Hi all,
I’m looking for WDTV replacement which died on me.
Current setup is HDMI to Tv 1080p (no need 4K)
And optical cable out to receiver for DTS 5.1 only (just pass through will do)
Attach hard disk via usb
Most files came from various codec but in Mkv file. play superb even raw 40gb without lag from picture and audio
Subtitle also works perfectly with sub or srt
Problem is western digital doesn’t came out WDTV anymore
What will be my alternative?
if the stated is all u need, your needs are basic.
u can walk into any shop and get a box rm200-300.
however, some cheap boxes suffer from:
.. inferior video quality compared even to your old WDTV.
.. may not read certain subs for newer files.
.. the worst ones may not do dd/dts.
WDTV and ACRyan were the kings of their days; even today, at 8 years old or so, they can still do what some new cheap boxes cannot.
technology has moved on such that most boxes focus on the video part in terms of resolution and the online streaming part.
just about all current boxes now can do 4k, hevc; u won't find "1080p only".
the better ones can do more - 10bit, HDR, dtshdma, dtsx, ddtruehd, dd atmos.
to be safe, better get one that will cover all yr current and immediate future needs.
the new files coming out now tend to be hevc; 10bit becoming more common.
as u primarily do playback and probably got used to a box native player, i suggest u consider the himedia q5pro.
this one will be good enough for u now and next few years even if u change to new 4k tv or start playing higher grade files or do online streaming.
just like WDTV, be sure u buy one with latest firmware (2.0.6) and be able to get future updates.
