Heavy duty commercial tile will also crack and break if there is shear force is applied by failing base foundation of the tiles  biggrin.gif

Or improper installation (put only two pau sized dollop for whole tile expecting mortar to flow like water)

Or if want to tile, I'd use smaller tile since if there is sinking anywhere most likely the crack will be on grouting not on tile itself perhaps. Still can patch laugh.gif

Polished surface slippery. Rough surface will stain with soil and become more and more permanent smile.gif

For garden:
1) Make your own concrete slabs and lay them on the ground as your walkway.
2) Lay that pavement brick like you commonly see. The foundation is just sand.

Someone in FB [Buy Nothing Project (BNP) Klang Valley & PJ] giving out free concrete slabs; some 3 inch thick concrete slabs measuring around 2 feet x 2 feet. They are about 80kg per piece, you need 2 men to carry each piece.

u will need some heavy lifters, n lorry or 3 pickup trucks, each 80kg

the price will be ok if the range between RM2 to RM3 per Ft excluding materials. it should be cheaper if more work to be done.

a good quality tiles like white horse should cost around 5.50 to 6 for the 1 x 2 tiles, and guocera much higher around 7. bear in mind make sure the tiles is fully coated, not half to have a longer life.

which area are you planning to lay tiles? whole house or just the parch?

Added on February 21, 2011, 2:19 pmone small lorry (maybe 1 ton) of sand should cost around 3 to 400 and each cement should cost around 15 or 16...so, dont let the contractor cheat u... smile.gif

Why need to put tile there? If the foundation is stable like soil is not sunk on one side to the other, then nothing will crack. Why not just but pavement block like those on walkway?

Thanks for the recommendation. this is one of my options as well.

Hi guys, my house is newly renovated about three years, from around two years ago, i noticed that my tiles will have loud popping sound at night, my guess is because i turn on aircon at night, causing contraction of the tile. Is this because of poor workmanship? This has affected my sleep as sometimes in the middle of the night it will pop sharply, and it goes on for a few seconds. Will the tiles come loose in future?

Yes. Itโ€™s a time bomb. It will fail sooner or later. It happened to my sisterโ€™s house after few years of renovation too. The usual suspect is poor adhesion.

Thanks for your reply boss. I have not engaged a contractor yet, so will definitely be contacting you once the site is close to ready for viewing.

Your prices above include removing of old tiles as well? The area is around 1,500 sq ft and has existing tiles.

Thanks.

If your old tiles are still in good condition, can consider using Mapei Eco Prime Grip or Bond-Ace G88 bonding agent for tile on tile application.
