the O&G business is divided into 2 parts, Upstream side and Downstream side

I'm from Upstream so I may be more familiar with that side of the business.

Upstream side involves mainly the extraction of hydrocarbons from the subsurface and the supply of it from the platform to the Plant/Crude Carrier/LNG etc etc so anything that involves those items are called the Upstream side.

Refining, Petrochem, Sales and Service stations etc are the downstream side of the business.

Good morning guys.

My internship is going to end soon at end June. I am really looking forward to Oil and Gas field because of the bright prospect, not to mention the well paying salary as well. I am always not hesitate to learn and willing to start from the bottom in OnG line. I got a not bad result in Mech Degree but one thing that quite turns me off is my fluency of English speaking. If I am given a scale to rate myself from 1 to 5 I would rate myself as 3.0 the most in my English speaking. I can talk with the simple one but always stuck at some points due to lack of vocabs. So what do you guys think about this? Please share me one or two regarding this. I just made my mind that I am not going to apply big foreign MNC at the moment because most probably I could fail myself during interview sad.gif Read a few posts back and I found that some sifus said a Good command of English is a must. By the way now I am practicing verbal speaking daily hope that improvement can be achieved.

Yes, Petronas will give priority to their scholars BUT my question is have you even tried Petronas? If you have not tried because of the assumption that you will not get it due to the above ..... you need to get your attitude adjusted.

If you have tried and Petronas doesn't even call you for an interview ... well at least you have tried.

yup...just try it...hopefully they'll respond la...thanx for the advice anyway... smile.gif

Read a lot of books. Read, read, read. Go to Kino and buy some books. If you cannot afford Kino prices, go to those bookshops that sells used books.

Read read read ... you're never too old to read novels.

Depends on the degree you're holding. Engineering maybe difficult but Geosciences maybe okay.

Whatever it is, I always say that you should just send in your application/resume ... what have you got to lose? At least you have tried. It's a lot worse if you don't even try.

What I worry is the technical question that the interviewer gonna ask. But I am willing to strive and work hard for my first few years, not sure if those company are willing to train fresh graduates like me or not.

Hi Mr. Azraeil (please correct me if I have mistaken your gender status),

I have read quite a number of posts saying that drilling engineers are from the upstream. It is one of the highly specialized jobs.
But, how can a civil engineer (for example, me) can get into the field of drilling? Do I need specialization in geotechnical instead of structural or some other sub-disciplines? Or, any engineers can go for drilling as long as he/she got an offer for the post?

Thank you!!! smile.gif

Usually, or at least in petronas and its subsidiaries.... For fresh grads they seldom ask technical stuff, bcos those stuff you will learn on the job, as most of the time the job is specialized, for example if you go do comissioning, you have to learn the standard method used in the organization, paperworks, reporting and such...

What they usually do in interview is to see your confidence level and conversation skills....

During my time in one of petronas subs, the scenario that i get is i am a factory onwer, and some kind of pollution happens at the factory, i need to answer to reporter and the authority, the nterviewers. They will try to provoke and turn the facts around to see if you will budge.
The 2nd one is about newspaper that i usually read if i'm not mistaken...

for a start it does not matter, just keep trying. was in consultant construction 3 years plus before join o&g.

once you are into it, if u wanna climb the corp. ladder (manager/head of dept/etc), it is best with qualifications especially in mnc, unless that particular company unable to find the skills/experience it needs. so build ur qualifications & networking simultaneously side-by-side with your job.

Gender is correct.

Yes, Drilling Engineers are from the upstream. Most drilling engineers I know has a Petroleum Engineering background but some are from mechanical background as well.

Drilling engineers requires you to be at the site most of the time (but some do office work) and you need to know things about the casing system, cementing job, and reservoir pressure behaviors.

Most of the experience gained are on-the job type so maybe some other discipline may be able to join.
