Dear Sifus, I don't understand about the custom ROM. What does it mean by Themes??

1. Does it mean that the user interface of the custom ROM is different from the Official Samsung ROM?
2. What Should I use to back up my contacts, setting and apps for the first time I flashed to custom ROM?
3. What is a kernel? Does is mean I can change the kernel without changing/ flashing to the custom ROM?
4. I saw some posts that mention some of the ROM is having problem with lagginess, Wifi, GPS locking time, Notification bar, can't download from market place etc...... sound so scary. Can anyone clarify these??
5. Can I restore back to Samsung Original ROM if I'm not happy with the performance of the custom ROM or if I want to send in for warranty claim?
6. Noob question....What is a homemade jig?????

Sorry for so many noobs question. If it's too troublesome to reply all. I would really appreciate if provided a link.
Many thanks to all the sifus.

Custom rom is where u get the unofficial update from developer. The right way is to get it from samsung, through kies (which is the official one). Themes is like a package where modification made to notification bar, wallpaper, home screen, dockbar, drawer etc. Basically its customize the interface of our sgs. Custom rom basically is a modified version of official rom. They were made to provide a better response, customize, speed, and add many addons which will make our sgs snappier. An official rom is available through regions; meaning different region will get different update, different modem. This cannot be altered if u are on stock rom. However, a custom rom allows u to have different setup; different modem, different kernal etc.

1. Yes and no. It can look exactly like an official rom (if u wanted to) or u can have a heavily customized interface.

2. U can syc with google contact to back up ur contacts. To backup sms, use sms backup+. For apps, normally we all used titanium backup (free/paid - but it requires the phone to be rooted first) or my backup pro (paid). But if u allowed google to backup ur application , once u have flashed to custom rom, the phone will automatically restore ur files when u logged in (only if u allow for automatic restore; can check this through settings>privacy>mobile backup and restore)

3. Kernal act as a layer between hardware and software. It controls the process, ram management, network etc. U can either a) installed custom kernal while maintaining ur official rom or b) installed custom kernal with custom rom

4. Well. All those problem derived from a stock rom. With custom rom, u can minimized (if not eliminate) most of the problems.

5. Definitely! It is easier than installing a custom rom! Just u have to ensure that u can access 3 button download mode.

6. When u brick ur phone (cannot enter the phone, cannot enter download/recovery mode thru 3 button combos, stuck in boot loop; practically ur phone screwed), here comes the homemade jig. Basically it tries to enter the download mode (although it is impossible when ur phone does not respond). It consists of resistor and micro usb.

Ultimately, u can go to the front page and read the whole thing. Its virtually impossible to brick ur phone if u read all the steps and follows them. Happy flashing!

1. yes, that what theme means right? decoration and stuff, nothing to do with performance, unless of course the animation make you fell the phone faster and such. custom rom can change theme. if yo9u dont like the theme that come with it, you can change it. no sweat

2. contact the best is to sync with gmail, setting you cant save, apps most of us use titanium backup, and yes, all your game save and data usually will be backup as well, i recommend you to use the buy version of titanium if you can, one click to restore all the apps.

3. i dont know how to answer what is kernel. but yes, you can change kernel without having to change to custom rom

4. no worry about this stuff, it just bugs and such,if you dont feel satisfied with the custom rom, you can always change back to samsung official, this phone is easy to change rom/firmware, you can upgrade downgrade sideways front back easily. this phone follow you not you follow the phone.

5. nombor 4 answer half of it. if you want to send to warranty, ALWAYS ALWAYS change back to official, if not, they can make cases out of it, example: your volume button broken, they can say, that because you flash unofficial firmware, that make your volume button broken, this is not cover by warranty,  whistling.gif  this thing can happen, eventhough i havent heard any of it yet  biggrin.gif

6. erm... may i ask did you read post number 3 on the first page? cause if the explanation is not clear please tell me, i may change it for the better  thumbup.gif

First of all, I would like to thank TS for answering my questions so patiently. But I still have some doubts.

1. How can I improve my SGS speed without lossing the original UI from Samsung???

2. I heard Titanium Backup only work for ROOTED SGS. As My SGS is still with original Samsung ROM and not rooted yet. Can it really function in my SGS?

3. Does it mean if I just do Kerneling on my SGS, the apps and data in my phone won't be deleted and I don't need a backup? Does kernelling improve the speed of my apps and scrolling??

4. Do I need to backup the original ROM/ Firmware before flashing to my new custom ROM? (It Clears the doubt of Question 5 as well)

How you can help again. Many many thanks.

I'm using the Speemod kernel in my phone, with the touchwiz UI, nothing else tampered with. It's fast, blazing fast and probably nothing else you'd wanna do with it. Flashing the kernel won't delete your data + etc, but it's recommended to do so. But so far I've flashed two different kernels and both do not delete my data.

I'm on stock froyo + k12R speedmod kernel. Works fast.!

My take on the apple / android "which is better " question.

It's basically the same as the macs vs pc's ... for people who aren't so techincally inclined, who doesnt want to tinker with their equiptment, who are satisfied with their stock equiptment, who are willing to pay a premium for something that runs as well as stated on the box, these people will b the die hard apple fans. They look onto the people who 'flash their phones' with horror.

The flip side to those people are the pc/android bunch. These guys want the extra bang for their buck; overclocking, flashing roms, hackintoshing .... everything to run a better, faster piece of equiptment for much less $$ than the previous bunch of people.

No use convincing either side the merits of each particular camp, all mainly die hard.

You guys know which camp you are in.
*
I agree with you to a certain extent. But that doesn't mean a layman cannot learn to tinker their phone.

QUOTE(Raiko @ Feb 3 2011, 04:43 PM)
guys, the phone can last for the whole day at medium usage ? is it like stupid if i get the phone now ?
*
Depends on what your definition of medium usage. As to mine, the phone lasts all day long. It is definitely worth it despite tegra2 phones are coming in a few months.

Like cod33 said, it is the default one coming from insanity rom. There are plenty more beautiful one. I can find you a link on how you can make your own one. Not now. If you are impatient, you can google this.

haha then i must be kinda weird. i've been using Macbook for the past 3 years, but I've never really owned an iPhone myself (sharing with GF occasionally but technically not mine).

die also I won't use anything but Mac, but I'm quite happy tinkering with my SGS.

Exactly. I stop treating normal person like they cannot learn on their own discovering on how to tinker their gadgets.

1. Just flash a kernel like speedmod. No need to back up or to be rooted.
2. Must be rooted for tb to function. See first post for rooting instructions.
3. Yes, no need back up. Although it is advisable to do so. Improves performance and smoothness radically!
4. No need. Stock official firmware is available online.

1. there are custom roms without theme. meaning that you get all the best experience from the custom rom with the original look.

2. no, you need to be rooted, most backup application need root. rooting is easy for our phone, google: z4root xda, it is and application, install it, press the root button, walah your done, you have a rooted phone. now you need to install busybox, https://market.android.com/details?id=stericson.busybox (man i starting to love this web market).

3. yes, kernel does improve performance of the phone. from my experience, no, it does not wipe your app

4. nope. you can always download the firmware again at samfirmware. look at the asia region (green colour) all the firmware starting with DX__ is our region firmware

Wanna ask about the backup and restore function located at CWM Recovery, What are differences among:
1. Backup DATA: data + dbdata + cache
2. Restore
3. Backup All
4. Restore All (Be careful!)

reporting back from gps hardware fix .. it was super easy, but shit happens and sadly i broke the antenna ... damn emo now ...

it was seriously so easy, till it made me curious and i tried to pry the down part of it end up whole thing came off ... opening the cover was relatively easy, search for rectangular holes on the side and put in a small flat screw driver then slowly pry it open, each sides consist of 2+ holes .. do it under a table light, the easiest hole to spot is beside the volume rocket, it is hidden below the chrome part ..

i am now hoping if anyone here familiar with electronics, is there any conductive glue so that i can just glue it back or the only way is by soldering? now living without gps, lucky still got data plan for google map ... cry.gif

sorry to hear that notworthy.gif that why people always mention dont go happy bending........

the only solution i heard was soldering, if you still under warranty, put it back all together and just say your gps suddenly stop working.
