Research In Motion isn’t just a leaky faucet ahead of BlackBerry World this year, it’s a waterfall. We scooped RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry lineup back in January and more recently, we gave you a hands-on look at the BlackBerry Bold Touch, BlackBerry Touch and BlackBerry Torch 2 smartphones, but the leaks continue. In recent days we’ve seen full specs, brief hands-on videos and more, and for the two or three remaining naysayers who still don’t believe RIM is about to announce its next-generation smartphone lineup at BlackBerry World next month, RIM’s promo videos are now starting to leak out. Companies typically don’t put these promotional spots together unless the have some devices to, you know, promote — so BlackBerry fans should sit tight for another couple of weeks and we’re certain they’ll have some sleek new smartphones to swoon over. Hit the break for RIM’s official BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry 9860 promo videos.

T-Mobile Launches the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Its First 4G BlackBerry Smartphone
Featuring the new BlackBerry 7 operating system, the smartphone will be T-Mobile’s fastest BlackBerry to date, leveraging a 1.2 GHz processor and America’s Largest 4G Network

2011-08-17 12:01:20
T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced the upcoming nationwide availability of the first 4G BlackBerry® smartphone to run on America’s Largest 4G Network™ — the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900. Available today in an exclusive pre-sale for T-Mobile business customers and launching nationwide on Aug. 31, the 4G-capable BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the thinnest BlackBerry smartphone ever (at only 10.5mm) and the first to offer the perfect union of a high-performance keyboard and brilliant touch display integrated within the iconic BlackBerry Bold design. Featuring a range of powerful hardware enhancements including a 1.2 GHz processor, Liquid Graphics™ technology 24-bit high-resolution graphics and advanced sensors, the new smartphone is designed to deliver the ultimate in communications, multimedia and productivity.

“T-Mobile is excited to add a BlackBerry smartphone to T-Mobile’s best 4G product lineup ever,” said Andrew Morrison, vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA. “With the new BlackBerry Bold 9900, we are offering our socially-active and business-minded customers a powerful device with a unique proposition — the pairing of a nationwide 4G network with the mobile communications efficiency that has become synonymous with BlackBerry smartphones.”

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is powered by the new BlackBerry 7 operating system, which introduces a next-generation BlackBerry browser with a significantly faster, more fluid Web browsing experience that is among the best in the industry. Additional enhancements to this next-generation BlackBerry browser have also optimized zooming and panning for smoother Web navigation and optimized HTML5 performance for incredible gaming and video experiences.

“We continue to deliver innovative products for our customers, and we’re excited to offer our first 4G BlackBerry smartphone,” said Femi Lakeru, vice president of business sales, T-Mobile USA. “Since T-Mobile offers 4G speeds in more places than any other wireless broadband network in the U.S., CIOs can trust that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 will give their employees the ultimate combination of speed, productivity and security.”

T-Mobile’s high-speed 4G network continues to expand and is now available in more than 190 markets, reaching more than 200 million people nationwide*. With the addition of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, T-Mobile now offers a wide variety of 4G devices including smartphones, tablets, laptop sticks, a netbook and a mobile hotspot. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone continues the tradition of delivering a leading mobile communications experience with a highly refined and integrated suite of phone, email, messaging and social apps to keep users connected and productive throughout the day. Recent enhancements include the newest release of BBM™ (BlackBerry® Messenger), and an updated Social Feeds (2.0) app. The new Facebook® for BlackBerry smartphones (2.0) app introduces features like Facebook chat and BBM integration that make it easier for users to connect with their Facebook friends in real time.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is also the first device to come preloaded with T-Mobile’s new MobileLife® Family Organizer application. Powered by Cozi, MobileLife Family Organizer makes managing families’ busy schedules easier with centralized calendars, shopping lists, to-do lists, and family journals that allow family members to share updates with each other on the go. will replace my 9700.

battery is a joke, but as someone said, hopefully it is a new gen of batt.
would hate to charge it as frequent as my sgs2.

2.8" is a bit small for touchscreen, but i wouldn't bother to use it anyway.

i don't think price will be rocket high, expecting less than 2.5k,
as sgs2 & sensation are less than 2.2k.
BB are losing its market, would be insane if they try to sell it at higher price.

hopefully will be here before Hari Raya (september), or i might have spend the money already sweat.gif

Yes you can. Just register a BIS Sim with your preferred Telco.

Of course the BB itself also not a Telco locked set, that is most important.

Hey there, thanks for replying so quickly!

So if I buy an AP set from a local dealer, I'll be able to enjoy full benefits of the BB even though the telco themselves have not released the phone themselves? The only difference is that I don't have any warranty if I buy the AP set, correct?

I'm planning to do a major bridge jumping though. From my old Nokia N97 symbian to a BB and from Digi to Maxis. So sorry if my questions seem irrelevant to the thread!

The build up of the phone and material used to produced is quite promising and it looks solid and have sleek-ish design. RM2188 is quite expensive. Wait for it to cool down first

Comparison against BB9780

Form Factor

Winner: Bold 9900
115 x 66 x 10.5 mm, 130g

Loser: Bold 9780
109 x 60 x 14.1mm, 122g

When it comes to mobile phones, size is an important consideration. No one wants a handset that's so big its looks like a prop from 1980s movie, but then you want a mobile that's so small that you struggle to use it. With its previous Bold models, BlackBerry has rarely strayed too far from is classic chassis design - wide, flat and not too heavy. The new model doesn't represent much of a departure from the well-known aesthetics (including the QWERTY keyboard and an optical trackpad) although it's a few mm slimmer than its predecessor, making it the thinnest BlackBerry yet. It's very slightly longer and wider than the previous model, making it a tiny bit heavier as well, but's that's to be expected as a result of the larger screen. At 130g, it's still not exactly heavy and the slimline profile is what really counts.

Display

Winner: Bold 9900
2.8-inch, 640x480, touchscreen

Loser: Bold 9780
2.44-inch, 480x360, LCD

BlackBerry handsets aren't really known for their large screens, but then if you're planning on watching lots of video on your phone they you're more likely to opt for something like the HTC Desire or iPhone 4 instead. The new Bold 9900 gets one over on its predecessor by offering a larger 2.8-inch screen compared to the older model's 2.44-inch display. While the older version offered an incredibly sharp resolution of 480x360 pixels, the 9900 sports a comparable resolution of 640x480 pixels. Along with its size and pixel count, the 9900 seriously ups the ante with the inclusion of a touchscreen, complete with multi-touch capability. It's not difficult to see which phone is the winner in this round.

Engine Room

Winner: Bold 9900
1.2GHz CPU, 768MB RAM

Loser: Bold 9780
624 MHz CPU, 515MB RAM

While most other flagship smartphones announced this year have featured dual-core processors to cope with the ever-growing demands of large screens, HD video playback and power-guzzling graphics, RIM is sticking to a relatively modest chipset for the Bold 9900. While upping the capabilities offered by the rather basic 624MHz CPU found in the Bold 9780, the Bold 9900 offers a 1.2GHz processor. It also boosts the 9780's RAM count of just 515MB to a far more capable 768MB. As the Bold is unlikely to be used for anything too graphics-heavy, the lack of a dual-core chip shouldn't be a problem.

Storage

Winner: Bold 9900
8GB onboard + microSD up to 40GB

Loser: Bold 9780
512MB onboard + microSD up to 32GB

Despite the fact that both devices sport a microSD slot meaning that you can expand the memory (up to 32GB on the 9780 and 40GB on the 9900), the new Bold 9900's 8GB of on-board memory gives it a distinct advantage over its 512MB memory-toting predecessor. However, the importance of this rests on what the new version of BlackBerry's OS (7) is capable of. OS 6.0 doesn't allow you to store apps onto memory card, so the inclusion of a larger onboard memory is of paramount importance. We've yet to hear whether this will be any different on the new 7.0 OS (we'll update you as soon as we know). We're guessing not, as there's such a large jump in on-board memory between the 9900 and the 9780, which could well be a measure to offer storage for an increasing pool of apps.

Imaging

Winner: Bold 9900
5MP, flash, 720p HD video

Loser: Bold 9780
5MP, flash, video

Some of the latest smartphones have really raised the bar when it comes to on-board cameras. RIM hasn't exactly gone overboard with the imaging capabilities on the 9900, which has the same 5MP camera as its predecessor, along with the familiar LED flash. However, where the new smartphone does set itself apart from the older 9780 is with its video capture skills. While the older model only offers standard video recording, the 9900 features 720p HD video capture. It may not be up to the full HD 1080p standards that some new smartphones have, but it's a marked improvement that should please most BlackBerry users.

Connectivity

Winner: Bold 9900
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, 3G (4G in US), NFC, BT 2.1

Loser: Bold 9780
3G, Wi-Fi b/g/n, 3G, BT 2.1

While RIM chose not to update the radio set up at all on the previous Bold model (despite most other manufacturers making the upgrade in 2010), it has finally introduced n-Wi-Fi to its Bold series, which should boost the 9900's Wi-Fi range in comparison to its predecessor. The new model also throws built-in NFC connectivity into the mix (a first for a BlackBerry), and the US will see a 4G model (while UK users will have to make do with 3G). Other than that, the 9900 features all the usual suspects such as GPS, micro USB and Bluetooth 2.1.

Battery life

Tie: Bold 9780
6hrs talk, 17 days stby
Tie: Bold 99006.3hrs talk, 12.8 days stby

Although this rather dull spec is often ignored, it's one of the most important considerations for a portable device - after all, no one wants their phone's juice to run out halfway through the day. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 offered exactly the same battery performance as its predecessor (the 9700) with six hours of talk time and 17 days on standby. The Bold 9900, offers a very slightly longer quoted talked time of 6.3 hours, albeit with a substantially reduced standby time of 12.8 days. We would've been surprised if it came with the same battery capabilities as the 9780 - after all, there's a bigger processor and a touchscreen interface to power now. We're calling this a tie as although the new model has the edge on talk time, the standby time is longer on the older model.

So how is this new bb ? This is the one i am interested after they launch the 9700. The only thing i am worried is the battery life. I just cant live with battery lower than 1500 mAH . Battery life on your side ok ? i heard mixed review about this, some complaints and some said it was on par with 9700.

i'm not sure of 9700 but if compare with 9780,
the battery capacity is lower but the processor speed is faster, higher resolution.
bb os 7 is a facelifted os 6 so battery optimization may just be incremental.

comparing similar usage patterns all these factors combine to clearly tell u that 9900 is going to die out faster.
battery life on android is much worst.

but again, you may not want to worry abt this too much. there are workarounds.

1) get extra battery or portable charger.
2) charge whenever u can, while driving/sitting in a bus/classroom/old town etc.
3) use Edge not 3G. device takes a lot of power to connect/stay connected to 3G. in malaysia, 3G coverage is spotty at best.

The offer is not so attractive sweat.gif

RM1699-RM1799 is reasonable for SINGLE CORE Smartphone with 5MP Camera...

Further this round Telco price are really too much. I have doubt there will be much user signing up for it... Unless it is a company user who sign up in bulk...

Hey sony , your 9700 already sold is it ? How come your BBM face different already ?

BTW this phone has one of my very concerning issue that is battery life, heard very mixed review from crackberry and web , some say it can last 2 - 3 days for moderate use and 1 full day with heavy usage. hmm.gif Aint good , this is the main problem for me sad.gif

LOL , +1 , thats what i think too. The web review are simply too biased towards RIM. I prefer some end users review like fellow forummers real life usage.
My 9700 can last me for 2 days with moderate usage like

1. BBM for 3 hours ( on and off )
2. Light web browsing ( no video ) 2 hours
3. Twitter refresh every 2 hours
4. Facebook refresh every 2 hours
5. MSN for 3 hours ( on and off )
6. 3 emails accounts for BIS
7. 3 BBM Groups , active for around 3 hours ( on and off )
8. 50 to 80 SMS
9. Call for 2 hours ( on and off )
10. Less than 20 photo taken.
11. Bluetooth WiFi and 3G are always off.

Above is my daily usage and 9700 can last me for around 2 days ( based on OS 5 , i downgraded from OS 6 because i feel its really buggy + draining the battery a lot compared to OS5 )

So judging from my usage pattern , anyone here with 9900 can see if i can last for one full day ( from 9AM to 1AM ( 16 Hours )) ?

based on your usage pattern i don't think your 9900 will last 16hours unless you turned-off the 3G radio.

anyway here's how i used my 9900 yesterday and the battery lasted from 8am (100%) 'till 11PM (5%). (3G ON, WIFI ON Intermittently)

Definitely to get one, just unsure whether to use Celcom package or standalone.

Some branches away from KL do not have stock as at today, but some Celcom dealers already having them.

must use package otherwise who is going to give u BIS?
maybe Digi (coverage only in urban areas), or Maxis (spotty coverage, expensive charges).
Celcom is balanced with widest coverage.

2) I m maxis user this I do not know

3) upfront mean = phone 1300+300upfront payment and this upfront payment will deduct 30 each month for 10month

Pls correct me if I m wrong ya:)

Wow bro thx for the fast reply, I edited the post just before you replied i think.
I called up Celcom and found the answers so I erased the questions but apparently you are fast and furious~

Nearest Celcom Branch to me is Seremban (2 hours...) and there is no BB yet, but the Celcom Dealer at the same row got 7 units. Too late for me to go and will try again next Monday, hope no traffic jam.

Still undecided whether 9900 or 9810. My thumb is big and i need bigger keyboard like 9900, but the camera and screen size of 9810 is better...

For earlier 9800 users, does the trackpad located not at same level as keyboard make navigating an inconvenient task?

Ini Wilayah Celcom!
This is location dependent. At my place (home and workplace), Maxis full bars and Celcom coverage is very poor because Celcom refused to install disc at the tower in front of my house, only 1 Maxis disc at the moment. GPRS only anyway.
At the nearest town from my place, Celcom conquer with 3.5G and Maxis still GPRS. I go out to town only like 2-3 times a week. And yes I stay in jungle.

Digi? a sorry service at remote area.

Quick and Ezy

How to install leaked OS

1. Backup

2. Download BBSAK

Link here

3. Make sure that your BlackBerry shows it is connected to BBSAK. If it does not show it is connected, that probably means that DM is still running is background and is preventing you from connecting to it, or vice-versa.

Package is fully available.
Celcom care line sucks. Especially now raya mood.
So forget calling them.
Go to celcom center directly. If they act dumb and try to be lazy, show them the website or even this page.
If they are still stubborn, demand to see the branch manager.

Torch 9810 can also do HD video recording. The main differences that I could see is the auto focus on 9810 which 9900 does not have and NFC in 9900 that 9810 does not have.

Spec in GSMarena can be wrong sometimes. I am the one who corrected their mistake when they said Bold 9900 has auto-focus. smile.gif

If there is anything wrong or doesn't seem right with your bb then the best bet is to do a warranty claim.

Or test kaw-kaw at the dealer and demand a replacement if you don't like the unit because of defects.

Haiz, called Celcom careline and they told me Celcom Seremban not carrying stock, but the Celcom Authorized Dealer next door got it. So i drive 2 hours there, and found the dealer having 1x 9900 and 1x 9810. however they said the units they have are for standalone sale and not Celcome package @#%&$xx... Brightstar one.

What to do, already there, drive another 2 hours empty hand meh... so just play with 9900 and 9810 for 30min, donno which one to choose, a while told the shop i decided on 9810; then wait wait 9900 is better, then 9810 again zzz... the sale person also pening with me. Last last chosen 9900.

After buying next step is go back to Celcom center to register what internet plan for BB. Now the unit is charging, wait till midnight only play.

I prefer 9810 actually, if not because i have fat thumb it will be my only choice. This is my first BB phone.

Here's something that i don't understand about blackberry battery, let say my battery is down to approximately 49% then I restart the phone (for fun).

After the phone is back-up its battery will increase about 5%.

Just got my first BB device, the 9900.
Not used to the interface yet.

Wish to know how to show the phone number together with name in the contact list? What i I can see is names only and this is very inconvenience without number shown at the same time. How to make it show both?

Thanks.

Emailed Maxis customer care twice. 1 time, the usual reply template, "we'll keep you posted", the 2nd time Maxis customer care called and said, "we'll keep you posted... Sorry sir, we do not have an ETA yet, when to unit will be available." Hahaha... Go figure.

Maxis set is special made by RIM isn't it (Maxis Boot Logo when start the BB)? Maybe that make Maxis set late to set up plan because their device not ready yet (still in Kilang).. hehehe..

Wah bro, good lar you, if i want to write also donno whom to write to, donno who in charge of what department. Send to wrong person just ends up in dustbin.

Still learning the phone. I'm from Windows Mobile 6, still feel BB difficult to navigate. The trackpad is not as good as Dpad of WM6 especially at accurate cursor by cursor movement. Typing 1 hand without looking at screen also not as good as numpad of WM6 (ehem, sms while driving is an offence...). Unable to sketch something using stylus. Other than that is ok, speed is fast. Screen resolution VGA is the same as my 4 years old WM6 only difference is potrait and landscape.

The company i work has BES (lotus), but i donno how to setup. It seems like need activation number to key into the phone? Too bad i am low rank employee the company won't setup for me sad.gif

9900 seems to have better screen compared to 9810, side by side compare at default setting, 9900 display quality is obviously clearer and lively. Because of glass vs plastic?

Battery life is bad compared to 9780 or even 9700. Quite a disappointment. To add more, the camera's rubbish. But I don't use the camera that much anyway.

Anyone know where can I get extended battery for 9900? Maybe ximax brand? 1800mAH should be good!

No higher capacity battery for this phone yet. However, you can use mobile charger e.g. Eneloop or Yoobao where you can use to charge your phone no matter where you are.

Don't think the battery can last me more than 10-13 hours on 3G. Not a big showstopper for me, I will use 3G only in the office as I can charge off USB and stick to 2G when I am out. Digi's 2G network coverage is way better than their 3G anyway ha ha.

8:46am = 100%
3:45pm = 41%

Approx. 60% drained in 8 hours, or about 8% per hour.

Got a shop to stick a Nokia N95 8GB's screen protector (RM15) to just protect the display area. I feel safer this way since I carry my baby naked in my pants pocket.

Yes, they are flushed with the screen's glass as far as I can see. Only the touchpad thingy protrudes from the button bezel.

in crackberry, some have perfectly flushed screens, some have slighly sunken button panels like us.

i will try to go brightstar center to check if can get replacement.
in crackberry, some have perfectly flushed screens, some have slighly sunken button panels like us.
*
Ok. It doesn't really bother me much, I kinda like the slight bump. Its funny though, on my phone, the left and right corners of the button assembly (above call and hangup buttons) feel like they're lower than the screen glass while the centre button plastic edges (menu and back buttons) feel like they're slightly higher than the screen glass. Should I be worried about this? Have to ask because my previous BB was a Curve 8900 which was all plastic and always 'creaky'..

Nop, it doesn't look normal. Probably you can try uninstalling whatsapp, do a "battery pull" and reinstall the app again.

If you are only having such problem when accessing whatsapp, it is very likely to be an application bug.

Is your phone warrantied by Brightstar? If yes, then you need to go there.

apparently it does not happen to whatsapp only, even when i reply text messages...... same thing happens...... it does not happen everytime, but still, it does annoy me esp when i cant reply when i wanted to, i have gotta wait for like 30 secs or else the screen goes blackout, and when i press any key, even the button that lock/unlock, the whole phone is not responding, only the LED indicator still blinking......

i bought it via Digi........ =( cry.gif

Although you bought it from DiGi, it can be under warranty from Brightstar as they are the official distributor in Malaysia. However, there are cases where DiGi got their BlackBerry phones from local supplier e.g. PDAExpert.

You need to check from your warranty card (or sticker on the phone, near battery) on who is the warranty provider and get there. You can also go to DiGi (not retail shops but DiGi centres) and pass it to them but it will take longer to get your phone fixed because they are just a middle men.

You need to visit the nearest BlackBerry service centre. I think the address is also stated on the warranty card.

I got free screen protector when I was buying the phone. I bought from Mines 2, Seri Kembangan. Maybe you guys can go there and take a look. The shop is somewhere in the middle with big Blackberry logo on the front counter.

Added on September 1, 2011, 11:33 pmBTW I noticed overseas set (e.g. US) has 3G and H+, but our local Brightstar set only has 3G? WTF?

I am supposed to get the free screen protector too, but i forgot at the end when walked out, calat...
2 hours distance, don't think will go back.
Will try to get soft silicone cover. hard cover is too fat i think.

Har, the 3G logo does not "include" the meaning of 3.5G? wtf , will go test it out.

9900 should have some sort of design for the finger to pull the phone out easily from the holster. I hate when i need to pull it out, donno where to hold, if hold by the side there are volume keys.
Search function sucks, it can't figure out 2 words with space, if type "aabb" it will not show result of "a abb" or "aa bb" or "aab b" , pretty sad about it.

Screen is much better than 9810 IMO. compared side by side 9900 is crystal clear with same brightness. Can read the screen under sun light.
Trackpad is too close to T and Y keys, always kena, that 2 keys will worn out faster than others yawn.gif

I would suggest you to use your current telco if you are happy with it. DiGi is a little risky where at some places, you almost can't access the internet even on EDGE mode. Their network has got a little bad recently but luckily, my area is still OK on EDGE (3G is gone case).

If you are looking for a cheaper option, then DiGi might fit into your plan.

Guys and gals, I have a tip I found on crackberry forum to share. It seems that the whatsapp from App World (2.6.5918) is outdated and may be contributing to heavier than normal battery drain on the 9900.

As advised at http://goo.gl/nxB6P, I went directly to the whatsapp OTA site to update my whatsapp client and the battery's been quite ok today for me. App usage shows about 1 hour of active usage on the phone today - I am on 2G+wifi and my phone was 100% at 8am, and is now at 78% after almost 8 hours.

That was when I had the old whatsapp program from the app world. My batt died within 12 hours on 3g with no wifi. Today on 2g with wifi and the latest whatsapp from whatsapp.com, its now 68% battery left after 11 hours.

Tomorrow I will test 3g without wifi again and update u guys. Btw my usage is moderate, 1.5 hours of 'active' time today.

in addition, 3g coverage is lousy in malaysia, even klg valley area.
if u turn on 3g, the smartphone will use a lot of battery juice to try and stay on 3g especially when signal is week.

king of network coverage and reasonable price - celcom
king of brand image and hefty price - maxis
king of economy - digi

unless u r unhappy with ur current telco, suggest u stick with it.
if u wanna test digi network, can test drive using prepaid pack.

fastest speed among the big 3 is maxis. but ever since they discontinue unlimited data plan, it can be very expensive if u do not monitor ur usage carefully.

unless u spend most of ur time in urban areas and absolutely demand fastest speed all the time, then maxis is for u.

If I'm not mistaken, this is due to us not having H+(4G=14.4Mbps) networks in Malaysia
Malaysia has only 3G(7.2Mbps) networks

I came to realise the presence of another Bold 9900 thread (https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1836164)

Would everyone prefer to have one thread for 9900 or possibly one for every telco like Celcom 9900, DiGi 9900, Maxis 9900, U Mobile 9900, Tunetalk 9900?

One thread for 9900 will be the best. We can then discuss there about different telcos.

One general thread would be awesome. I notice there are three similar threads, maybe you can merge them into one.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1836164 (Official BlackBerry OS 7 - Bold Touch 9900 )
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1985481 (NEW BLACKBERRYS LAUNCHED)
and this current celcom 9900 thread.

yeah let's merge, become happy family. thumbup.gif

3G+wifi does not fulfill my requirements, sadly. 10 hours standby results in only 20% of batt left (total 2 hours of active usage).

Oh well, back to the more reliable, stable and power stingy 2G+wifi tomorrow icon_rolleyes.gif

Added on September 3, 2011, 7:53 pmBy the way, my friends, has anyone managed to download Dropbox for Blackberry 7 from the Dropbox site? I am getting error 404 (i.e. page not available) in my BB browser.

Need Dropbox to sync my Keepass DB file from cloud to phone so that I can access it with the Keepass app on my BB (this must-have 'e-wallet' app is multiplatform and FOC, available on Windows, Linux, Android and BB).

Ha ha, of course my usage is not exactly the same every day plus I didn't actually drain my batt to zero. Today I was outside more so maybe having wifi enabled sucked more power due to wlan scanning..

Digi 3g signal is crappy at my place in Tg Bunga, true sad.gif

Added on September 3, 2011, 8:59 pmBy the way, read some crackberry forum postings on disabling compression on the microsd to reduce cpu utilization, let's see if things improve.

3g is nice for web browsing, but I am finding 2g more stable tongue.gif

Haih... I personally do not like to disable 3G. That's the reason I buy a phone with 3G capability.

Hope RIM is working on a permanent solution.

Same here. I rather charge more often than to be on EDGE only.

But my 9900's battery life is real bad, even worse than my Torch 9800 whom I thought was bad.

Unplug at 830am and by 5pm I'm down to about 20%.

Of course, my phone calls are quite heavy during that duration.

I don't see how RIM can make the 1230mah battery do miracles. I wouldn't mind a thicker custom / 3rd party battery, 1500-2000mah would be nice. For now, I am considering a spare ori batt or to be on 2g all the time.

Update us potential buyers about it then. If the battery life really can't make it through a day then I think I'll resort to the 9810 or the 9780. Everything with the 9900 seems to be perfect except for the battery life!

3G is definitely a battery sucker, even for any other BB phones. I've tried on Curve 3G and it only lasts for half day with 3G mode (WiFi off). Even on Bold 9700 and 9000, it only lasts for 1.5 days with 3G mode.

Using DiGi and 3G network is terrible at my home and workplace.

Not recommended to use 3G unless you really need e.g. when surfing web etc.

don't know bout you guys, but i'm getting alot of hour glass loading on my 9900. i migrated my data and apps from 9780 to 9900, is that the reason why?

happens alot when i pull my berry out from my holster. i'll have to wait for at least 30 secs for the hour glass to finish loading.

Don't transfer data n apps from 9780 to 9900. Use protect for backup n restore. Install new n fresh apps from appworld...

*
after i re-install whatsapp from OTA and did a battery pull, i dont have the same problem until the next day...... rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

do i really have to bring it back to Brightstar?

Will they change 1 to 1 on the spot i wonder?

Any idea?

So, aren't you having any problem until now?

It depends. If they can see the problem and it looks more like a hardware related problem, they MAY change with a new one. Sometimes depends on luck too.

No lag that I can notice, not sure what the article writer is referring to. On 2g battery is more than enough for me to last a whole day without recharging (3g is ok for 10 plus hours only). The 9900 is the fastest phone I have ever used, seriously. Not even my Galaxy Tab (7) or Galaxy S running Cyanogenmod7 is as quick, and the keyboard shortcuts of the 9900 are very useful and handy.

Didn't experience any lags so far. it's speedy and behaves fine as a phone.
like i always say, battery life doesn't bother me too much as long as it can last 8 - 10 hours.
there are ways to overcome it like spare batteries, additional chargers etc.

it uses microUSB charge so the chargers are quite cheap.

I haven't get hold of 9900 yet. Still contemplating either to wait for the Maxis plan or port to Celcom. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

Will do later when I get back.

No lags in my 9900. Very speedy device indeed!

Maybe a firmware update will improve the batt life.

On a side note, disabling NFC does improve the batt life a little bit.

Although I'm still somewhat conservative with merging. Too many threads merged into one will cause confusion when someone reads the pages from the start. laugh.gif

trackpad is fine for me. just becareful when you want to use their pouch, it will actually do more harm then protect. my trackpad and keys was scracted by the puch on my 9700. so im not going to use their pouch anymore.

Brightstar set comes with original pouch...

Some AP Set will include as well.. Better ask properly before buying. Some dealer will keep it and sell it later...

Curiously, I am trying to convince myself to switch from an iPhone to a Blackberry especially the 9900 drool.gif, anyway assuming I am planning to turn on 2G to conserve battery, I was told about an issue where I am unable to retrieve messages or calls when 2G is active. Does it mean if I turn on 2G 24/7 as a result I am unable to receive calls? I am kinda new into this I hope someone can enlighten me.

PS: I am sorry if I post something irrelevant.

Actually with EDGE, your device is unable to provide both data and voice calls simultaneously. So if you have a voice call come through, your data connection will be dropped and not the other way. Voice calls takes precedence.

Actually with EDGE, your device is unable to provide both data and voice calls simultaneously. So if you have a voice call come through, your data connection will be dropped and not the other way. Voice calls takes precedence.
*
however, when tested on an iphone, while downloading on EDGE, and a call comes in, it won't come in but shows as missed call.

i tseted it on the torch 9800 and the call would miss too. But i remember testing it on 9780 and the call went through...can anyone with bold 9900 test this to see if the call can go thorugh?

i guess so. 9700 could last me full 12hrs with 3G, but my 9900 would be dried in 7hrs (assuming the same usage).

luckily berry's data are all compressed and requires less bandwidth. so, EDGE will be sufficient for non-browsing activities.

but still, not using 3G is like limiting the usage experience. sigh....

Well, some sacrifices have to be made, I think. It's like how I disable automatic data/feed polling in Android's facebook and twitter clients to save power. Sure, the user experience is affected since I don't have new data at my fingertips, i.e. have to manually refresh to see new info, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Can't do that, having facebook, twitter and foursquare always active with full push notifications was one of the main reasons for my moving back to bb+bis smile.gif

Anyway, with backlight on lowest setting (10), media card compression disabled, backlight timeout set to 10secs and on 2g, my 9900 experience and battery life are satisfying enough for now smile.gif smile.gif

Just worried about the intermittent cursor drift, may bring my phone back to Brightstar for advice.

Got my BB9900 from DiGi Times Square, the sales guy did not help me chop, fill up and send my BrightStar warranty card to well, BrightStar. So now i have to personally send it a a BrightStar branch?

Pls ignore my Enquiry, just called up BrightStar, they said is okay as long as i have both the warranty card (empty) and my DiGi bill/receipt of purchase.

process of sending back warranty card is so redundant. this process is over 30 years old!

IT companies like brightstar, samsung shld lead the way to reduce paper usage.
usually i will not send it, just retain it to ensure resale value in the future.

Gonna wipe and reset my 9900 now, the touchpad was fine all day until suddenly making the cursor drift upwards just now while I wasn't even touching the pad, keyboard or screen. sad.gif

BTW, just to share my latest experience, the battery is still good, 3 hours plus of active usage on 2g+wifi and I still have 40% of juice left after 14 hours.

Regard the brightstar warranty card,u can just ignore it.

when turn to warranty issue, they wont see ur warranty card, the most important is receipt which is proof of purchase.

sent few sets to brightstar before and they never ask the warranty card and receipt.

Explanation of bb9900 camera

sauce

QUOTE
I've read some concern about how the removal of the autofocus feature on the new devices is somehow a downgrade in the camera. I made the analogy that people don't and shouldn't only by phones for the camera eluding to the fact pocket cameras don't have telephone call capabilities.

The confusion lies with peoples' misunderstanding of cameras and the focussing systems used by cameras. Just because RIM removed the autofocus feature doesn't mean you aren't getting any autofocus in your images.

We are all familiar with the 9780 or 9700 camera right? (I hope so). You've all encountered the pressing of the trackpad, the camera stalls as it is focussing and then snaps the picture. That delay is what is commonly referred to as shutter lag.

It is unwise to suggest that the 9900 has an inferior camera because that feature is gone. Quite contrary in my view. Autofocus has not been lost. The camera is still focussing but in continuous mode.

For the most part people don't yet realize the difference between autofocus and continuous focus. This leads to the confusion.

Given that my hobby next to guitar is photography I will try to help in this regard.

How may times in autofocus have you tried to snap a photo only for the subject to move as you were about to snap the picture?...the end result is an unusable image.

Autofocus is the most widely supported camera focus mode, In essence it is one-shot focusing, which is best for still subjects. The autofocus mode as I just provided an example for is susceptible to focus errors for fast moving subjects or subjects that move before the shutter is fully pressed. Autofocus cannot anticipate subject motion. Auto focus is great when you have a perfectly still subject. The focusing requires a focus lock before the photograph can be taken. This is what people on their 9870 or os 6 devices notice when taking pictures. That slight freeze ....then "click" when the image is taken.

Check your 9780 ... in camera options go to "Autofocus" tou will see there is continuous listed first then "single shot".

The single shot is what has been removed.

I'll bet you a dollar that most people didn't even realize they have been shooting continuous focus all this time with their 9780 but are now making an issue out of a feature that they never used not being available...ie the "single shot" focus. Continuous focus was always an option on the 9780 .

Most people though barely used it and I'll bet never knew it was there.

Most people don't even use the scene modes by the way ... believe me ... they help ... I can't tell you the number of times I've been a rock concerts and see people snapping images of the stage with a flash when they are 60 feet away from the stage! That's what night or party scene modes are for. Flash at that distance is going to illuminate the head of the guy standing in front of you...not the image. Get to know your scene modes for better images and don't blame the camera. I am veering off topic so my apologies.

Bank on point.....

Continuous focus, supports an autofocus mode which continually adjusts the focus distance for moving subjects.

Nikon cameras refer to this mode as continuous focus which is what we see in the new Bold 9900. (Not Nikon’s focussing system though but they just called it the same). Those with Canon cameras notice this referred to as AI Servo focusing.

Continuous focussing works by predicting where the subject will be slightly in the future based on an estimation of the subject velocity using focus distance and movement. The camera then focuses at this predicted distance in advance to account for the shutter lag (which is the delay between pressing the shutter button and the start of the exposure as we see in autofocus shots in the 9780). This greatly increases the probability of correct focus for moving subjects.

There is no "downgrade" going on with regards to no autofocus in the 9900 device. The camera in the bold 9900 is still auto-focussing but doing so on in a continuous mode...continually tracking the subject.

How many times have you tried taking a picture of someone blowing out a birthday candle with your 9780 only to get it blurry because the camera was trying to lock focus? During that lag, your subject blew out the candles and you missed the shot!

Now do that in continuous focus and chances are you have a clear shot. Now, drop the preview picture setting down to as low as possible (I believe you can turn it right off on the 9900) and then you can snap away even quicker!

I shoot photography as an advanced hobby. I can tell you that even when shooting still subjects I utilize continuous focus (this is a $2,000 camera body) just in case I get some movement.

So to answer your question...you are not getting an inferior camera. With all due respect, people just need to know how to use the camera. As the old saying goes, the cost of the gear doesn't make you a better photographer...it is what you do with the equipment you have that does.

By the way, my $2,000 camera still doesn't make telephone calls or accept incoming email or BBM messages.

The excuse has been used many times before yes ... that other devices offer better cameras. Oh well ... the buyer needs to realize what he/she is buying the device for. Will they be buying it for the RIM reliability, security and fastest push services in the industry or are they buying it for entertainment purposes?

I hope this clears the air.

I have taken great shots with my 9900 .. clear and crisp ... arguably better than the 9780 on which I too used continuous focus extensively.

Learn when to use the proper scene modes and don't sweat the absence of "autofocus" or single shot focus as was known on the 9780. The camera is still focussing!! It is just focussing differently.

Anyhow, I really don't think camera's should matter that much when it comes to BB's or phones for that matter lol.

Looks like this early batch of 9900 from BrightStar is not HSPA enabled which is in contrary to what is advertised.  Will brightstar entertain this if complain?

so u mean there is 2 variant/version for 9900? i dont think so, 9900 must support hsdpa network.

It seems that within the same 9900 there are some that support HSPDA and some only 3G. If go to crackberry.com can read some people having that problem. Real reason not known yet, some saying thoese getting early units are not released unit; some said it is firmware issue that the 9900 is actually getting H+ speed but show the logo as 3G. Donno which is which.

FYI guys, H+ is not HSDPA but actually HSPA+
HSDPA is actually 3.5G or 3G+
and if I'm not mistaken is not available in Malaysia.
We don't hav a HSPA+ network in Malaysia, just 3G currently

Added on September 9, 2011, 11:19 amUpdate: Only U Mobile has H+ capabilities, but in very limited areas.. So d only way u can get a H+ symbol is if u use U Mobile and go to Berjaya times Square... wink.gif

Just read about this, seems like actually all 9900 has h+ support.

Just maybe unbranded 9900 there is few versions, each version may contain diff modem/band. This is the cause maybe.

There is 1 user at crackberry using 9900,he get extreme speed while his 9900 only showing 3G.

Yes, many people tiao about this, but nothing will be changed. acceppt it or wait for next model.

I am not particular about the camera, still can live with it.

What i am not happy is some of the interfaces and controls are not convenient.
Example like after typing number in universal search, there is no option to "Add in contact". Really stupid.
In Text Message tab, click on menu key the first default selection is "open". "Compose new message" is at the bottom which cannot be seen at the first page, really stupid.
In Contacts tab, phone number is not shown, only name zzz...
Cannot type "space" in password column, zzz...
Menu key spacing is too big, this is meant for finger touch, but i think most people use trackpad instead of finger to scroll the menu list. Unable to make the spacing smaller so that more options can be displayed.
Trackpad almost non functional if the finger is wet even a little

After all, i still like the phone.

OK guys, my 9900 has gone to the hospital (i.e Brightstar Penang).

cry.gif cry.gif

Went there today at 4pm to let them take a look at my trackpad that seemed to make the cursor move on the screen even when not touched.

2 hours later, they pass me the phone to test after supposedly resetting and recalibrating something, and tadaa! the phone doesn't finish booting (hangs at the BB logo). Now they have taken back my whole box (minus warranty card) and advised me that they will send the whole thing to KL and will call me back within 2 weeks or so.

1st time using a blackberry? Lemme teach u something... The problems you stated are not actually problems, just that you don't know some of the functions.

(refer to numbers in the quote)
1. Normally we (more advanced users) disabled universal search in homescreen because we use keyboard shortcuts for apps. For example, N = bbm, B=launch browser, etc. So when we wanna call we press the green button to launch "Phone" and type there... In the "Phone" app you can add to contacts. If you really insist to add in universal search then I've no solution, but that's really minor that I never actually realize...

2. No need to click menu key, just press C in text message there, you can compose already. Make use of keyboard shortcuts.
(I suggest you guys to buy QuickLaunch app, most useful app among all apps ever, for example my sms compose shortcut is just space + Y)

3. This can't be changed at the moment... Need an extra click to see details.

4. I can type space in my password (Bold 9780). Don't see why you cant.

5. Personal preference, can't be helped.

6. Mine is just fine.

^ Sometimes BB's QC is bad especially trackpad. Two friends of mine bought curve 3G, both brightstar set from umobile.

First set, the trackpad is too loose, it moves even though you're not touching it. Second set, the trackpad is not sensitive enough, need to scroll like mad but the cursor only move a little..

Having said that my bold 9780 is perfectly fine... So it really depends on your luck.

I guess because the QC was based on randomly selecting which unit to test. But then again, I could be wrong. blush.gif

My wife's 9780 keypad is ultra sensitive. Every time she types, each letter will be repeated at least twice. Sent to Brightstar, for servicing, still the same. But hey, now she managed to adjust to just slightly touch the keys to type. She called it slide typing. whistling.gif whistling.gif

Not sure about QC's true meaning but just let it go tongue.gif

That is the very famous stutter issue, you can see it in crackberry forum. I heard the latest 6.0.0.650 OS already fixed this stutter issue... But I'm not sure cuz I don't have this issue from the beginning.

yeah, 1st time use BB, so some "convenient" ways from previous phone not found in BB make me a bit frustrated, need some times to adjust.

1. ohh, disable universal search ah, never think of that. about adding new contact in universal search, some models reported to be able to do that, but majority cannot.

2. Will try that.

3. Aiyak...

4. You sure the space is not converted into . at password column? that happen in 9900. No big deal anyway, i change the password oledi.

5. Aiyak...

6. When the finger is half dry, it is not even able to "scroll" on the trackpad because of resistance, same thing like people wet the finger in order to flip to next page on a book. I use joystick in previous phone which is much more easy to use compared to trackpad and good at gaming too.

Other thing is capacitive touch screen is no way comparable to resistive touch screen in term of accuracy and speed. Using stylus to aim at thing is much faster and accurate, but taking out and sliding back stylus itself is annoying enough and cannot be done 1 handed. stylus for capacitive screen is much inferior compared to resistive type, not sensitive and need force to press down, so not possible to do like 5 actions in 1 second. Capacitive screen cannot sketch drawing...
Having said that, the trend is capacitive screen now. The display is superior compare to resistive screen, no worry of accidental click inside pocket which i hate a lot, more durable, screen won't become having marks here and there because of stylus.

My big thumb covers 1/3 of the screen, lucky BB has trackpad and keyboard hehe

in any electrical equipment, if u charge with higher current is always better than lower.
bcos it will take long time for lower current to charge, more heat generate and more stress on battery bcos it needs to draw harder.

*
Hmm I prefer trackpad over joystick because joystick need more force and not fast enough to scroll a long page... And joystick is more prone to malfunction. I think your trackpad might be faulty or maybe I seldom scroll with half dry finger so I don't know smile.gif

yeah joy stick weak at scrolling long page. it is good at gaming and controlling.
half dry finger happens after washing hand only, normal time is dry one.

A-GPS is a feature for the satellite to detect your location faster. For this, your phone will access the internet.

As for the written direction thing, you will find an option to view on map.

Voice navigation? Google maps for BB and BlackBerry maps definitely don't have this feature. You may want to search for 3rd party GPS softwares. I couldn't recommend one because I can't think of any for BB.

My gf bought a brightstar set last saturday. Brought it to her ofc to charge for 3hours but the battery level stayed the same. I remembered tat she said that the new charger is a bit slow to charge compared to the old bulkier ones. We both didnt know abt it then. But after installing apps n what not, she had to reboot her fone. After tat only can see the actual battery level.

After she got back tat night, she charged overnight. And after she woke up, still at the same level(25%) the night before. She rebooted(+take out the batt) the fon, n walla. It was 95%. Later tat evening, went back to the store and trying othr batt, still the same. After security wipe also the same. Nw in the process of RMA'ing it. Takes abt a week or two the shop said. Pity her.

Anybody got the same problems with their sets?

Aiya, must register to that forum. The challenge question is something I don't know the answer to..

'Lembaga (singkatan) yang memiliki kedudukan setingkat Presiden di Indonesia'

Update - Found the answer, registered an account. The hybrid seems to be a stripped down version of the latest leak for the 9900. Not sure what it fixes yet since I can't download it now, but I may try once I get my BB back from Brightstar.

Indonesia haven't launch, wanna ask my family to help me get in Malaysia then my gf bring it to me next week. Where's the best place to purchase it?

ip4 is the best smartphone on the planet. so cannot compare especially on battery life and camera.
but bb9900 does have a physical keyboard which is one of the best so far.
guess most of ur indon frens are using BBM hence ur need for a blackberry.

u can choose to keep ur ip4 as ur main phone and buy a curve 8520 as ur primary BBM device.

best place to purchase is authorized distributors.

Indonesia majority all bbm, but starting to see more iPhone here and also Lots of iPad.

I definitely still keeping my iPhone. 8520 or curve 3g battery can last longer than bold 9900 huh? My major weakness, I love new tech haha.

Definitely. With smaller screen, slower processor. Better get 8520, which is using 2g/edge.
Not sure of 3G coverage in Indonesia but if it is as bad as here, then a lot of battery power will be spend to hunt for 3G signal and keeping the connection on.

do not be childish and resort to infantile flaming war like those droidfags.
in general, ppl who use blackberry is more mature, knows what they want best and choose functionality over candy.

but in terms of customer satisfaction, sales, and overall image iPhone is by far the best on the planet.
Android, and RIM is far behind.

while iPhone may be the best but it is NOT PERFECT.
like what i've written, if u like physical keyboard, choose BB instead of iPhone.
