Hi guys ... hope someone can help me with my situation here ... I currently travel alot for work .. around the world and I use quite alot of credit card ... anyway so far I only have 1 credit card ...

On my last trip, my credit card failed and luckily I had enough cash ... which got me worried and I think i definately need more than 1 credit card ... I currently having a VISA card ..

My question to you guys is .. should my 2nd card be a MASTERCARD ? Or should I stick to VISA ? I have a mixed feeling coz I thought it might be good to have both ... but most of the time I only see VISA .. so I'm worried if suddenly my VISA fails and then my MASTERCARD is not accepted ...

Should I get MASTERCARD or VISA as my 2nd card ? My 1st card is VISA.

Did you find out the root cause of the failure to use Visa ?

The rule of thumb is get 1 Visa & 1 MasterCard from different bank.

Peisqo mentioned that he travels around the world and use cc very frequently. I believe there must be places he has been to accepting amex.

The reason for asking Peisqo to take M2 cards is '1 GST for 2 cards'. He may also consider SCB Platinum if he would like to enjoy facilities at KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge.

back to year 2008 when was in s'pore at a hotel. my Master gold DA failed. luckily had MBB Visa as back up.
so since then, i always get master & visa. best to have each from different bank.
now additional MBB2 Amex.

I never bothered to compare between Visa and Master coz its quite the same to me..And also i seldom use/buy stuffs at those places that has this offer lol....

Anyway i dont think its a must or important to have 1 Visa and 1 Master or vice versa as backup..
There are no such thing as "Visa failed" or "Master not accepted" becoz nowadays 99.5% machines accepts both cards.
The only thing that can happen is your card or account got problem.

Just to add to what has already been mentioned, your credit card failed while using it overseas can be attributed to a variety of reasons. Hopefully you have already eliminated account related problems. One probable problem is that the merchant and/or gateway problem - a quick check to this can be done should you call the bank immediately (Note : Expensive roaming/international charges if you call from your mobile) after the problem occurs.

Ask the CS whether there was any transactions went through the system .... if no then your transaction never went past the merchant's gateway. This problem has occurred to me several times and affecting all the cards I am holding for that particular bank.
Note : Gateway problems will affect the bank itself and not a particular card.

As mentioned, it is best to have 2 different cards from 2 different bank while travelling to spread the risk of card declination. Whether it is Mastercard or VISA, it does not matter so long your cards are from 2 different banks.

Yes, this is against the Card Merchant Agreement and will lead to revocation of the merchant account and subsequent blacklist thereof  biggrin.gif

Refer the merchant agreement, you cannot charge your own personal credit card under your own business establishment.

I dont think bank will really care becoz bank will earn from the interest....
But then again why would the shop owner swipe their own card? The bank will charge around 1-3% interest on all sales done on the machine (unless the shop has high sales volume)..
*
Yes you are right, they dont care they just keep one eye open and another one closed. When i ask round, i have been told this is one of the method to funding or laundering the money. And by doing so is faster and easy way to get immediate cash, more importantly they can do it every month without failed.

What freaking me out is that the bank know it and they just keep quiet about it. It seems that there is no regulation about this kind of laudering money. What is the complaince and the auditor doing...?? hmm.gif

Thanks everyone for the reply .. now the reason my card failed was probably way too much was capped in 1 single day ... I don't know if you guys know but in the US, the way they "get the money" is very weird ... Say if you check in to a hotel, they will ask for your credit card and usually they will just "hold" a certain amount right ? It's the same here too ... but when you check out, you need to swipe it again and sign then only the money get's deducted right ? But in the US no. Your money just get deducted AUTOMATICALLY yawn.gif You only sign the thing when you check in, which is quite scary.

So I knew about this coz it's my 3rd time to US now .. I've told the bank to increase my limit to 15k which is supposed to be more than enough .. So 1st day i reach here, i swipe for car rental which cost maybe 8k or something .. then straight i drive to hotel and swipe again which cost maybe like 5k .. then it failed to go through ...

Since it's a sub card from my dad, i got him to call the bank and blablabla say this cannot that cannot .. in the end we had to do advance payment, cash into the bank and it takes 4 days =.= Luckily I have cash with me .. so i mean if this was my own personal card and i do not have cash .. i think i would have died here ...

So i guess an extra card will do good smile.gif

Dude "hold" or deduct automatically doesnt means you can get it higher than your credit limit..

"hold" aka authorization is a mean to make sure your credit is enough to pay them...

So 8000 + 5000 = 13000 so its either the limit increase havent done or ur limit is over.

So the root cause was Insufficient Credit Limit ... so it's good to have a high CL when travelling.
