Wow, amadeo called me (I didn't even have his number!) to ask me to start this.

So I shall! But I will need someone who is always around to take some of the responsibility e.g. user lists, because I haven't had much time to get on the forums these days.

That lucky person will be someone who posts on this first page! ;D

Thanks chiahau, I've edited it to link to you. Also did a fair bit of cleanup because some of the information up there is 4 years old. :/ (And some still are, though I'm not so sure we care for that!)

lol, 3 days ago, i was thinking, erm the last thread is getting long, about time to start a new thread, then i was planning to PM amadeo... tongue.gif

btw, albnok, if its okay to change all the price (of the pricelist) to blue color (item name stay black), just the price/currency to blue. easier for people to see. or maybe red for hot items or promo item price like F20 for 299 PWP tongue.gif

and chiahao, do u mind, if u could add "lastest version: V#.##) beside the Alpha model (in the namelist0

if you want to service your camera , the rm150 service charge at Sony Center includes cleaning (sensor ,viewfinder). But if want to send just for cleaning, rm150 i dont think is worthy. If other service shop im not sure, should be cheap/cheaper than rm150 nod.gif

kopitiam: subjective. there are small (easy to travel) type, and big (2.8meter) type... then umbrella got smaller (30cm) and big (40cm)... diff types brackets, some fit, some need modify or add adapter(coldshoe) for sony hotshoe.

ranging combo from as cheap as rm160 whole set to rm300 whole set.

8tvt: its as good. smile.gif

i have 3xsmall LS(lightstand), that fit into a custom bag, with many umbrella that i can carry for outdoor work. then 2x huge one that i leave it indoor. all of them has modified adapter.

One thing you must not miss in Hat Yai, Thailand: the infamous Coconut Ice Cream!!

So how is a coconut ice cream prepared?

First, choose a coconut and cut it into a bowl shape.

user posted image

Then, cut the coconut into half and pour away the juice somewhere else. Scrape out the coconut meat and add 3 scoops of ice cream, along with other toppings.

user posted image
From left: kacang, atachi, sweet corn and pulut!

Add the toppings one by one over the ice cream~

Lastly, add some milk.

Something Like this

Taken at 17mm

note: focus on the edge shifting.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Someone told that it was the Wide angle effect? is this Normal? rclxub.gif

QUOTE
Drawbacks

    - Corners at 17mm. Vignetting, softness, and aberrations, barrel distortion oh my.
    - Not AF-S. While the focus is nearly AF-S fast, the big issue is that you can't override focus manually.

Positives

    - Sharp as a knife, mostly. Outside the corners at 17mm and at 24mm wide open, this lens posts resolution numbers on my D200 that are about as good as they get.
    - The affordable 28-80mm for DX users. Considering the price differential between this and the Nikkor 17-55mm, there's little tradeoff being made. Indeed, this lens is smaller and lighter than the Nikkor, yet except at 17mm, holds its own against that lens.

Codyx: Yes, barrel distortion is quite common, especially on the wide-angle end of a zoom lens. Sometimes it will start to pincushion (opposite of barrel) at the tele end.

The Sony 50mm F1.8 DT SAM focuses much, much closer and has cleaner bokeh. Good wide open, too.

shorter MFD
means the lens can go closer to the subject to get close-up focus

don't see any problem in normal usage unless you are dealing with professional architectual photography. I think 35mm f1.8 is much more comfortable to use in aps-c bodies,I am planning to get myself 1 also tongue.gif

Codyx: You can fix it with Photoshop. Also, DxO Optics Pro has an automated process to remove distortion from selected lenses based on focal length and focus distance (if you notice, barrel distortion is made worse when focusing closer.)

zeipher: I think shot #1 with more focus towards the two uh... runway workers would be better.

sadly, its a world wide shortage on A55 and A580 (plentiful of A33 thou) even u preorder, becareful, sony store house themself is empty of A580 (and A55)

even after cny, i doubt u can get cheap A55/580 price... and the A560 might not launch in many country, not sure Sony will shift their manufacturing focus on A55/580, since they sell a lot better then expected (more then A33!) and the production still cant meet world wide demand (including nikon and pentax demand...)

actually, there is still some stock left, some dealer just sell it at RRP price to take advantage of the market, eg. fotokem... u might as well better head off to nearest Sony Center, and ask for "sony free gifts" like sony survival bag, etc (fotokem gives china bag (rm20) and china tripod(rm40)...)

Yes they have it. rm3088 A580+kit sony retail(if i am correct), fotokem 2999 (some able to nego till 2900), street price should be around 2799 (2.8). u can always refer to the first page of the thread for pricing. i asked for A55kit 2 days ago, 2899 no nego =.= crap... not sure if they lock the A580 to rrp or not...

the sensor works better, yes, the sensor (apsc 16mp) itself is slightly better then canon 60D (550D/7D 18mp apsc sensor), but in terms of controls(physically), 60D is in diff category/class (hence the price tag~). but Sony is more feature packed, and user friendly, easy to use and learn, what's even better, sony provide free basic workshop (usually fully booked/reserved)... and the best thing of all, cheaper! even accessories and lens are cheaper too! (except the 50F1.8 (codyx hahaha))

seems like a55 and a580 are heating up globally, which is a good thing that i chose sony to begin with. furthermore, with the rumors of lens disconnuation like 50f18, 18250 and 300g. one could only wonder what replacement will be pathing their way to the new market for sony. zeiss!? (but where to find moolah?)

all in all, sony is going to the right path. (PSP2 announcement in 3 hours omg!)

lol...what shortage? there's always the A33, which is still a very good camera.

i see a very bright future for DSLT cameras. will wait for its technology to advance b4 splurging on a high-end model. coz for now, very little separates the A33 and A55.

ahpingko: Infrared remotes CAN function from behind the camera, IF it can bounce off something, into the camera's IR sensor.

Same goes for wireless flash.

Yeah you want a step up ring (where your lens is 49mm and the filter is 55mm).

albnok, answered all.... yes u can if u have a wall or some object to bounce off...but normally i used my remote + tripod to shoot myself...now no need worry passing my dslr to strnger, no need worry while waiting for 10sec timer to run and worry someone come and snatch and best of all, if u just press and hold the shutter release button, you can continuously shoot multiple pics, so increase chance of successful shots

gjtan, I will be aroudn 11 to meet up with shootkk and the rest..should be until 1 or 2 pm, depending on the rest of the ppl smile.gif I wanna see if can try out the 35mm and 85 SAM..contemplating between these 2

Hi everyone. NEX 3 user here, mind if I join this thread instead of NEX? Sony Alpha NEX ma, can join either right? tongue.gif

I'm the dude who bought cassplayer's SAL55200 on page 111 of Alpha Thread V49. Just thought I'd update you guys on it, without meaning any harm to cassplayer (buy 2nd hand sure have these little problems right?).

The lens' aperture was not stopping down. I sent the lens to Cheah Camera Repair shop and just got it back today. He said the aperture spring was rusty and broken. he also didn't know it could break biggrin.gif Repair cost RM120 FYI. I suck at bargaining sweat.gif Thanks cassplayer for the RM50 refund, that was very nice of you thumbup.gif

Here's a sample pic I took of my dog. NEX3 + SAL55200 + Fotodiox A-mount adapter. Quite noisy bcos ISO1600 and not very bright place, plus I suck at noise removal sad.gif I'm liking the lens smile.gif

Also want to dispel some ideas that the 3rd party adapter can spoil the lens aperture. I don't think it will, but if it breaks again and it seems like the adapter's fault I'll update you guys again biggrin.gif

well, we all learn something new everyday. wink.gif perhaps sony didn't put enough lubricant on the lens' mechanism during production (the lubricant coating should lubricate the movement of the spring as well as prevent it from rusting).

these are the terms:

stopping down = small aperture = minus f/stop = big f/stop
eg : 1/22

stopping up = big aperture = plus f/stop = small f/stop
eg : 1/4

some of the jargon that being used..

*"stopping" and plus/minus is a verbs (behaviour) to decrease/increase the aperture

zstan : If you want my opinion I would say get the 35mm first. Not because it's cheap but because both the 24mm and the 28mm on APS-C is frustrating to say the least. Like the others have said, it's not wide enough. Even 24mm is not wide enough. For wide you'll have to fall back to your kitlens.

With a 35mm on an APS-C you WILL KNOW even before you look through the viewfinder that it's NOT A WIDE lens. You will forget about getting wide shots straight off and concentrate on getting the shot on a normal focal length. Remember, 35mm on APS-C will give you roughly a view like a 50mm on a FF so that's a normal focal length.

Since you're looking for a prime, then the 35mm will make sense and will help you in your composition more than a 24mm can.

reason for new lens:
- i sorely lack a bright lens. f2.8 tak cukup if no flash. iso cannot pump too high.

reason for 24mm:
-bright
-good walkaround lens due to the focal length
-can use as portrait lens as well due to the really short MFD
-Zeissssssssssssssss & can be used 5-10 years later if i switch to FF
-but...EXPENSIVE

reason for 35mm:
-cheap and bright and light
-might be a bit too tight for other things besides portrait hmm.gif
-bright

filter, seriously, sg wang/lowyat is cutting throat price.. they label filter price to 4XX den discount to 1XX, ask you wan or not..
but cleaning kit, like blower/microfibre cloth, go the pc department, find those LCD screen cleaner set (should be <20) with 2 cloths, 1 blower, 1 brush and 1 detergent (not really recommend use this detergent la, since it might cause damage to coating)

no ar. before i brought my camera to repair, for some reason the flash gun has been a bit crazy. sometimes firing, sometimes half power, sometimes 1/32 sometimes full blast. no i didn't drop it or anything.

so i thought it should be my camera's problem, as i dropped it real hard at korea.

but now....still not working properly leh the external flash WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFf mad.gif

evilhomura89: Nicely done on #1. The color is slightly murky but otherwise commendable effort at HDR since there are no halos.

#2 would be better without that thing in the top-right corner.

I like the black-and-white toning of the ape. Very gray-ish.

zstan: How nice of them to let you keep the replaced parts, especially for that price, just as proof!

And oooh the slider unit.

In your situation I'd go for a flash.

death_nite: Contrast detect is slower but accurate; phase detect is faster but the mirror flips down, causing your Live View to be interrupted. Note that contrast detect only happens in Focus Check Live View.

Codyx: Would rather you tune it so the trees are green. So you get a green versus red picture.

h_n_s: You can't check shutter count, and it doesn't matter.

geekster129: You could reshoot this picture in portrait orientation in order to have more space up and down (which you can crop later).

So you get a green versus red picture.

h_n_s: You can't check shutter count, and it doesn't matter.

geekster129: You could reshoot this picture in portrait orientation in order to have more space up and down (which you can crop later).

thanks for the comment
for #2 i sort of figure that out but lazy to do photo-chop, haha
for the orang utan shot, i like it since it shows its emotion

Haha...I've been through a similar scenario, works other way round though. A promoter from Panasonic was selling their almighty GH-1 and telling me stories bout it's sensor's APS-C sized. HAHA. rclxms.gif I've even paid him compliment after a very very elaborated technical specs explanation after that. The look on his face is very satisfied, to have thought that he'd convinced someone to buy his bullshit.

Erm, any lens would do, but wide angle would serve better.

kopitiam: No, though since the Peleng is actually a T-mount lens, not an M42 lens, there is minor clipping on the edges. You can come and see for yourself. wink.gif

Like the 10-24 or etc.

so just buy wide angle lense.

2 choices:

1. Use tripod.

2. Buy a few external flashes and stands and use wireless flash.

If those both also cannot apply then you are sh*t outta luck!
Last resort - pump ISO to max and then convert to black and white.

noise is noise, EV is to control exposure, whether to over or under expose the image. over exposing will kill the noise, YES, thats because you are causing the each pixel to be saturated with light, causing it to give a 8-bit number of 11111111 each = total WHITE-out

Upping the EV will result in slower shutter speed. This is fine for stationary subjects but if there is any movements then you will sure to get motion blur.

lwliam: Overexposing with high ISO does not mean oversaturation. Though in a lot of cases, a low-light scene will have a bright light, and the subject is way darker. We only care to expose the subject correctly and can blow out the light - though our Alphas prefer to expose the light correctly, causing underexposure and more noise.

yes true that... but probably due to my nature of shooting; subject correctly exposed, in blowsh's point, majority of the scene will be 'more' over than usual, causing it to appear less noisy

i tried with flash, and higher shutter speed.. the ambient light is darken..
the space is too big to bounce the light..

that's the reason i using slow shutter and high iso..
coz my intention is to capture the surroundings..

but slow shutter blurred out moving ppl..
that's my first time in that environment btw.. alot of things to try..
and like to learn from the mistake..

start with this... auto flash (doesnt matter bounce or direct) + s/s of 1/30s.. shutter priority...

8tvt: Since you cannot buy any more lenses, just use the brightest lens in that focal range that you want e.g. 18mm F3.5, 28mm F2.8, 50mm F1.8, 55mm F4.0 (of 55-200mm). (Instead of using 18-55mm at 55mm F5.6).

I like the color combo of #2 but the other buildings could use some slightly more telephoto perspective.

death_nite: #1 with the proper WB would be great. I like #3 how it brings into context the baby and mother.

100% crop from the A900 at ISO1600. Though I could've gotten more pixel density out of the A55.

Regretfully, the lens in this carrying case could not make it to the gathering.

Yes, the Sony 300mm F2.8 G SSM can fit in such a tiny box! Once the hood is positioned backwards it is pretty short.

user posted image
It focuses to a record close 2 meters and is 2.3 KG light.

In comparison, the Nikkor 300mm F2.8 AF-S VR II is 2.9 KG, and the Canon 300mm F2.8 L IS USM II is 2.4 KG (with the first version being 2.5 KG.)

2.3 KG is definitely handholdable though you may not prefer to do so for extended periods of time.

8tvt yeap...

for the orange photo issue, its normal, because u used such wide open aperture, huge iso, and slow shutter, the ambiance easily overwrite the flash, what u do is, gel ur flash, custom white balance it, then u get very nice 'natural' looking photo (depending on the WB level)

i'll take note if bump to that situation again..
maybe next time will focus on optimizing the flash..

for the current setup.. 18mm @F3.5 and F42, what are the ISO and shutter suitable for it?
so i can be more focus on flash, metering and also the WB..

of course you don't just use an orange flash gel and fire away.

you need to manually set your WB to match the flash output as well.

for technical explanations i pass it back to ieR. laugh.gif

if use orange colour gel.. won't make it more orangey?
i'll take note if bump to that situation again..
maybe next time will focus on optimizing the flash..

for the current setup.. 18mm @F3.5 and F42, what are the ISO and shutter suitable for it?
so i can be more focus on flash, metering and also the WB..
*
use orange gel, to simulate the 'ambiance' lighting stronger<key point), with WB, turn the kelvin down to ur liking (really low kelvin pure white, just low kelvin (3500-3200) to have some tungsten feel back to the photo)

it is very subjective, depending how daring u will use up to iso3200 and above. i use my A300 to iso1600 very often. i'll make sure my composition is so good that they first thing they see, is the picture, not the noise. but i will still get some comment on noise however lol.

learn how to use the most basic 'eV triangle' and learn how each other compliment each other, and how to compasate for each other. flash never (NEVER) directly affect the basic ambiance eV. flash is to control ForeGround eV (subject eV) only.

so u wan bright BG, set the camera not the flash, ur flash will deal with the subject (auto)

chiahau: It's not mine LOL.

cassplayer: Nope - you match your flash color with the ambient light which is usually orangey.

There is one place where you can put a blue gel or rather, blue filter - on the lens, so that you don't need to change to tungsten WB. However this will cause some light loss.

porkchop: iPhone users, do not be alarmed! biggrin.gif

d_lai_309: On the contrary - you can see sensor stabilization on the A33/A55, and in-lens stabilization on E-mount Optical SteadyShot (OSS) lenses e.g. Sony E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS and Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Active OSS.

Main reason why I started on the Alpha 100 was because I wanted a stabilized F1.4 for street shots in every condition.

Sonnar T* is full of win. biggrin.gif If you do a lot of street photography you might like the 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM and 85mm F1.4 ZA's perspective. I shoot concerts and gigs so I got a Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA.

d_lai_309: Sonnar usually means bright.

There are 6 Sony Carl Zeiss ZA lenses:

1) Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 DT ZA - for APS-C bodies, not recommended for full-frame. The other lenses are all full-frame lenses.
2) Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM
3) Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM
4) Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM
5) Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA
6) Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA

yup, sadly those arent important because the second u press the shutter, the ovf blanks out u cant see the anti shake crap anyway.

best of all, u cant find IS/VR 20/24/28/35/50/85/135 in the market. for sony, all is stabilized. total pwanage.

Added on February 2, 2011, 1:24 amalso, i rather see the shake in the OVF then NON, because i will know that my hand is shaking at MINIMUM before i release the shutter, knowing, my SSS dont have to over compensate the shake, if i were to see a non shake IS/VR on working, our mind will toy with us by "letting" our hand to move more. what's the point? (the reason for auto sensing IS/VR when mounted on tripod will auto disable/off the IS/VR.. so its still pointless to mount tripod and ur IS is disable? WTF)
