styptic pen is only available overseas. I bought mine in Boots London. Its very stinging when applied. Its even more painful than the actual nicking by the blade.

The application is different of what I'm told styptic stops bleeding immediately while alum more anti septic. I do have both but I hardly use the styptic.

Ya, that's the difficult part. Else it's really try and error. Anyway, I've been doing a bit of reading and I think I'll go with Merkur 34c.
*
That's a good choice, a lot of rave reviews of 34c and slightly more aggressive than the ej. Anyways I'm sure if you really enjoy wet shaving than you'll probably end up with a couple of razors.

You made the jump from the mild to the beast. I was from the mild to the adjustables, to be honest where I ended up now was far more than I imagined when I started wetshaving. I really thought having more than one of anything was just silly. Possibly being active on b&b made it more easy and justifiable to have a lot but in any case I've enjoyed every razor, brush, soap and what not that I have. Did I save money? I doubt it, maybe in the next 20 or 30 years. Have I made the an arduous task previously now an enjoyable task? A resounding yes!!! So depends on how you look at it.

U just refute the "cheap and savings argument" which many use as justification to switch to DE.

How ppl looks at things also changes with time.
With family one may shift thing around
Gaining a new hobby etc can change too, it's just life.

Enjoy something in life does not mean need to start a collection. I enjoy ladies but I don't go beyond 1. Hehe

Shaving an arduous task? Sound like trying to conquer mt Everest. Lol

You right about the collection there I won't argue with you on that, truly one can be happy with 1 set up. I do have collecting personality, I'm sure I grow out of it sooner or later this is is probably the cheapest hobby for me.

On shaving being an arduous task, it was for me. I hated it, I used to go the barber every other week just for the shave. But now I enjoy it and look forward to it that's a big plus for me.

Any recommendation for a startup kit ? I don't mind to mix and match.

Was looking at EJ DE89 with Van Der Hagen Set.

That's a straight razor.  For people with steady hands and balls of steel!  cool2.gif  Damn cool.  Would probably try that in the future.  Only thing is that it needs sharpening. CONSTANTLY!

Hi kotmj!  I've read your threads on shoes, tailoring and suitmaking. Really informative! One way I could describe a DE shave in terms you could relate to would be comparing a fused, RTW Padini suit to a fully canvassed masterpiece.  brows.gif One would be able to know the benefits once one has tried.  Heck....I even shave on weekends now!

About late day stubble, I get 'em really late now, much around the time I contemplate 'cabut'-ing from work (around 5-ish).  Results vary, but if you're good with an electric shaver and your face can handle it, you'll be awesome with a DE razor.

And yeah, Gillette has spawned a 5-blade razor:

They seem to add a blade every 4 years or so!

Got it online. Tried as I might, alas, I couldn't find any good ones locally. I'm beginning to think those who still buy the blades (readily available everywhere) are barbers.  The cheap DE razors are almost lethal.

Thanks for pointing out Connaught Shaving!

After reading this thread about 2 years back, I ditched my Mach 3 for a cheap "Laser" brand DE razor I got at Mydin. Dirt cheap and smoother shave. Then it fell and broke...

I bought these:
http://connaughtshaving.com/sssr.html
http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html
http://connaughtshaving.com/allumblock.html

All for about RM135 delivered.

Now I am a happy shavette user. Much smoother than my cheap DE razor.

Shavette > Laser DE > Mach3

While I have not touch the old school shaver for a while, the cartridge system from Gillette Mach 3 onward is such a breeze to use... its a pleasant and satisfying shave every time. I usually shave once a week although I should do it every 2-3 days.

With the Gillette shaving gel ready and a running hot tap, it works wonder to prep the face. The towel with wet with hot water wrapping the face for a brief moment, really warm up the skin and open up pores for the shave. Wipe dry and then the gel, and proceed to shave.

The Fusion 5 blades is way too expensive and can't justify the result per $... Mach 3 is best ROI and result.

Once done, I used the cheapo Brut Aftershave...for that cooling down and closing up the pores and to sooth the skin which essentially being scrapped... LOL! I'm so glad that can still find them after so many decades...

And the result is smooth, nick free shave... and the lingering brut after shave gives off a refreshing feel...

Why did u move away from DE to cartridge system?
I find DE giving me a closer shave than than Mach 3 or fusion. I have to agree DE requires more time and blades are a lot cheaper than cartridge system

This may provide the same adv as cartridge system, start up cost on the high side

I think it have to do with the technology improvement I guess... yes Cartridge is expensive but some how DE give a more nick and cuts as it is sharper on DE and also fixed DE head.

Then again, Mach 3 is cheap enough and you can use it shave other part of body with ease... thumbup.gif

On a skilled hand and given more time, DE will not give you any nicks and cuts. Not have any cuts for a long time. Cartridge let one be a little more careless. Issue here mainly the user not the device

Beluga razor can solve the issue DE have, not on a fix head. Tempted to get one to try out.

Mach 3 cheap enough? How much you paying for and how often you change blade? DE hard if you shaving your legs, armpits or chest

I found that after a few months using the DE razor, it was actually easier and more comfortable to shave other body parts than using the Mach 3. I was pleasantly surprised to find no itchiness after shaving more sensitive areas with the DE.

The shavette is just as comfortable, but a bit tricky. Need more practice I guess.

Just started using DE but with a China made Razor, still sourcing for a good razor smile.gif.

Just wondering how do you guys dispose the DE blades properly ? Hopefully you guys just don't wrap and throw in the trash can ?
