I found that even I've upgraded my firmware to froyo. My phone is still very laggy. I admire my friend's Iphone4. So smooth, be it scrolling or apps. After jailbreak....he can even download apps FOC. Gosh..have I bought a wrong phone? Help!!!!!!!!

Do I really need to root my phone to improve my phone smoothness?
Will there be any differences between official rom and custom rom?
Which rom will be the most stable and give speed and smooth performance?

Seems like jd4eva is having the same problem as mine.

@Gmhafiz thank you so much for your helping hands and patience. May I know which Rom and Kernel are the most stable and smooth? I have zero knowledge on custom rom. If I'm rooting for the first time. Titanium backup just won't work, right? Wat should I use then? My backup pro (I'm willing to pay if it's good)

@kcwo May I know what custom rom u r using?

Hi Star_Knight79, I just migrated from Darky to Doc Kitchen rom. Both rom are great and depend on your taste. You can try to hardcore kernel first before you start flashing to custom rom. I still learning from our sifu here. My advice is prepared your homemade jig before you start. I experience stuck at USB/PC screen and can not boot into neither Recovery nor download screen. Make me sweating. sweat.gif

Dear Sifus, I don't understand about the custom ROM. What does it mean by Themes??

1. Does it mean that the user interface of the custom ROM is different from the Official Samsung ROM?
2. What Should I use to back up my contacts, setting and apps for the first time I flashed to custom ROM?
3. What is a kernel? Does is mean I can change the kernel without changing/ flashing to the custom ROM?
4. I saw some posts that mention some of the ROM is having problem with lagginess, Wifi, GPS locking time, Notification bar, can't download from market place etc...... sound so scary. Can anyone clarify these??
5. Can I restore back to Samsung Original ROM if I'm not happy with the performance of the custom ROM or if I want to send in for warranty claim?
6. Noob question....What is a homemade jig?????

Sorry for so many noobs question. If it's too troublesome to reply all. I would really appreciate if provided a link.
Many thanks to all the sifus.

1. yes, that what theme means right? decoration and stuff, nothing to do with performance, unless of course the animation make you fell the phone faster and such. custom rom can change theme. if yo9u dont like the theme that come with it, you can change it. no sweat

2. contact the best is to sync with gmail, setting you cant save, apps most of us use titanium backup, and yes, all your game save and data usually will be backup as well, i recommend you to use the buy version of titanium if you can, one click to restore all the apps.

3. i dont know how to answer what is kernel. but yes, you can change kernel without having to change to custom rom

4. no worry about this stuff, it just bugs and such,if you dont feel satisfied with the custom rom, you can always change back to samsung official, this phone is easy to change rom/firmware, you can upgrade downgrade sideways front back easily. this phone follow you not you follow the phone.

5. nombor 4 answer half of it. if you want to send to warranty, ALWAYS ALWAYS change back to official, if not, they can make cases out of it, example: your volume button broken, they can say, that because you flash unofficial firmware, that make your volume button broken, this is not cover by warranty,  whistling.gif  this thing can happen, eventhough i havent heard any of it yet  biggrin.gif

6. erm... may i ask did you read post number 3 on the first page? cause if the explanation is not clear please tell me, i may change it for the better  thumbup.gif

First of all, I would like to thank TS for answering my questions so patiently. But I still have some doubts.

1. How can I improve my SGS speed without lossing the original UI from Samsung???

2. I heard Titanium Backup only work for ROOTED SGS. As My SGS is still with original Samsung ROM and not rooted yet. Can it really function in my SGS?

3. Does it mean if I just do Kerneling on my SGS, the apps and data in my phone won't be deleted and I don't need a backup? Does kernelling improve the speed of my apps and scrolling??

4. Do I need to backup the original ROM/ Firmware before flashing to my new custom ROM? (It Clears the doubt of Question 5 as well)

How you can help again. Many many thanks.

reporting back from gps hardware fix .. it was super easy, but shit happens and sadly i broke the antenna ... damn emo now ...

it was seriously so easy, till it made me curious and i tried to pry the down part of it end up whole thing came off ... opening the cover was relatively easy, search for rectangular holes on the side and put in a small flat screw driver then slowly pry it open, each sides consist of 2+ holes .. do it under a table light, the easiest hole to spot is beside the volume rocket, it is hidden below the chrome part ..

i am now hoping if anyone here familiar with electronics, is there any conductive glue so that i can just glue it back or the only way is by soldering?  now living without gps, lucky still got data plan for google map ... cry.gif
*
Er.... You mean google map is using data plan. Not GPS??

Darky's is easier to install... its all in one and ready to be played with...

Doc u need to cook the rom, u need to experiment a bit for the right concoction of base rom, csc, and modem (well at least i do XD), apps that u want and so on...
Try darky's 9.2... its easy, just flash thru odin and ur set to go, of coz there's an extra step which is to install the apps u want thru the resurrection.zip.... u dun even need to be rooted to be on darky now... XD

Added on February 5, 2011, 1:21 am

i was curious about super glue when u mentioned it earlier and i saw it would absorb moisture and might corrode... not sure thou.. XD

hopefully it works for u...

Do you mean that I don't have to backup my apps when flashed to Darky ROM?

But It drains battery superbly fast. How many hours can last?

1st gps lock took me around 5 to 6 minutes, then the rest of the time is almost instant, i tried locking in 2 secs... but really rare la XD

i tested it with a silicone case on... SGS gps antenna works fine with a casing, unlike DHD (muahahaha biased me)

Thank you so much for your help. Knocked out yesterday. Not try yet. Will do later.

Anyway I saw engadget mentioned that the new Android Market Website doesn't not work with Rooted Device.
Is like a jailbreak iphone 4???
Is it possible for us to unroot our device :-p

Just installed darky's 9.2 Extreme Edition.
Performance is fast compared to stock, have not installed voodoo lagfix yet.
Just wanted to post to help other noobs like myself who have never installed a custom rom before.
I did not use odin.
1) Go to market and type speedmod, you will see the one click install for speedmod. Install it. This will give you CWM (if you dont know what CWM is its like recovery 2e)
2)Next just go to recovery mode (volume up + home button + power) and make sure that the speedmod is disabled. Its under the lagfix option.
3)Now go to XDA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091) and download the file under the heading
Normal CWM Version [just as usual]
4)After done downloading load it to root of your internal sd
5)Rename it to update.zip
7)Go to market and type darky. Download the darky configurator. Run the app and configure the way you want.
8)I chose voodoo in the darky config app but have not run it yet
6)Shut down phone and go to recovery mode and go to the option "apply sdcard:update zip"
7)Let it install and there you have it Darky 9.2 extreme edition.
note 1, I had superuser before doing the above (forgot how i got it), not sure if necessary.
note 2, I said install the speedmod one click from market, dont worry about choosing either voodoo or speedmod in darky's config later.
note 3, I was running stock DXJPE with all lagfixes DISABLED before I started.
note 4, All contacts, messages, apps will be deleted so BACKUP before starting.

Hope I have not missed out anything.
My market could not download after installing Darky, soulution - go back to recovery and wipe cache.

Update, quadrant score with voodoo lagfix disabled - 1188.

I appreciate for the sharing. But I feel not secure to do it this way coz there are some uncertainties from you. :-p

no prob...

good luck going into the dark side...

its possible to unroot, easy enough, our SGS can be unrooted just by flashing back a stock firmware with the stock kernel... Odin's the way to go

For junior SGS owners, i still recommend using darky's resurrection edition, which is to flash thru odin, its really the best and easiest way to get an error free custom ROM on ur SGS (from what i think that is, coz some if ur on some ROMs and when u suddenly switch to another, it is prone to have some errors, i believe using Odin is the best way to go)
But bare in mind, do a backup first since flashing using odin will repartition the phone and u will lose important stuffs like ur apps, sms, contacts, etc...

Thanks, CrossX.

Lately, I encounter keyboad hangs and lag when typing Memo and Message. Hopefully after kernelling. The problem will be solved.
By the way, is Darky ROM USer interface is the same like Samsung Original??
