Nikon n Canon lens needs adapter to A-mount, if u can find it...
All brands lens comes with different mount...A-mount, F-mount, EF-mount, K-mount...sony using A-mount..

different brand using different mount,
for sony we are using A-mount,

all meant for A-mount.. including minolta, sony..
tamron, sigma, tokina etc.. make sure they are using A-mount, coz they are also came with other mount type..

All actually. But I think the a33/55 has problems detecting older lenses. Not sure though.

canon, nikon, sony, pentax & olympus all have their own mount design. a "mount" is the connecting portion between your lens & your camera body.

so basically a lens designed for the canon mount will only fit canon's cameras and not the rest of the brands. the same goes for nikon, pentax & olympus. sony is a bit more peculiar because it originates from a company called MINOLTA. hence sony cameras will accept lenses made by sony AND minolta (as long as it is a minolta AF lens). these are what we called manufacturer's lenses (i.e. canon lens for canon body, etc.). there are companies which makes lenses for different camera brands. these are called THIRD PARTY LENS manufacturer. example companies that does this are SIGMA, TAMRON & TOKINA. they will design a lens and make it available for different cameras. for example, TAMRON had produced a 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens and made it available in canon mount, nikon mount, sony mount & pentax mount. so if you are going to buy a tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens, make sure you tell the seller you want a SONY MOUNT TAMRON 70-200 F2.8 lens! there is no way to change the mount from nikon to sony (for example) in these lenses. they are built that way.
