If your old tiles are still in good condition, can consider using Mapei Eco Prime Grip or Bond-Ace G88 bonding agent for tile on tile application.

Thanks. Honestly, I didn't know this was possible.

Will discuss and see if this can be done at my place. I still find it quite amusing that tiles are actually the cheapest part of the work. It's the workmanship that will determine if you blow your budget or not.

Anyone knows approx how much per tile for a 1'x1' tile?

Preferably 20mm thick with rough surface.
*
Starting from rm1.80 till rm3
Depending on brands & country of origin 😁

In my case when I asked for a quote the higher costs were on hacking. Hence why I searched for an alternative and coincidently I found this when I watched a gwailou video doing it.

I always buy my own materials as they usually always cheap out on the materials. Make sure to get at least C2TE grade of tile adhesive (Lafarge Tile Adhesive 361 or Mapex Adesilex P9).

If you want super safe installation and have budget to blow, get C2TE S1 grade one. Lafarge Superbond 369 or Mapex Keraflex Maxi S1.

Don't let the tiler mix with cement btw. And always ensure the tiler back butter the tiles.

Hi guys, my house is newly renovated about three years, from around two years ago, i noticed that my tiles will have loud popping sound at night, my guess is because i turn on aircon at night, causing contraction of the tile. Is this because of poor workmanship? This has affected my sleep as sometimes in the middle of the night it will pop sharply, and it goes on for a few seconds. Will the tiles come loose in future?

I'd say wrong method or installation SOP smile.gif

Depends on tiles, some need to soak with water before installation and some not necessarily. It is just air-cond. What about those who lived in 4 seasons countries?

Some use special adhesive mix with cement and some use as is. Mine I think was just cement and been more than 10 years. smile.gif

Some tiles are too porous. It will absorb water from cement too fast that it has not enough time to adhere properly.

You can google anything you want to know about tiling in Internet nowadays. smile.gif

Ceramic tile cannot be used for flooring right?
Because it's too "soft" for the foot/car pressure

A Niro Granite 4' x 2' tile will cost between RM110 to RM130 per piece. The same pattern and specification but 2' x 2' will cost between RM40 to RM50 per piece.

2' x 2' between RM2 and RM3 per sqft. If it is a bigger tile then it will be between RM4 and up to RM10 per sqft also not every tiler can do large format tiles well, many will not touch anything beyond the usual sizes found in residential premises as it takes a special skill and for the most part you cannot take any short cuts when installing it.

Great advise. I've yet to discuss with my potential contractors about this though.

Is this something which you've already at your place? If you have, were you happy with the outcome?

It could probably work in my case, but I have the following concerns (listing it down here so that I remember to ask contractors later):

1. How much height would this add to the existing flooring? I'm adding plaster ceiling as well so will this make the space look/feel smaller?
2. How to deal with the current floor skirting which uses the existing tiles? Possible to hack just the skirting or just cover?
3. How to deal with areas that have a step down feature? i.e. bathrooms and kitchen (which I plan to use the same tile and same level as the rest of the space). Will there be a need to raise the floor of the step down areas?

I'll do some research and see if anyone else faced the same concerns above.

1) 1/2"-1" depending on how thick he apply the tile adhesive

2) Hack the skirting off only, cover wont be pretty as it will be too thick

3) If you want them to be flat then ask your contractor to level them with screed first, if the difference is 4" or more then can go for unbonded screed, else have to do bonded screed preferably with bonding agent (make some holes, then cement + susu slurry then screed on top).

Thanks for all your feedback. Definitely something I'll be discussing for my renovation project.

I'll be updating the thread with whatever decision I take to hopefully contribute to this thread.

Hi Adwan,

Based on the attached photo, I assumed the floor tiles is either porcelain or sintered stone (engineered stone). Porcelain is more economical compared to sintered stone. On the otherhand, sintered stone is the real deal and designed to last a life time. The installation method are the same using C2 class adhesive from either Sika or Laticrete or plain old MaxBond adhesive. The sintered stone comes in large format of 3.2m x 1.4m and will requires fabrication.

For residential, you may opt to have a thickness of either 6mm (Neolith) or 8mm (Dekton), pending on manufacturers. The installation price depends on the dimension and the colour selection. To reduce wastages, it is always recommended to have the following dimensions;

700mm x 700mm
800mm x 800mm
700mm x 1,400mm

The price starts from MYR 90/sqft for entry level colour. For wet kitchen with an area measuring at 20' x 10', will easily caused you a total of between MYR 18K and MYR 28K (popular colour)

I want to change old tiles (1.5X1.5) to new ones (2x2) in my living room apartment (400sqft).

I have checked some shops in Jalan Ipoh but not sure how to differentiate grade 1, 2 etc and good brand. I think they have Citygres

can someone please advise where to get affordable and good quality tiles?

and please pass contact of cheap contractor...bangla also ok as long good workmanship. I have received ridiculous quotation like RM10K without tiles.

please help
