The Boy Next Door (2015)

It actually started out decent. Premise was good, and the first act worked.

In the spirit of Fatal Attraction (1987)/The Hands That Rock The Cradle (1992) (eg. thriller)

And then something strange happened...

Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman) had to portray a "villain"...

I don't think his acting skills is there yet....

The script after the first act, was not very sure how to deliver!?!...

And that is not the good sign.

So much so that when the end credits roll, you go, meh....

Also interesting that Kristin Chenoweth took such a small role.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)

Let's cut through the chase, this is not a fantastic movie.

There really isn't much here that the last two installments have not done.

To top it off the reason for the movie is so weak and pointless....

Shame on you Ben Stiller, for doing this...

Also shame on Ben Kingsley for being part of this...

It was also difficult to see Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney and know this movie is their last.

R.I.P. guys.

Mortdecai (2015)

Can you try to write a clever/charming/delightful script and end up with the opposite?

The answer is yes, yes you can.

Here is a fine example, Mortdecai (2015)! It is so clever, that is is stupid, unfunny and another waste of production fund...

It is uninspired work by Johnny Depp trying his best to out Mr Bean, Mr Bean... Tedious, really...

Paul Bettany, for some odd reason tried to channel Jason Statham.

Ewan McGregor & Gwyneth Paltrow roles are superfluous...

The result, this USD 60 million movie, only made USD 7,605,668 in the States...

Sometimes, numbers do not lie.

My Two Sen.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
..
Oh, for the important stuff, after the initial end credits, there is a mini movie, and after the end of ALL the end credits, NOTHING!!!
..
Of there are some spooky scenes in this movie (scaring then alot of horror movies...)
..
Here is a thought, Joss Whedon direct a horror movie!!
..
Joss Whedon did announced that there'll be no post-credit scene, just mid-credit ... so that fans won't be left furious after waiting for maybe 10mins+

Who knows he'll direct a sequel to Cabin in the Wood, instead of just producing it with his pal Drew Goddard. hmm.gif

To be honest, I was underwhelmed a bit ... although the production scale of the movie is kinda bigger with globe trotting 'adventures', story-wise it's more personal, more 'down' to earth and no alien invaders this time ...

... The movie almost could be made as Iron Man 4, but since they need to 'get-rid' of the Ultron storyline before continuing to Thanos & the Infinity Gauntlets storyline, I guess it had to be one of The Avengers movie (since in the comic, the original Ant-Man, one of founding members of The Avengers, was the creator of Ultron; here it's Tony Stark).

Btw, how's the 3D effect for AoU? Many popping effects? Or just mostly perspective / layers effects? I only watched the 2D version in cinema.

The 3D effect was good in the first part of the movie and also during the Hulk Buster sequence, otherwise, not much difference.

Mainly perspective/layers effect. Although Hawkeye arrows effects were good.

Hope this helps

Montage of a heck - An intimate look at Kurt Corbain

Caught this on my HBO Go subscription, a rather impressive reconstruction of Kurt Corbain's life from personal archival materials. It does not go into exposé of his suicide, but more about shedding light to the real Kurt Corbain. Under the skin of a rock icon, he is your social outcast who had traumatic upbringing. Moving from one home to another while the parents move on to other priorities in life. He does exhibit your cliche troubled kid who thinks only in one direction and to a degree narrow view in life. The genius bits of the documentary are animating the hand scribbles/drawings of his notepads to breathe life to this virtual autobiography. You get a personal look at how his mind work as a musician and the constant struggle with the fame he garnered. Novoselic succintly sums up he dealt with the out of hand fame with alcohol, but unfortunately Kurt's escape is through drugs. Pretty insightful stuff.

Avengers : Age of Ultron

Joss Whedon has done it again. He has once again took the Marvel superheroes team Avengers and crafted a good story around it. To borrow a line from the movie itself, "It feels terribly balanced", and I could not have said it better.

The movie starts off some time after the events of Capt. America: The Winter Soldier. SHEILD is officially no more and Tony Stark now houses the team and they are officially known as the Avengers to the world. We are introduced to two new characters in the Maximoff twins, Peter and Wanda. Working for Hydra in the beginning, Wanda who has the ability to manipulate people's thoughts, literally got into the minds of the Avengers. Using her unique ability, she brings forth each of the member's worst fears. This in effect brings about the birth of Ultron, the movie's main antagonist.

Good guys versus bad guy. Typical storyline but what makes Age of Ultron interesting is the details that Whedon injects into each of the heroes that we see on screen. We get to know Clint Barton better instead of Hawkeye, the crack shot with a bow and arrow. He tells the tale of Natasha Romanov before she joins SHIELD. He brings forth Bruce Banner, the man rather than emphasizing on the Hulk. It makes for a very different angle in a movie that is clearly action oriented.

Speaking of action, there are enough action scenes in this one to satisfy any action movie fans. The special effects are top notch but I find that sometimes the actions get too fast. Whedon also has a knack to do away with lengthy exposition in the movie with a few well placed dialogue or shots and plenty of foreshadowing as the movie progresses. This helps in getting the pacing of the movie right. Coming in at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Age of Ultron cannot be labelled a short movie but you don't feel it. That's saying plenty especially when compared to recent over-hyped science fiction flick that can lull you to sleep.

In order to get the full impact of this movie, you will need to have seen all the other Marvel super hero movies namely both the Capt. America movies, all the Iron Man sequels, both Thor movies and to a lesser extent, Guardians of the Galaxy, apart from the first Avengers movie. I would recommend that one at least go through the Capt. America movies and the first Avengers.

Will this Avengers movie win any Oscars? I doubt it but I would highly recommend it and doubly so if you are a fan of Marvel super heroes flicks.

Ultron is No.1 the worst movie I've seen in the entire 2015.

As much as I want it to be good, I walked out disappointed and I couldn't believe it.

After all Avengers 1 was really fun.

How an established director direct this crappy movie?

Probably he has not enough final control over his own film.

Glad he's out.... now he needs to direct another movie for redemption!

Ultron leaves a bad taste in my mouth, thankfully there's Helios, DBZ, & Infini to be my Listerine!

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Okay, I stealing a phrase from Ron Weasley by saying, THIS MOVIE IS MENTAL!!!!!!

I actually did not want to go see this.

I am NOT a fan of the original movie series.

Why?

It is just so... BLEAK!!!!

And By Jove, BLEAK it is...

Filming took place in Namib Desert, Namibia and Australia, so from a scenic point of view, it is breathtaking (believe it or not, it is difficult to make the desert look nice. You either have to film very early in the morning, or as the sun sets. Filming at noon, the desert look flat.) So needless to say it was probably tough making this movie.

Another trend is, the movie looks like it was film practical. (with several exceptions) which adds to it.

Charlize Theron is supposed to be one of the highly paid actors at this point in time and I feel, the success of this movie is partly due to her ability to sell her role.

As for her counterpart... Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky, is a little... subdue...

After his bigger then life role Bane, it took a little while to get use to.

For the Monster Truck derby fans out there (whom I assume is the target audience for this movie). The pure vehicle carnage in this movie, with send even the most jaded amongst you to roller derby heaven...

So, did I like the movie...

I am of two minds.

On one hand, as a movie, I respect how much effort it must have took to get the movie done. The filmmakers dedication to the movie literally bleeds out of the movie.

On the other, it really is not my cup of tea (Fast and Furious anyone)

I will give this it, it is pure and unadulterated chaos... And there are people who would truly appreciate this.

Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)

Pitch Perfect (2012) was a sleeper hit.

It costed USD 17,000,000 to produced and made USD 64,998,368 in US alone.

Anna Kendrick was also launched into a star!

So, Universal having NO big franchise, decided to make it into a franchise!!

In 2012 with the general public salivating mesh up with Glee's popularity, it really isn't much of a wonder that the first movie made alot of money world wide!

Now, Glee has ended. Fox just announced that they are retiring the American Idol competition, will the second movie fare as well?

Apparently, yes!

The movie started with

That's it, the whole script, and that is just the first 10 minutes, the whole plot and they sang they way through to the end!!!

I KID YOU NOT!!!

If Universal think that they can make 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and have a ready audience... Well, frankly, it is like watching a 1 and a half hour MTV...

There are good points, the show is "intelligent" enough to recognize that the whole world hates America, and competing on a world platform, American might not be great!

And that is about it.

They did not even attempt to invite the audience into supporting the Barden Bellas by familiarizing the different girls to the viewing public, just alot of suggestion the Fat Amy and Bumper Allen bump ugly behind everyones' back...

So in short, this is the last Pitch Perfect I would watch...

Thanks a lot for watching, Mov_freak! I really appreciate it. smile.gif
I didn’t have any expectation on the movie, which is why it didn’t bother me much. tongue.gif
Plus, even from the trailers itself, it was already emphasized on the Germans, so I figured there won’t be other national team involved, so, yeah.
I did read somewhere that there’s gonna be a 3rd one coming up. biggrin.gif
