier and also gauging the performance of an employee. It's like cpu-Z, taking humans as machines.

It's just another measurement where it just gives more jobs for a person to do i.e. compile the darn KPI, etc. a lot of companies have misused a LOT of things that are available on the pretense that they are creating something which would create better performing results. However, some companies do not see the con's of creating such a system even though it's popular here.

We're asians and have asian values, So in terms of KPI, would you sack the pakcik who has been the security guard for the past 30 years in teh company? His KPI obviously would be damn low. If that's the case then the HR dept is not really doing their job in looking after the company. And when I say the company it means it's staff treat the company as your own. it's a family. Instill this and well you would not have to worry much.

Companies use measurement systems when they realise that they are losing out on the market share and need to figure out who's doing what. Which IMHO is a lil bit too late sometimes.

pachik's KPI wont be low as his JD has been pre determined at the begining of each year, if he achieve his KPI, why would he be sack ?

IMHO, its never too late, if we are always on the skeptical end, we never move ahead.

BSC and KPI are determined from top down and not by the HR alone.

well, i dunno what is BSC and KPI, but mind to share, actually, a manager or a company want their employees to get a job done with the shortest time, lowest expenses rite? then when the manager ask back to A on how well he/she completed the job, and if the A get B to completed the job for A...then the A sure will "mulut ternganga lor"?

I wonder if this is the right place to ask:

I had been applying for jobs in other other companies, while at the same time still working in my current company. Problem is: I always get miss calls (which i think could be interviewer asking me to go for interview) whenever I had discussion with my boss or having a meeting.. sad.gif When I tried to call back, I could not get through the number, so i guess it's a company's random number... HAppen a few times already

So I wanna post question to those who are used to interviewing people.. Will you still go on contacting your candidates if you can't reach him for first or second time??

Thanks

Hi,

I do not like to call people for that reason. I normally will e-mail someone. However if I cannot reach someone by phone, I will e-mail the person instead.

Hi,

Amazon.com has free e-book too.. You still did not tell me which area that you are interested in. For each area, there are probably some web site that provide great informations.

There are free magazines too.

Hi,

For any subject that you are looking for, you could google for the free article/magazine that talk about that subject. I do not know of any free e-book site but you could google for that.

i recommend "what color is your parachute" as a good reading. Not that they pay me to promote them, the book actually helps people to create a path that leads to the career they want. but i some of the exercises needs to be done in a group, if not, you can't achieve the what the exercises was meant for

Can you recommend a comprehensive aptitude online test? Quiz that figures out our interests and shows us job opportunities in areas of our interest. I've taken many of these tests in papers and online and one of the careers which I finally opted for was EE. Now I don't feel like a good EE at all. I'm losing confidence in myself.

Ignorance is the path to knowledge.

A good EE is a person that likes to solve problem. Do you like to solve problem??

No, I don't like to solve problems. When the maths becomes partial differential equations, or some series, it's too abstract and takes too long for me to solve. I could take one day to one week to solve an engineering course problem in the past. I think the good EE is expected to do it within the hour. I guess a good EE must be a Mensa member.

I don't like to do things where I don't receive feedback about my work. Such as I don't know how long I'll take to solve my engineering problem because I don't know whether I'm correctly working towards the answer. I don't like to feel lost, like I didn't know what the right answer was, and how to derive it. I don't like that I was expected to be independent in Uni, because how independent was I expected to be? If I had to figure out myself how solve my textbook problems, then I might as well not go to Uni, might as well have taken a distance learning degree course.

I'm really an unskilled EE. I'm trying to improve my skills by learning my course on my own time, all over again. But I still feel lost, just like in the past.

You find the nearest club to your place by searching on http://www.toastmasters.org/
You can attend the club as a guess first and see hows its like first. There are quite a number of clubs open to public around kl. While some mnc do have their own closed toastmaster club

Yes...there are many toastmaster club in the klang valley available for you. If you work in KL you might want to attend the club located in KL. Currently I am attending the club located at Taman SEA PJ. I am a VP Public Relation so my job is to go clubbing. icon_idea.gif . There is one club wher they held their meeting in a club....Yes literally a club where you have to pay cover charge...Happening la. Im addition to that there is also tostmaster held in mandarin and bahasa melayu. But it will not be recognised internationally. The international speaking competition uses English.

Hi,

I'm in toastmasters Cyberjaya district. Feel free to drop if you want to learn more about the club smile.gif

True enough, it drills your leadership & communication skills. If you put your efforts into it you will find it working.

But if you're the self-confident person who has the mentality of "I'm good enough and this is bullsh*t", then I'm afraid there's no room for improvement for you.

Like they say from the Zen teachings:
"The hardest obstacle to learning something new, is the belief that you already know it"

Very useful book I found earlier this year.
A lot of unconventional wisdom and overall good advice for any jobhunters or people planning on a total change of career. Although it looks as if it's targeted to American readers at first, you'll see that things inside actually works for most MNCs in Malaysia, as per what a couple of friends in different MNCs HR departments told me.

The Countess reckons instead of just going round and round, it's better to ask those with real exposure at higher levels.

you all might want try getting in touch with real people who already achieved managerial level and above who can share their real experience with you. It is very important to know various methods to work your way to the top, NETWORK and also learn something about office politics (like it or not, it exists in every office, can't run away)

I've been checking out this forum here and it sounds like the people there got some business linkage that may be of help:

Never rush in getting a job.

Don't feel compelled to get a job asap, think first before landing into the job.

If the interviewer/your future employer looks down on you or say things that are meant to down grade you and questioned your qualification,
never take up the job.

I have friends who are pressured to get a job and despite the harsh things that the interviewer said to him, took up the job. Besides him,
there are a group of others who took up the job with him.
Now they are all under a contract that is unfair to them and are constantly threaten if they are said to have under-performed.

Being stuck in a place you don't enjoy especially having harsh and unkind words said to you is surely not the job you want to land up with.

The interviewer made them believe that they are very lucky ones be choosen and how many others out there who are jobless.
How many of those out there would hoped for this job. How thankful they
should be because the company is willing to take them.

I have a similar experience. The interviewer on one hand told me how qualified and good I am while on the other questioned the marketability of my degree, saying that there isnt much future for me in any field. He told me how difficult it was to find a job and especially for someone with a degree in physics like myself. How futureless I would be out there.

That was my first interview after I graduated. Imagine, anyone who just got of school, desperate out for a job, uncertain about their career path.
Then someone so manipulative came in, talk all these things into their head. You can just easily walked out of the place, thinking about how useless you are in your current state.

And the pay that comes with the job was so little. Thank God I did not take it up. As I was going back, I felt so terrible but I cannot accept that my life is so restricted, that I am helpless in where I am.

Two weeks later I got a job that pays 75% more. All my interviews, I got the job and they all paid equally well. And six months later, I got another job that pays me double!
If I were to listen to that person, I would definately be helpless
and in misery.

So...
NEVER rush.
NEVER let others make you feel helpless and useless.
NEVER give up
Keep on trying
Dont restrict yourself
And BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

a little sidetrack, a good book for everyone to pick up is The Business Coach. a good read, not for its literature strength, but for its ideas on running a business.

reading this will allow you some ideas on how some of the companies are being run as they are and why. but more importantly it helps you to see systems from different perspectives.

i like the fact that the ideas of the book are relevant in our daily lives, such as having vision and mission, and the concept of test and measure to determine how are we doing at this point of time.

during the interview, dun be shy to ask ur questions. ask questions to let them see u are interested in the job. learn what body language u should avoid during interview. Its also help alot. smile.gif

thanks for putting out such good words. I always feel that others are landing into job positions while im nowhere to begin with, im graduating this coming august with a degree in management but i always feel like im useless as every time i applied for something i tend to be left out of the group that the employer responded to. Sometimes i get shorlisted, but in the end the whole thing just fades away...like the intern that i applied for at motorola, first i was there with 5 other people in the shorlisted group, but then they just abandon the application status and people started withdrawing, till the dateline there was no answer, no clarification whatsoever.

Sometimes i get offer from people who blame that freshies are worthless coz what they need are experienced graduates and begin to belittle people so much that i begin to believe that the world is so harsh and cruel.

I'll not rush, I'll keep on trying and I'm gonna downplay people who look down on me and makes me feel useless.

thanks smile.gif

*
Well you start to sound like a process engineer. Ever though of becoming one? Basically a process engineer thinks about how the product and part is supposed to be manufactured. Then get everyone together and trash out the ideas. No need solve engineering maths or stuff, you have vendors and suppliers for the nitty gritty, but you will need good understanding of your process capability and have datas that they will need to proposed a solution to your problem.

If all EE engineer in Malaysia is a Mensa member, we will be better than Singapore and Japan put together. icon_rolleyes.gif

Perhaps its worth going for and attain professional certification and go for a job market which the pay scale is high,
Example go for IT industry. for start and boost in your career go for Service Desk carrier.

Some Important Resume preparation tips

* Don't overcrowd your resume; allow for plenty of white space.

* Keep your resume to one page whenever possible.

* Keep the number of fonts you use to a minimum -- two at the most.

* Use a font that is easy to read. Times Roman works well.

* Do not justify the lines of type on your resume. Allow the right side of the page to "rag."

* Do not overuse capitalization, italics, underlines, or other emphasizing features.

* Make sure your name, address, and a phone number appear on your resume and all correspondence, preferably at the top of the page.

* Print your resume on white or cream paper using a good-quality printer.

* Second- and third-generation photocopies must be avoided

* Print on one side of the paper only.

All too true. The interviewer won't waste time flipping through an 'essay' on your life, expertise and other stuff. Piling everything into a resume is going to result in them skipping over the important parts and getting the bad stuff...

Keeping it simple and straight to the point is the best way to go. Don't piss em off by wasting their time and yours.

Thanks

it's just perhaps

Wow, a really resourceful thread wink.gif

Well, after reading books or online info, and discussing with friends or some seniors, there is a need to really think what you really want and how u want to get there. There is no 1 absolute method and path suitable for everyone.

A good resource for information related to Career and Education can be found here. I believe the content there is quite beneficial; it consists of interview techniques, career advice, success stories and many more. It would certainly be useful to fresh graduates and job seekers. Highly recommended!

Hi,

I am starting a thread on useful resources, FAQ, useful on jobs/careers.  Please post any hints/information relating find jobs, office politics and so on.  For those people with plenty of job experience, please post information that will help fresh graduates to adapt to a working life.

The following web site is very useful:

www.asktheheadhunter.com

It has information on how to look for jobs, negotiating salary, how to resign and how to handle interview.

otherwise,

You DO NOT write a letter to ask for salary increment. You go and talk to YOUR BOSS.

Have you personally went up to your boss and ask for an increment? If yes, were you successful? Why were you successful/unsuccessful ?

OR

Since you are in a managerial position, has anyone came up to you and ask for an increment? What were among the questions you asked them why they want an increment?

The point I'm asking this questions is to anticipate and understand how employers react to situations like this. Since you pointed out that we do not need to write a letter to our employers but instead go up to them and ask for it, I assume you may have some experience in this matter. Hope you can share it with us in detail. Thanks

kelvin_tan,

XYZ project brought in $$$ amount of revenue for this division. A had been promoted because of this. Given that I am a key person in making this happen, I pointed out this to our GM and said that I deserve a pay raise plus bonus.

This is NOT in the right time of the year for pay raise. So, I got my pay raise later. However, I got a SPECIAL BONUS out of this.

YOU need to be able to justify and quantify YOUR CONTRIBUTION to the company success.

Good luck & stay confident smile.gif

I felt exactly the same way, was feeling kinda rushed to get a job. But then when I came across what you said, it made a lot of sense.. luckily i found this smile.gif

Any lawyers around can advise the following:

Is it legal or illegal for an employer not to sign employment contract with its employees?

I know one company doesnt have employment contract with its employees... what legal implications are there on the employees without an employment contract?

What advantage does this give to the employer? is it that the employer can choose not to pay them or fire them at will?

Another - "Dont know this is the correct thread" post

Some background: I applied 2 position in this company 9 months ago and I successfully got one of it and got confirmed last month,

but last week my HR called one of my referee (he is my fren) to ask about my performance and some reference check.

But I had just finished my probation in this company. Is this usual for HR to cross reference? Or they are looking at my other application without knowing I am already in the company.

Here are some tips from Adecco, Malaysia's leading HR solutions company.

Finally, you got your dream job and tomorrow will be the start of your first week of work. Regardless of your type of employment (temporary or permanent), you need to show your employer that you are the right person for the job.

Timeliness
Show your enthusiasm about the job by being punctual or early. Your employer will be impressed with this positive attitude.

Listen and pay attention

Your employers will conduct an orientation session to brief you on the job scope and the company’s systems and procedures. Listen and take notes to ensure that you understand everything. Employers would like to see how fast his new staff could learn.

Take initiative

Take the initiative to ask good and relevant questions. A new employee tends to lack confidence and
is uncertain to take initiative whenever they can. Make your mark by showing that you are not afraid to ask.

Stand and deliver
You want your boss to see that you are a valuable addition to the company. Do this by completing your tasks quickly and efficiently. Ask him politely if you really need a deadline extension, but try to avoid this situation as much as you can.

Respond quickly
Show your diligence and enthusiasm by responding quickly whenever your boss asks you to act on something. This will assure him that you are the right person he hired.

Be proactive

If you sense an expected difficulty coming up, act in advance to deal with it by being proactive.

Be observant
It is important that you observe your surroundings and try to learn as much as you can, as the first few weeks is your learning stage.

Be resourceful and meticulous
It is perfectly normal if you make mistakes in the learning stage, therefore you have to be meticulous about your work to minimise them. Depending on the nature of your job, you may be expected to be resourceful as well, so be prepared.

Be a team player
Show your boss that you can get along well with your co-workers. Employers are looking for people who can communicate well with staff of all levels. However, avoid being too chatty, as this will give the impression that you never do your work. It is important to have a balance.

Be open to new ideas
This is important, especially if your job requires you to work in a team. Avoid being rigid. Instead, open your mind to new ideas.

Be friendly

Firstly, you have to understand and adapt quickly to the corporate culture. You need to be friendly and try to fit in as quickly as possible. Ask if you could join your colleagues when they go for lunch.

“Passion”, not “obligation”
Your employer wants to see how serious you take your job and how much effort you are willing to put in. Treat your job as a passion instead of an obligation.

Seek avenues to make a difference
Suggest ways to improve the business or to achieve new results by using your previous experiences. Avoid being too forceful on your ideas though, as you do not want your boss to mistake your enthusiasm for criticism.

Avoid office politics
You are still getting the lie of the land. If someone gossips about a co-worker, find a way to change the subject. Getting involved in office politics will risk your image in the eyes of your bosses, and could ultimately affect your job.

Avoid clock-watching Be the first in the door but avoid watching the clock until it is time to leave the office. Leave when your daily tasks are completed and your work space is clean and tidied up.

1) Pay is base on your negotiation skills.
2) Differentiate between experience and related experience as they can determine how much pay you get.

Direct answer to your question. Most likely a slight increase as you had gain 1 year working experience.

In Jobstreet, sometimes the employer included the company's email in their job advertisement.

If that's the case, is it better if I apply through Jobstreet or directly send my resume to their email?

Any unemployed fresh graduates out there? Why not take up some government funded programs to upgrade your skills, at the same time being paid with allowance? Upon completing the course, there will be industrial attachment with companies for about 3 months. Perhaps through the attachment, the company may absorb you guys as permanent staff.

Reverse Mentoring Turns Tables on Tradition
Mentoring has long been recognized as an effective workplace practice and positive experience — a way for veteran professionals to pass on industry and organizational knowledge to less tenured colleagues. But more companies are turning the formula around and finding that it’s just as constructive to have expertise and insights flowing up the hierarchical ladder.

Known as reverse mentoring, the trend involves pairing more experienced professionals – often, managers – with employees of younger generational groups, especially members of Generation Y, who tend to be at the cutting edge of all things technology related. Managers are being schooled by newer members of the workforce on everything from the ins and outs of social media to Gen Y’ers’ perspectives on career and work.

While negotiation skill and interview performance play a large role in determining new salary, companies usually give a higher pay for your one year of experience and as an incentive for you to join them. How much higher? That depends on your qualifications and interview skill.

English language practitioners, educators and parents can pick up practical and simple activities that will increase student involvement at the three-day Johor English Language Seminar on Writing and Speaking in Johor Baru from Oct 29 to Oct 31.

Jointly organised by JB English Language Teaching (JELTA) and Johor State Education department, the seminar provides ELT practitioners with an avenue for sharing their knowledge and ideas on writing and speaking.

M Suites Hotel is sponsoring the venue, meals for participants and accommodation for speakers as part of its social responsibility commitment to education.

The seminar will focus on diverse issues within ELT and English as a Second Language, such as creative and innovative methodology, curricular and material design innovations, as well as critical thinking and creativity in English language teaching and learning.

Other topics that will be covered during the seminar -- to be officiated by New Straits Times (NST) managing editor Datuk Nuraina Samad -- include developing vocabulary and structural accuracy.

Former NST Johor bureau-chief Ravi Nambiar will show participants how to write a press release that is "useful, accurate and interesting", whereas NST rewrite executive A. Kathirasen, a journalist of 37 years, will give pointers on Writing Effective Letters to the Editor.

Lucille Dass, a former Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturer, will present a paper on Whither the Voice of English. This plenary paper illustrates how teachers can create purposeful and enjoyable speaking activities that allow students to "discover their lost voice in English".

Trainer Irfan Rahman, who has 20 years of experience teaching English all over the world, will deliver a workshop on Speak Your Mind, in which he shares tips for encouraging students to speak in the classroom and solving any problems that may occur in teaching non-native learners to speak.

Education Ministry's Teaching English Language and Literacy mentor and teacher trainer Maureen Parker, meanwhile, will introduce Jazz Chants, a popular method for helping students with pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and grammar.

Parker will also demonstrate some successful ways to make the language classroom more student-centred and engaging.

Registration fee is RM130 for government school teachers and RM200 for other participants.

To register, call Rosnah Rahim at 017-790-5426 or fax 07-224-4737.

Dear all,

I need your helpful advice.
I have been offered a quite well paid job, through a recruitment agency. However the pre-condition for such an offer is that I have to pay this agency some commission equivalent to the two months' salary.
My question is :--- In my year end declaration for personal income tax (It is quite obvious that the new income will attract a substantial amount of income tax), can I deduct the commission from my employment income, thereby attracting lesser tax? Is this allowable under the current income tax practice?
Can some good advice be had, please.

If you're looking for certification training like Six Sigma Green Belt and Project Management Professional (PMP), you can visit MalaysiaTraining.net. They've more other corporate training courses like Soft Skills, Human Resource & Business Management, Manufacturing Operation, and Health & Safety training. Even photography and yoga training also got. But MalaysiaTraining.net is not a training provider, they're just an online corporate training directory and resources for you to easily find and request for training quotation or register public training event online. You can find a list of corporate training providers to contact also.

Hope this helps.

Employers use a lot of LinkedIn nowadays to align with the technological advances in our generation. It would help to always keep your LinkedIn profile updated. Gotten many calls from potential employers who found my resume on LinkedIn.

There are many samples you can easily find online.

But that is not the point. The point is that employers are now taking to LinkedIn as well to source for talent. Hence, job seekers should leverage on this platform too.

Or is there any group that you joined that caused you to have so many people "headhunt" you? laugh.gif

Linkedin is pretty effective - a lot of recruiters are on there sourcing talent but dont just wait to be found - follow industry profiles and blogs to stay updated. To get intel for local companies, forums like here or sites like officeparrots.com have some employee insight. A lot of companies and career resources are also surprisingly also on twitter & fb and its fast and easy to select what you wanna read.

Hi there,

Just wanted to share a new career platform called www.OfficeParrots.com. You can go on the website to read up on companies you may be interested to work in through the reviews that former and current employees have written. You can also find out about the salary of a certain job position, and the interview process of the company.

One quick question. Is there any ways to remove to "no show" status @ Jobstreet other than creating another account?

The employer have the rights to put there, but that does not mean we will behave like that to all the employer? Is there any time frame of that thing appear or it is permanent?

Hi Peeps,

I have been out of the job search scene for a few years now. Was just wondering, besides linkedin (which I keep a really good profile and log in almost 2-3 times a week) and jobstreet, are there any other channels that I could be looking at? The others I usually go to are the recruiters - get them interested in me. I have stopped using the newspapers for many years already.

any assistance greatly appreciated. mid to senior level manager positions

Canadian company lands in Malaysia with many job openings

Now those seeking a job vacancy have another tool. The Canadian company Neuvoo.com launched its newest version http://my.neuvoo.com in Malaysia.

The Neuvoo that has global knowledge in the field knows to look for a vacancy is one of the most stressful aspects of a candidate. Thus the Neuvoo optimized these job openings that are scattered on the internet so you do not miss out on search time. Therefore several job vacancies from various web-sites and companies are aggregated into a single portal, all to make life much easier candidates.

Neuvoo platform is newly arrived in Malaysia and already added more than 50,000 jobs available already and listed on our website from different companies. Neuvoo is basically a Google of free jobs.

Now it will not go more than a few minutes instead of hours searching the web for a job opening. Another distinguishing feature of Neuvoo is, in addition to thousands of jobs for you, no paperwork is required to apply, let alone having to pay to view the desired position.

You know you're looking for a better job, looking for an internship job in a good company or simply your first job, you can find here: Neuvoo Malaysia (http://my.neuvoo.com/).

Do not spend more time, days and even weeks looking for a job on the internet. Already visit the newness of the job search market in Malaysia and get the job before your competitor.

Malaysia welcome Neuvoo and we wishes good luck to all applicants rclxms.gif !

Hi guys, my travelling claim for each month usually is paid 3 months late. Is this normal? Is there a law saying company must pay within a month or earlier? If more than 3 months can we complain to labor office?

3 months is a bit too long unfortunately there's no law germane to this issue. Not sure if this is a norm for your Finance Dept? sad.gif

Anyone know what the 'blue bag' icon means on JobStreet?

For example : Min 1 year (junior executive)

Does that mean I need to have minimum 1 year experience as junior executive OR the contract for the work is minimum 1 year?

This site is also very helpful

www.iweconnect.com

More descriptions at
https://iweconnect.com/blogs/view_blogs/226...et_the_best_job

It is one of the few that allow employers to search for employees for free. Not restriction on whether it's full time/partime. Just put in keywords.
It is also one of the few where employees can customize their site like mini-website/blog. It also let others to recommend them. If a lot of people recommend them, the credibility increased.

Can find build online career profile and find job.

Seriously, I think the mod should just delist this thread. Everyone is posting advertisements (even though a separate thread exists to cater to that). Drowning users with legitimate cause for seeking helpful advices for profit driven business offerings is both immoral and deplorable

In 2016, professional poker player Haseeb Qureshi famously leveraged offers from Google, Yelp, and Uber to land a $ 240k starting salary at Airbnb. That is more or less double the starting pay of a software engineer fresh out of bootcamp. Condensing his tips here for anyone interested, his original articles are published on Medium for a more comprehensive guide.

Express your keen interest in the opportunity, but never take the first offer that comes your way. Politely ask instead to discuss the specific details of the offer whether in-person, over the phone, or via email. Whichever method works best for your confidence.

Never state outright a salary range that you are expecting. Why should anyone be expected to indicate a package that works for them in the absence of vital information about a company’s salary benchmarks, bonus payout, yearly increment, stock options, vacation policy, work flexibility, parental benefits, etc.?

Instead, be honest about where you’re at currently salary-wise and what salary surveys point to as the benchmark pay for this position. Mention that you’d need more specific details about the company’s compensation policy to make an informed decision about what you are comfortable with. Also, that you are in the midst of interviewing at other firms.

Time your job applications so that offers happen at more or less the same window. Offers can and do have a deadline. The strongest leverage you will have is multiple offers on the table, better yet with competitors of this organization. Scarcity always creates demand.

The Big Ask: So you’ve been presented with the offer and all necessary details around and about it. You’ve weighed the pros and cons of taking this one offer versus another. You lean more favorably towards this one offer because you’re excited about the opportunity or company. Now’s the time to ask, with as much care and politeness as you can possibly muster. Now’s the time to be specific about what it is exactly that you want. Gently mention your other offers, remind the employer again why you are excited and are such a great fit for them.

Better yet, offer valid reasons for why a better salary package helps you achieve specific goals you have in life, financial or otherwise. Do you need to pay off student loans, start a family, finance your MBA, or support your parents? Cite actual reasons to recruiters as they are probably why you are asking for more in the first place.

Don’t be the sole decision-maker when buying for more time to consider the opportunity. Say you’d like to discuss the offer with your family or mentors or pet before making a final decision.

Constantly sell yourself in a way that truly resonates with the company’s business objectives. This doesn’t mean saying: ‘I have X number of years in this field and I am Z-qualified or certified.’ That’s weak and self-focused. Make it instead about the company. As you negotiate, demonstrate your cutting insight into the gaps that this organization is facing and how you are a perfect fit. Doing so also show you are genuinely motivated by new challenges, a career path, bigger scope, the opportunity to work alongside bright people, and not just by the money and perks.

Challenge assumptions, ask questions nobody thought to ask, explore alternative ways to sweeten the deal. If base salary isn’t something the company is able to budge on, get creative about any of the following: stock options, a salary review upon confirmation, signing bonuses, special allowances for training, further education, commute, or relocation, more time-off, flexible work arrangements, anything really that matters more to you than it does to your employer.

So there you have it - make sure you negotiate well, or at least attempt to negotiate, during your next offer.

Thanks

As someone who hires across APAC for an American chemical company, the answer varies based on many things including:

1. How many other CVs or resumes can I call that day / how difficult or easy it is to recruit for that particular role
2. How strong of a candidate this person is

If I have quite a large pool to pick from, I normally wouldn't try more than twice to ring a potential candidate. Same goes if the candidate isn't exactly great. But if the role has very niche requirements, I tend to do everything I can to chase and hunt down the candidate.

But given how scarce good talent is, normally if it's a decent or could be decent candidate, I'd call twice, text the candidate, and drop an email asking for a better time to speak today or tomorrow.

Your best bet with your issue of not being able to answer calls might be to indicate in your resume itself the hours that you can be reached at (early morning? lunch? after-hours? though recruiters hate that) and that you'd prefer setting a time to speak via email first. If ringing in and you get to the company receptionist, just say that you're a candidate returning a call to HR / Recruitment. Ask either to be transferred immediately, or if not possible, get a name and direct line/phone extension/email so you can reach out directly.

Many reasons. One might want to migrate to Australia in the future. An Australian degree is automatically awarded extra points for migration. Some parents believe paying more (compared to about 35k for ACCA) will have a more complete educational experience. You get to do internships, have real semester breaks, access to research databases, learn to research,

GXFC everybody!!! I've been recruiting for the past 7 years in Malaysia and later on, the APAC region (both agency-side and in-house), and started a resume editing and interview coaching side hustle about a year ago for fun.

Every single day I see poorly written resumes/CVs, or sparse LinkedIn profiles that do little to highlight why a recruiter should even write to you, and realised - nobody really teaches any of us how to game the job application process, how to stand out from hundreds of applicants to a Jobstreet or LI ad, how to write high-impact resumes, or how to crush an interview, or why you should never take the first offer you're given (and how playing your cards right could result in a 50% improvement on your first offer that dramatically compounds over a lifetime).

Covid has also meant that we now get double or triple the number of applications for every role or vacancy available. Standing out has never been harder...

I've been compiling job application, resume / LI writing, interview, and salary negotiation tricks here for free so go check it out for tips and advice that might help! https://www.careersifu.com/

Aaaaand so here's a deal for you, if you've been covid-hit / jobless for the past couple of months, or a fresh grad entering the worst possible job market in the past decade, or just want to supercharge your resume / LinkedIn profile, or you've been applying to countless jobs and not hearing back from anyone, hit me up!

Send your LI url to me, or email over your resume, and I'll do a free 10-min diagnosis of 3 things you're doing wrong right now and how to make it better. Hope to hear from you at careersifus@gmail.com icon_idea.gif

Jobstreet.com positively played important role in assisting employers to select new recruitment that suitable and matched with employer's demand. Jobstreet.com also help employers efficiently and effortlessly to find desirable employee without using their businesses or companies resources excessively since Jobstreet.com use A.I Smarter Research system.

Some employers can use jobstreet.com website as one of the ways to study and doing research on current salary range on the job they have been offered to the applicants. This kind of info can help employers to update their available resources and at the same time they can do some changes based on the needs of the company

The following web site is very useful:
