The Chronicles of Merong Mahawangsa (2010)I rarely watch Malaysian movie period. The last Malaysian movie I had watched was $ellout. Something has to be said about the marketing for this movie, it had done enough to peak my interest.
I am pleasantly surprise.
Very surprise that with a budget of RM8,000,000 the amount production quality appearing on screen is staggering!!
Please do NOT compare this movie with USD100 Million movie. It is NOT a fair comparison. A more fair comparison would be to compare this with a high budget Thai or Singapore movie, and it does shine.
A word of caution, it is a pretty "bloody" (literally) movie. So might not be suitable for young'uns...
In short I found it entertaining, and from that point of view, it fares well.
For serious history buff, please note, if you don't pick it, you'll enjoy the movie better. (Actually, I did less history picking in this movie, compared to movies like The Mummy and Mummy Return!!)
And there as some blatant boo boos in the movie (please refer to spoiler)

The Roman Prince (Gavin Stenhouse) and Han Princess (Jing Lusi) were able to converse in "English". My initial reaction was, okay, they are doing what the TV Series Rome did. English here = Latin!! Then the Han Princess, being "too" clever said, I can speak Latin too... Carpe diem (seize the day) see, I can speak Latin. So, English in the movie really means English here... Fantastic, especial in 160AD, the modern English language does
NOT exist yet....
Merong Mahawangsa (Stephen Rahman Hughes) has the plans to building an Archimedes Heat/Death Ray. Using mirrors from the Han Princess's dowry!?! Very interesting seeing how glass mirror back with gold leaf existed only after 500AD. So the Han Princess was WAY ahead of her time!!

And mirror resembling what we use today, far
FAR later date!
Merong Mahawangs tried
TOO VERY hard to be Jack Sparrows... Stephen Rahman Hughes looks (mind you looks can be deceiving) too gentlemanly to be a good Jack Sparrow!!

The Roman Prince after being rescued by the Chinese Admiral (Craig Fong) (he was presumed to have been in the company of the Chinese Fleet) suddenly is all Kung Fu-e and very educated with the fighting style of the Filipino Kali Sticks!!!!!

There are alot of "homage" KRU did to Hollywood movies. Notably, 300. And have to add, Yusri did NOT over do it with the slow mo shot (I'm LOOKING AT YOU PANG BROTHERS!! [Storm Warriors])
There are certain scenes in the movie that is actually the throw back to old P Ramlee movies!! And
THAT is
NOT a bad thing!!
Impressive, IMPRESSIVE work KRU. More please?!
If you want a locally produce movie that is highly entertaining, here it is!!
My two Sen
