if baby cries...there are other reasons besides hungry. last time..i just shove my boobs into my son's mouth..usually he would keep quiet.

Your wife's milk will only come in after a few days....so for the first day when your child is delivered, there will be colustrum which is very very nutritious.

Remember that a newborn's stomach is a size of a pea..so you only need that much of milk to fill but frequently.

SUPPLY=DEMAND (This is the formula to help increase supply). However..there are times that supply does not build up as fast as your baby's needs..so usually try opting other ways to increase such as fenugreek/ oats/barley.

another thing that may affect is your baby's latching..if it's latch incorrectly..your baby is not draining the milk. go to kellymom.com..to see photos of how correct latch is.

Hi! Has anyone here transport their milk before when travelling abroad? I will be away for 4 days.

I plan to pump and bring back the milk for my princess. I will be bringing with me Medela pump, techni Ice, one very light cooler bag from Daiso, one box of Autumn milk storage bag. I am planning to frozen my milk in Autumn bag and wrap with techni Ice and wrap another layer of newspaper and put in the cooler bag and hand carry with me. But I am not sure if it can stands for 12 hours.
I don't produce much. One day around 18-20oz (4 pks) so in total should be around 12-14pks.

Now I am very worry if it melts. Anyone has any guide?

Sorry Snowee...I've not done it..however, you can try to post your query on the FB's Breastfeeding Advocates Network Group
http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/128537811172/

There are some mommies over there who may have done so.

Hi Snowee,

I haven't travelled with my EBM, but I do keep it for around 14hrs during day time. I leave my house to work around 7pm and come back by 8pm.

Still my EBM stays fresh. I use Stylo mama bag and 3 gel packs.

Of course I stay in Air con whole day in office so not so hot!

Your baby is taking too much nap during the day.. U have to slowly adjust her sleeping timing.

What i did was this. (I started when baby full moon)

8pm is her sleep time. Lights out totally. Change pyjamas. Rub tummy with oil. (A chinese way) change diapers.
If she wakes up, give her milk, change diapers, dont look into her eyes. Dont talk to her..don't switch the lights on. Pat her back to sleep.
Repeat for the rest of the night. If your wife is direct latching, get her to latch by lying sideways.

When morning comes, say 7am. Curtain open.. lights on.. music on..
Throughout the day, her nap is outside the room, not in her night baby cot. Lights on, curtain open, we talk loudly.. music on.. etc etc...

U can try and buy "the contented little baby book by Gina Ford". Very good book to put your baby on schedule.

My method above was more or less adapted from the book. This changing of schedule is not something that u can achieve in 2-3 days..
If ur wife is starting work soon, have u tried starting the botttle? Many bf babies have problem with transition from breast to bottle.

I have been a silent reader and would now like to join the fun (if you guys don't mind) smile.gif

Today mark my 1st year of breastfeeding and i am very proud for doing it this far smile.gif
It involves a lot of hard work and commitment (aka become slave of breast pump) but it is do-able and is definitely a rewarding experience.

I am planning to continue until he is 2 years old unless if he weans himself off earlier.

Anyway, just would like to introduce myself here smile.gif

Thank mommy 2011. After i read the advices fr the brsfeeding advocate in FB I decided not to take risk eventhough TSA regulation allows to handcarry ebm but certain airport like China is not easy to pass thru the chkpoint. I just borrowed a coleman ice box and some ice bricks fr a friend and will chk in my ebm.

I have travelled with frozen EBM before.

In my last trip, i brought around 15 litre of EBM. It is quite a significant amount and very heavy! I put them in an esky and put some dry ice in it.
And yes, you can check in the frozen breast milk, provided the baggage (package) permits the release of carbon dioxide gas (dry ice)

Each item of checked baggage must be marked “dry ice” or “carbon dioxide, solid” and with the net weight of dry ice or an indication that there is 2.5 kg or less dry ice.

The weight of the box & milk is counted towards your baggage allowance

The dry ice can last around 12 hours and there was no problem smile.gif

Morning all

I try to read all posts n gather info frm page 1 ( which I still haven't finish reading)
Tht BM actually can be stored?
I mean.I should go and buy the storage device and maybe the special bag and maybe heat pack or cold pack?

This items can be found in jusco, parkson or I need to source them in some parenthood outlet?

Many thanks for answering my noob question.

Cheers

nugget, i think u can only find them in baby or nursing shop. u can try tiny tapir, fabulous mom, autumnz, lunatots, mom little ones, etc. or online. or u can use those small glass bottle like brands chicken essence. glass bottles r definately safer than plastic bottles. storage by means bpa free bottles n that ziplock plastic (my brain hasn't wake up so i forgot wat they called). in the fridge they can last abt 48hrs, freezer abt 2-3mths n deep freezer can last even longer. oh n if ur milk is near expired or oversupply n u dunno wat to do wif them, dun throw away! u can make it into yogurt, bake into cake, soap, bath the baby, etc. n if u feel generous n iversupply u can always donate it out to other needy mama or post it on human milk 4 human babies malaysia on facebook. we mamas r incredible! smile.gif

Hi all again

My wife had labored pre-due date on 36 weeks.
Both baby n mummy are safe now.
But baby weight is very light @ 1.65kg.
So need to stay in hospital.( we were caught off guarded)cause everything were prepared back in hometown, kdh.but here it is!! He wanna bcome a johorean...gosh..u should look at my face when I drove her o the hospital..for instance I don't know which way Togo...

Izzit safe to bring my wife to bf in de hospital? U know with Chinese(d most pantang law in the history) which says should not moves during early confiment...

Also I had bought a fishing ice box instead of those keep cool box frm d nursing shop..cause more durable n cheaper. I never buy the cool pack too Bt swivth to the icebox re-useable ice.more solid, cheaper and will last longer...

Need to go hospital now..catch with u guys later...

Cheers

congrats nugget! welcome to parenthood! which hospital did u go? if gov hospital they should bring the baby for bf once they've cleaned the baby. if private they may not informed or asked u whether u wanna bf or not n may have already give ur baby formula. i went to hospital sultan ismail n was already starting to bf on my nite stay. but this is just the beginning of the bf journey. u'll need lots of determination n persistant to continue. give ur wife lots of support n help her fend off all "no milk" or "give formula so ur wife can rest" remark. ur wife can rest well too if the baby is co sleeping wif her. she can bf the baby by lying sideway. all n all it's up to u as a parent's decision to bf or give wat u think is the best for ur baby, not san gu liu po, in laws, ur parents, confinement lady, frens, etc. the baby is YOURS not theirs. again, congrats n i hope to congrat u again when ur wife's bf journey reached one mth.

hey nugg...congratz...

from my experience...due to my baby ops of myelomeningocele...we stay 2 weeks in hospital...we see a lots of pre-matured baby cases...my advise to u is...for the time being the baby will be at the hospital until his weight is stable which is im not sure depends on hospital n docs...around 2.5kg-2.8kg...maybe...so let the mom hav a gud-gud rest...normal or c-sect...its still tiring n in confinemennt stages...as for now...the baby will be feeded by tube if he still dont know how to suck the milk from the syringe or bf...when the baby is ready...the nurse will let u know...then the mum is needed there...to bf him...maybe if there is bed available...ur wife can stay there to monitor ur baby when the feed time every 3 hour...as for the 'pantang larang'...lets the expert here spell it for u...hehe...

like nicKit said...support ur wife...she'll need it the most...seems like u already prepared the kit for transport the pumped milk...i assume the mum is resting at home...keep the milk coming...pump every 3 hours...simpan stock...at hospital they feed the baby every 3 hour...if the mum milk is not enuf...they will used the formula...dont waste the yellowish collostrum milk...the first milk produced by mum...u guys be strong...hopefully no jaundice(kuning)...

CONGRATZZZ

Thanks guys

Baby is doing fine as now. No tube no nothing.
D problem with gov hospital is they will ask u to discharge on the 2nd day.Bt bb still in n.I.c.u
so for now.v are doing our best to bf the baby.
Heart pain to c my wife had to go all the way to downtown jb (HSA) to bf... Just three days after labored...

1st attempt of bf : he is sleeping..so with no guidance frm the nurse..my wife took almost an hour trying to bf him...with no result offcourse..Coz v donno must wake d baby b4 bf...Wahahaha

2nd attempt : with abit result...hope he can get snuff colostrum

Today : finally with the request frm nug..a nurse help n teach ma wife rgd bf'ing..but baby very lazy..suck abit then stop..maybe not et hungry.

Again bout half an hour later : this time he seems to understand tht he need to cooperate..Not bad,as my wfe says.

We ha to give up cause dark clouds and starting to rain sign appears.so go home.

Well, gov hos is like tht..they lack of extra mile service.
It is not fair to blame them..cause I know they have only two hands and lot of baby to take care.

Hoping for the best. Cause the doctor says : should b alrite to go home soon.

AND finally I had my breakfast in Mamak stall now..

Cheers

Nug
