I think she's looking for just a guitar, because apparently she can use the friend's studio.
But Kimberly, what we're trying to say is that, for ANY guitar that costs below 500 bucks, ISN'T going to sound THAT great. If you just can wait and put in just a few hundred more, you can get a MUCH better sounding guitar.

i beg to differ...for the few Sx's owners around here...including me.

agreed with nick and wld definitely can vouch for his statement. i'm a proud owner of an SX and that guitar cld simply pwned my samick (before swapping with EMGs) which is nearly doubled the SX price. a friend of mine had tested it and agreed it is on par if not better with his epi custom lp which has the RM3k+ pricetag.
and just to quote what bassraptor's post which is self-explainable...

I've come across American and Mexican basses that suck too, and you're paying loads more money for them. You'd be surprised at how much better value for money SX basses are compared to some Mexican Fenders ... you take any SX copy - Jazz or P or Strat or Tele - and do it up properly ... on record, you can't tell the difference between an original and the copy ... so shed your inhibitions about China-made gear .... people used to condemn Japanese made cars and guitars 40 years ago, and you're merely recycling that prejudice ... in fact, I've played some Indonesian and China-made guitars and basses that'll make you cry with longing.
As for jumbo frets and tone - look, it's all in the way you play - a crappy player can make the best of basses sound lousy, and a great player will make the cheapest bass sound cool ... heard it many times before ... if you worry about every little thing like fret size and string type, you're never going to get your tone ...
