Hi. It's been more than a year since I last post in this thread. Hello there uncle Azarimy.

I just got my conditional offer to do Architecture at the University of Sheffield for 2012 admission and I think I remember reading somewhere last year that you are from Sheffield too.

My aimed university was Bath but I was rejected. So uncle, any tips and expectations on Architecture course at Sheffield?

i was in sheffield. a great place to study architecture, especially if u plan to mingle with a lot of brits. the environment is a bit laid back, people arent in a rush, and the staffs are very friendly especially to malaysians. do bear in mind that there are about 1000++ malaysians in sheffield, both studying and working. they're quite integrated into the community, so u can just sell the title 'malaysian student' and people are bound to help u.

some of the lecturers are world experts in their fields. which is why sheffield is ranked pretty high as an architectural research school. so if u have the chance to study under them, take it like there's no tmrw!

Thank you! Now I'm pretty much excited to go there. How about the the amount of workload? Were you under stress during the 3 year course or did you enjoy it?

i didnt study my undergraduates there. just postgraduate (PhD). but from hanging out with the students, i'd say they're no more stressed out that in other architectural schools.

but then again, architecture courses normally have maxed out the stress levels as compared to other courses tongue.gif.

i. at the moment, only IPTAs host accredited degree. however, refer below:

ii. u mean LAM part 3? yeah.

LAM part 2, on the other hand, is still a degree (bachelor's or masters).

iii. well, u can, but u have to do it outside office hours. some firms even outlaw the practice due to conflict of interest etc.
breaking news:

An IPTS in Klang Valley have become the first IPTS to be accredited with LAM Part 1. The accreditation is conditional due to some discrepancies and they have 2 years to remedy it. But it's the first time that a private school EVER to be accredited. I'm sure students will now flock to the IPTS.

Official announcements will be made soon.

thats a good news. KV hmm.gif

haha, hi azarimy, sorry i didn't notice you replied my message...
i was one of the leader of alfa college during the workshop, missed the chance of seeing the real of you during terang workshop hahaha...

its been about two years ago since i posted question about architecture education, and now i'm facing it again, azarimy.
i seek for help last time coz i received a scholarship to study diploma in architecture and i'm in 3rd year at alfa now.

Azarimy may i know will UTM degree part 1 accept me after i completed my diploma? I know there is no cases about accepting a IPTS student into a IPTA before, but i don't have any solution for me to continue my studies after my diploma (because i don't have any financial support for me to go overseas for a accreditation.)
If i'm not mistaken, my lecturer told us before about alfa has received a accreditation letter from UTM, saying that alfa graduates can try to apply into UTM degree... is that true?

I'm soooo lost on my future now after choosing a IPTS route... sad.gif

btw, is anyone here can recommend me any architectural firms that is good for internship? I will be going for half year internship after my final...

UTM recognizes most diplomas out there, but we surely do not accredit anyone. only LAM accredits, not universities. and yes, it means that any IPTS diploma or degree graduates can apply to study in UTM. but unfortunately most IPTS diploma graduates would fall behind the poly diploma graduates, especially when it comes to technical competency and drawing capabilities.

so i guess that's the gist of it. it all boils down to competitions.

Hello,

A friend of mine graduated from UIAM with a first degree honor in Architecture. He's worked for roughly less than two years oversea and his boss is very well satisfied as far as I can see. He's planning to further study in Deakin University, Australia, so I advised him to take direct PhD instead of Master. Would that be recommended ? He'll be sponsored by his company to further study.

u mean 1st class degree? he could choose the fast track PhD if he's willing to spend the extra years. but this is not available in all australian universities. i'd recommend UK/european universities as they have more options on paths to get a PhD.

What ? Does this mean direct PhD is longer than doing master followed by PhD ? rclxub.gif

it can be. postgraduate research degrees are very different from undergraduate taught course. although many have opted for the fast track PhD, a lot of them now stuck at the end of 1st year or 2nd year on the mid-research assessment.

if u're taking into account study years, yes.

but as any other programmes, the gap between part 1 and 2 is where most people get stuck with, as some may be required to practice for 6 months to a year before continuing for part 2. the best way to go straight forward as quick as possible is to score 1st class during part 1.

i guess you're a spm student?

I don't have any arts or drawing background. Will it hinder my progress in architecture?
Although it is not always necessary to have a drawing or artistic background, having those skills greatly boosts your abilities to design. Drawing is a method of communication. Having mastered the basics of drawing prior to studying architecture gives you the advantage to be able communicate and articulate your ideas to others far more efficiently than those who're just starting to learn how to draw.

Bottom line is, even if you've never had a formal training in arts, all you need is a constant interest and a strong motivation to keep you going.

The standard of the 3-year Diploma in Architecture is equivalent to the 2nd year of a relevant Bachelor degree (in some cases 1st year, dependent on case by case basis). (copy from tarc webside)

it is after finish 3 years diploma can direct take degree year 3?

usually after diploma u go straight into 2nd year. u can get into 3rd ONLY IF u scored near 4.00cgpa for ur diploma.

this is apart from the agreement between the diploma and degree programme of the same school. for example, UTM diploma will always join UTM degree at 3rd year. but other diplomas will join UTM at 2nd year. it is safe to say that any diploma holders applying to a degree from different universities will always join at 2nd year.
