There're 2 types of pickups, which are singlecoils (The ones with one layer of magnets) & humbuckers (2 rows of coils).
Of course, there're other types of pickups - the P90 (Singlecoil wired in a humbucker way)& hum-cancelling singlecoils (Humbucker in a singlecoil cover). |

This closeup shows three magnetic pickups on an electric guitar. From left to right they are a humbucker and two single coils. Usually an electric guitar has more than one magnetic pickup os there will be a combination of pickups is called a pickup configuration. To make life easy, they are usually notated by just writing out the pickup types, using "S" for single-coil and "H" for humbucker, in order from neck pickup to bridge pickup. Some pickup configurations are:
Less frequently used configurations are:

There's plenty of information comparing single-coils and humbuckers on the internet, including this forum, so try a search.
But seriously, there's not alot the members of the forum can do for you, because describing a sound through words is really hard. For example, if I told you that a single coil was bright and glassy, whereas a humbucker is dark and fat, would you really know what I mean? Your best bet: try a Fender Stratocaster (3 single coils) / Telecaster (2 single coils) and a Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul (2 humbuckers) - those are about as different as you can get. Same amp, same settings. Get someone else to try it for you if you're not confident that you can really get the tone from the guitar. Or another way is to find out what your favourite guitarists use. There's really no specific tone for each genre, although I would say the typical jazz tone (Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern) is dark and bassy.

and surf rock (beach boys) is rather bright and twangy.
for punk/british rock, you have both schools : bright agressive tone (strat) or dark thick tone (SG) hehe sorry to be a sad lad, but it's not really the right place to talk about that, is it ? |

Remember, you would also need an amplifier for an electric guitar..... so 500 bucks wouldn't get you that far........
Maybe if you can save an extra 500 bucks, you MIGHT be able to get a decent setup |

i got a friend who has a studio somewhere at his backyard. therefore, i could always take a trip down to his place to have a jamming session.
all i need is a guitar of my own, cos' i might damage his and can't afford to pay back. well, it's all a start-up. anything less than 500 bucks? maybe u guys can recommend me. oh btw, i read the papers few days back. i saw an ad of yamaha having a sale in its subang parade branch. is yamaha e.guitar any good? |

If you can, save up for the Yamaha Pacifica 112. It's around RM700+ but it's worth it. The feel of the guitar is amazing for the price and when set up properly, it puts cheap copies by SX, Squier etc to shame. Plus, it's pretty light, won't give you any backaches lol.
