Moses, if you want you can flash us (cf. pinned thread) with your gear... I'm dumb when it comes to names, brands and gear of drums, but I love it and i have plenty of respect for drummers. They are the Pillars of the Groove.

headhunter7, double pedal. thats the drum set for my band practice. its a pearl. the one in my room isnt that good but more than enough for room practice on my own. the one in my room is a tama, 2 cymbals (paiste 402 series), 1 ride, hi hat, yamaha dd-55 electric drum set next to it for extra sounds and effects.
pizzaboy, yes i am from jamtank too. cymbals are 101 and 402plus This post has been edited by echobrainproject: May 31 2005, 09:02 PM |

i enjoy drumming.... even though i didnt actually played in a real drum machine.... just the video game percussion freak by konami... hehe...
but seriously... i really like to play and like to learn more about drums..... sometimes... when i listen to songs... like hardcore rock... or soft rock.... i just close my eyes.... and try to imagine how the beats are going... and then my hands move on their own.... drumming in thin air... hehe.... in my opinion drummers are the backbone of the music.... no beat.... no fun....!!! |

Then I wonder why Tama bothers to trademark or call their tuning key "unique", looks like a standard allen key to me

Sorry for late reply.Should be all the drums got 5 nuts, I just tune all the 5 nutes with the same tightness. That's simple. Another thing, not too tight, not too loose... |

go and read up on moses's tips.
and read drumbum.com, the tuning tips section. nobody here except, moses can give you good enough answers. Ain't pro enough. I learnt a good amount from moses too. Doing my single-strokes awful fine now. Yeehaw baybee! Now i'm wonderin how the F do you play mister brightside. Yah know, the part where he masuk that time. IT's like single-strokes rollin on the snare, and hit the HH. At first, it's like the second count, then after that it gets faster and faster and faster and then I go kabloomey, cannot keep up. Amacam laaaa....... |

hey!
how can you guys miss out Neil Peart? Longineu parsons is awesome too! He's accurate as hell! and ddude, hey they play alright. Just they play extremely fast. If you play fast, you'll notice you'll play harder If you make it softer, you'll usually play slower (need practice to maintain sound/speed) but just listen to drummers like Travis barker and Joey Jordison. They drum faster than you can blink, but they can still control their sound. Example, "Down" blink 182 This post has been edited by pizzaboy: Jul 16 2005, 09:07 PM |

not only is it really hard, it's almost like....cannot be done.
The faster you play, the harder you will play. It's too difficult to do anything about it. You can keep practicing and practicing and yea you'll get better. But there's still a limit where you'll play louder. |

ah the omnipresent heel-toe question...
I say do whats most comfortable to you. I personally DP in the heel-up position, with my toes closer to the mid-bottom portion of the pedals. I also leave the beater on the drumhead after each stroke. Here's a good tip that I picked up: Practice the same strokes that you would practice on your hands! Yes, that means paradiddles and the like. Remember to start slow! |

Hello, I am also a drummer and drumming is one of my greatest hobby next to mobile phones!
I attend class and play according to notes. Currently I am on ROCK-FUNK stage and that is cool! Today I play will electronic drums in the drumming class(They changed it). Last time I used to play with accoustic drums(But it was removed). I prefer accoustic drum sets for their "Stick rebounce" effects and electronic drum sets for their wide range of selectable sounds! I can get fairly accurate ride cymbal sounds on the electronic drumset. |

hi guys..
im new here, but not new to drums been playing for abt 10 yrs, but still not so 'chun' la... using a rockstar custom with sabian HHX 13" groove hats, 13" El Sabor splash, 8" paragon splash, zildjian 15" K custom fast crash, 20" K custom dark ride.. i hardly play anymore since im pretty busy with other stuff.. i used to take lessons from john thomas..but only for like 3 months..very expensive le... i listen to rock..but like playing funk..no DP for me tq... to play fast and soft is not as hard as u think.. just use ur fingers...not ur arms..wrists for accents.. when u think its hard..its hard..even if it actually isnt.. my fave drummers: dave weckl, dennis chambers, marco minneman, carter beauford, danny carey, josh freese...blablabla as for tuning, i suck at it!.. takes me a whole week to tune ONE FLOOR TOM... ok.. keep this thread alive...i just found it! |

I play with my fingers and wrists.
Usually I used both my wrists and fingers in my drumming school since it lets me play more dynamically on the electronic drumset. I guess it will be easier for me to use my fingers alone on an accoustic piece. For example, it will be easier and nicer to ride a real "ride cymbal" with just my fingers than the one on the electronic set which has little bounce effect but really superd sound quality. I miss the real cymbals and snare drum on the accoustic set! Rim shots are not possible on an electronic snare drum and riding the bell of a "Ride cymbal" is also not possible on electronic cymbals. The advantages I had are selectable sounds though... Enjoy drumming! "Sitting in - rock; FUNK STYLE: 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4..." |

Hi TheWhacker, I do not have a drumset.
If I get my set, I will be planning to perchase a high quality ride cymbal I will also get plastic tiped sticks for the effect it creates on the ride My current sticks are high quality ones that are dark brown in color. Very hard and light(No mentioned of size code though like 5B, 5A etc...) I saw one highly refined ride in my music school for RM 1000+ I may be planning for that one!:P This post has been edited by Benjamin_8888i: Aug 23 2005, 08:18 PM |

And....hmmm,if you actually think about it,its easier to play fast and soft, rather than fast and loud simply because, to play fast...you need to get your strokes in quickly and playing softly, you don't have to move your drumsticks as much.
So it its much easier to play soft and fast. Of course its harder to get to that level of control required.....but yeah. |

Good one
Currently just passed my triplets. It was certainly fun and tough!! I always accent my beats expecially on beats 1, 2, 3, and 4... on rock drumming patterns. I also snap the hi-hat on the prominant beats 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. As for the snare drum, I usually add drags to the main notes. For the base drum, I always make sure I punch it hard! I practice with a metronome |

Haha its good to pay close attention to the quarter note pulse, and praticing with a metronome is great...however,for the bass drum, you may want to exercise more restraint when playing it,instead of hitting it real hard all the time....so that you leave room for accenting...& its not as tiring.lol.
Triplets are great, try different combinations between hands and feet....haha you can get some pretty cool stuff to incoporate into your grooves and fills. |

True, prolonged usage of the base drum padal makes my right foot ache!
I also play steady triplets on the ride cymbal for some pattern styles. I need to try practicing triplets on the ride with a pattern and then switch to eights and then back to triplets again (maintaining timing). I like my drumming school's electronic drumset But I actually prefer an acoustic set. |

Hehe....hmmm where do you go to study? Mahogany?
You could do well with.....16th notes on the bass drum,if you've double pedals,or else 8ths with a single as a ostinato. Then playing contrasting patterns with your hands. Going from a usual rock groove, to a half time groove, or a triplet feel, or a halftime triplet feel....stuff like that. Check out mike portnoy's "progressive drum concepts" for more info. Hi, I learn drums in Harmony Music at Damansara Utama
I am used to playing doted rhythms and sixteens on a single pedal base. I also play triplets on the base drum. Currently my school wants to add a splash, cool! I recomment then for a 2.0' ride since the current one is more like a crash at 18'. It is cool learning drums! |

nice setup shannon103! nice to see some HHX..
what type of music will u guys be playing? anyway, i think that all the coordination will come after time and practice with ur bandmates.. its not something you can be taught... all you can do is keep timing.. hey, how about we post up music clips of our drumming? just for fun! ciao! |

I just passed my FUNK 1 exam...mann, it was tough!!
Now it is FUNK 2 with sixteens on the high hat. I noticed that FUNK patterned fills are rather complicated with all those flams, dotted rhymes,...and requires a lot of practice. Recently I tried rim shots(On a steady rock pattern) at my school accoustic drum set snare piece and it was really loud until the supervisor has to stop me!! Somehow there is not much time to figure out a nice unique fill when you are playing for a band other than just incooperating eight or sixteens notes on the snares or toms. You just have to choose an appropriate pattern and maintain the timing. I really marvel at those drummers who can think out a nice unique patterned fill in the mist of drumming. (Something I still need to learn). Happy drumming everybody! This post has been edited by Benjamin_8888i: Nov 9 2005, 06:55 PM |

Actually......Ben, thats what practice is for,
The idea is to gain the facility to do whatever you want (fills included), to be able to play whatever you hear in your mind. Trying all the fills and grooves in the practice room and working on limb independance enables you to pull it out without much effort and thought, as that was done during practice.Running through the parts mentally before playing them makes a difference.Being able to sing your parts out also makes a difference, as that means that you are able to visuallise what you want to do and have it "programmed" in your mind right. Of course there are times when you come up with stuff on the spot, maybe during free jams or of that sort.....but mostly, you should have run though stuff during practice, unless you're sure you won't mess up. Don't forget, you can fill in with cymbals too. This post has been edited by Shannon103: Nov 10 2005, 02:07 PM |

I can perform a crazy and super fast solo.
I will start on the high hat and start hitting it real fast(Even faster than a sixteen triplet). I will then proceed to the snare, to the toms, floor tom and then mix everything up. It is great and fun!! Lastly I will proceed to the crash cymbal and ride cymbal to create loud noises! But remember to always continue your strokes and don't stop at all as you shift around or else it won't sound so smooth. Another fun method is to play a steady patterned and then suddenly go crazy by hitting all the drum pieces and cymbals really fast as if you have suddenly gone mad!!!:D:D I can really scare people!:p There was once I went to my drum class early; The teacher wasn't there yet. I started playing a steady pattern for a time and then decided to get into a solo work. I started hitting the snare drum really fast and then proceed to the toms maintaining the stroking speed. Suddenly the teacher came in hehehe:D:D:D It was really funny because the teacher was a no nonsense type:P Lets share more. |

Wah, sounds complicated!!
Btw, recently I went to Yamaha Music in 1 Utama (New section) and discover that their drumming class there is big and nice. There are about 4 drumsets in there (All accoustic sets). I am learning in Harmony music (Location at D.U.). Now lessons are getting more and more complex and even my drum teacher is finding it confusing! I just passed "Shuffle" and it was cool!! (Only the Ghost notes are annoying but nice:D). Well well well, nothing much more except that I am now creating ROCK, HARDROCK, DISCO, REGGAE, FUNK, and SHUFFLE patterns and fills. |

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of changing my younger sister's drum instructor because he couldn't provide my sister with access to examinations. My location is at OUG, around Old Klang Road.. so can you guys recommend someone who is qualified to teach (at home or at a music studio) as well as providing my sister access to the examinations? cheers! |

Ahead drumstick are made of polyutherane and not wood. They're more durable and less painful on the hands after long time jamming. The tip is nylon and the back, has some kinda rubber or something that reduces the vibration.
They're heavy and expensive though. I think, about RM120 per pair. http://www.bigbangdist.com/ahead.htm <--the site. This post has been edited by pizzaboy: Jan 6 2006, 01:50 AM |

100-300 bucks? Thanks but NO thanks. I don't break that many sticks anyway. Been using 7A and 5A's for 4 years now, break 3-4 every year. At first, I broke like 1 every week, but now you live and learn. Don't chick the hi-hat with the side of the drumsticks unless necesarry. |

Do you teach? I've a friend studying i MMU CJ that needs a teacher. She's just starting though so temporarily I'll stick her with the good basics. Then i'll let her out to another teacher. |

Lets discuss how to make beatiful drum beats...
My tips is when you play a song.. On the beginning- Play very relax and slow Chorus- Start hitting it hard and start the feeling Bridge...-Try to add in fast and nice beat but please make sure you are same with the others, I mean the timing..and timing is very Important! End....-As usual hit the crash..16 |

Erh.....single-strokes?
Roll 4x on snare, and 4x on 1st tom and 4x on the 2nd tom annen another 4x on floor tom? Then between each drum piece, we hit bass once to fill the feel. That is it?? |

QUOTE(Mike3300 @ Jan 13 2006, 05:30 PM) Do they sound like drums or sound like plastic tincans?Nolah, I think I'll get a cheap acoustic set and put those silencer pads on them. I hope they don't kill the "feel" though. Of utmost importance man the feel. |

pizzaboy, I tell you do NOT! I say again do NOT get the DD-55 for a main drumset, it sounds alright but the pressure isn't variable, like a PS1 controller, the connection is either live or cut, no variables and I cant even roll a flam straight on it without having the cymbal pad being triggered
Too sensitive, too cranky and too stiff. |

Get an SX, freaking budget set but surprisingly still churns out some good sounds, coming in at around RM1100 for 5 piece set with a hihat and one cymbal, but if it's a ride or crash I'm not sure. Could be one of those Made In China "Crashides"

brand, model you will have to look lah, but I remember their models are addressed as numbers like ABC-001 like that so it's no use, I can never differenciate between their top of the range and beginner models unless I see the price

Yup, China brand like Lazer and Maxtone, when you go searching for the drum don't go banging on them and if it sounds wrong then immediately giving up on it, try to get a tuning key then play around with it and take it easy. Most of the drums (whatever brand for that matter) that are new and on display are almost always out of tune so we can never make the right judgement by just tapping on them for the first time.

Don't go daniels.
Try, City Music, Supersonic (Ask for Nick) Lazer is fine.. ICE uses Lazer If yuo wanna go with RM2.2K, Pearl Forums are the way to go. Get thru Woh Fatt. Or else, ask "Xuan Music" to get for you. The owner. Xuan is locted, opposite Senyum. |

I think stagg cymblas does not support. DD55 is good to be use in party or normal playing like free time..if wanna practise, go get acoustic set which is about RM4778 at my place ,Penang area...cheap thou..

The Pearl Export (EX) comes in this one brass white color variation, I think if your brother's cool with that better go with that one and use the extra money for some kickass cymbals or something as the EX is cheap, but got some real good value

As in, have passion for druming or just buy it for the sake of "try try and for fun only" If you're serious in drumming, i suggest you save like Rm5000 and get a good drum set. You won't regret getting them coz they sound way much different then those entry level drum sets which cost from Rm1500 and up. Drummer needs to get alot of stuff, the drums, the cymbals and drum hardwares like cymbal stands, snare holder etc etc and this musician is the most expensive of all musicians. So ask yourself, serious about it or for fun only ? |

Hello to all the drum taikos n sifus here. I'm kinda newbie, interested in drumming as a hobby (me working full time). Anyone who has an acouctic set and staying in apartment/condo? I'm planning to get one and these are the suggestions I got to not annoy the neighbors:
1. sound proof your room - Cheap solution, use egg trays, which looks like crap unless u willing to sacrifice a room. Then again, what if the drums are placed in the living room... 2. use dampening pads - does it totally kills the sound or softens it? is it cheap? 3. use hotrods instead of regular sticks - supposed to be between brush n regular sticks 4. digital drums (e.g. Roland v-drum, yamaha DTX, NOT DD55 kinda stuff!!) - can control volume but kinda expensive, lose the feel of an acoustic set. So, taikos n sifus, any advice on what should i do or get? Apologies if question is too general or not specific, cos i don't have enough knowledge or experience on drums. Thanks!! |

AFAIK, some (or most) apartment/condo management won't allow its owners certain things into the area ..... one example is pets. People staying in apartment/condo are not allowed to have pets coz they make noise and stuff like that. another one will be the Telescopes too are not allowed in some apartment/condos. drums are loud. the only way is to make a noise proof room. last time i checked it would cost over rm10,000 for renovations of a single room. not to mention you need a specialist to do it not just anyone.
i know its a problem here in kl as most of us cant afford a bungalow. the usual practice(or musicians here in kl i know) would rent shoplots in places where there arent many ppl around and u can really really make noise(especially at night since most of them will be working during the day). theres an alternative.... get a bandmate who has a large bungalow and put ur drums there and practice with him/her. hahaha. |

TheWhacker: well, house rules says that for musical instruments, noise must b kept at minimum level. |

yes it will reduce the loudness but not enough. low freq will still pass through.
dont get confused with acoustic foams, which are for room acoustics not sound insulation. |

QUOTE(TheWhacker @ Aug 24 2006, 11:13 AM) Are you into drums ? As in, have passion for druming or just buy it for the sake of "try try and for fun only" haha, good one, im still wondering. im serious, but not doing it for a living though. See, ive been playing like for nearly 5 or 6 years now. but still not that good. the only way i can advance is to buy my own set and have lots of practice. But than again, i cant afford 5k for drum. any suggestions? If you're serious in drumming, i suggest you save like Rm5000 and get a good drum set. So ask yourself, serious about it or for fun only ? |

well since its just for practice, u might not need up to rm5k. sure shells are important, but with very good skins and the right tuning, your drum can still sound awesome. money also should be spent on cymbals, for that, theres no cheaper way. u get what u pay for. lately the new zildjians arent that good. found out their quality dropped drastically over the years.if u're really on a tight budget u can go for staggs. they sound awesome. i know and heard of a few local drummers who drum professionally buying stagg cymbals.

well if u're gonna spend slowly(and know u have $$$ to spend) in stages then get something good(more higher end, preferrably not 2nd hand)...be patient and in the end of the day u dont have to sell anything off and have a nice good set.
what i was suggesting was if u had a budget and wanted to just buy once. however it would still sound good if u do that, just that u must know how to tune the drums well. the problem with 2nd hand drums are the hardware being worn out/rusty/etc. drums arent like guitars where 2nd hand ones are still ok or value increases. 2nd hand ones are just too troublesome. |

well, there is no specific 2nd hand item im currently looking at.
this can be one of it [WTS] Pearl Forum Drumset sadly, i cant find others. still waiting for a good buy, or still, if i have to spent a bit higher, im thinking of getting yamaha ryden series if im not mistaken. Its gonna cost me 2150. Tama swingstar will cost about 2130 and Pearl something, i cant remember will cost at 2660 but that is a bit far. But to get this, i must wait another few months. which one is the best? This post has been edited by Namqul: Sep 1 2006, 02:28 AM |

Hi all
I've read on the web regarding mufflers, silencers and mesh heads. i think they are all the same stuff (kindly correct me if i'm wrong), which are black round rubber pads that are placed on top on the acoustic drum heads. Quater circle shaped pads are placed on the cymbals and hi-hat. Would like to know whether the sound of the drums are reduced to an acceptable level or you'll hear just a thud from the sticks hitting the pads. Thanks! |

What do you call those rubber mats that you put on the drums and cymbals to reduce the noise? I am planning to get those, just that I dont know what it is called and how much will it be.

Nah my drumset.
![]() ![]() I'm studying in US now, of course I get all these nice stuff, they're cheaper too. DW Birch set, Iron Cobra pedals, high end Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. So lazy to give full specs. I play rock, metal and funk. I bring back some of my cymbals to KK, Sabah (that's where I'm from) to play in church and I sell them off before I leave. Recently, I just sold a Sabian AAXplosion 18" crash for RM450 before I left. That cymbal retails for like RM1000+ in stores. So if you guys need cymbals, book from me :-) I bring back new ones every time I go back. This post has been edited by Anson-: Sep 23 2006, 04:56 AM |

Hey, in case you didn't know.... we're going to have a musician's Gathering soon (the week before Raya) and all are invited......
one of the ideas tossed around is to rent a hall and bring our own gear.... Was wondering.... if anyone here wants to drag their drum kit along? If it's near their house and have a nearby LRT station..... please inform me! Thanks! |

avengers88, theres alot of drum video lessons online. among highly recommended vids are mike portnoy's progressive drum concept, liquid drum theater series, etc. I cant tell u where to dload them, but, im sure u know how to search for them.
besides that, listen(and if theres videos, watch) to as many music genre's and musicians u can get ur hands on. i have a 200GB external hdisk to my laptop just to store my music and it helps me alot in the creative process of coming up with ideas. and lucky u, there will be a drum clinic end of this month!!! check out today's star newspaper! I'm no drummer, but i think there is a trick that might work for drums as well.
When you count in your head, instead of counting 1--2--3--4, count in triplets: 1-2-3--2-2-3--3-2-3--4-2-3 ....etc and often the BD comes in on the 3rd count i think...can't cout properly Also it's all about developing independence. Jazz drumming is freaking hard. I thought of taking drums as a second instrument, but after trying to play jazz, forget it!! This post has been edited by Bassix: Oct 15 2006, 03:28 PM |

QUOTE([E]velyn @ Oct 15 2006, 04:47 PM) Noob here with some questions.. 1. thats a subjective question. depends how fast u learn, how much hours of practice u put into it.is it easy to learn drumming? whole set of NEW/2ND HAND drums are? does Yahama teach drumming? are they good? 2. depends on what drums(and hardware) u want, and the condition of it. 3. i think they do teach. depends who the teacher is, not the institution that determines whether its good or not. |

the drum clinic yesterday was good. it was a lot of fun seeing professional drummer strut his stuff. but he didn't really played anything mind-blowing or spectacular (except the jazz-buddy-rich-band thingy and the solo at the end) unlike dom famularo a few months back. but it's great nonetheless, his sense of timing is top notch, n his strokes are solid and steady. all in all, i had a great time. n just wondering, anybody else went to the clinic too yesterday?

QUOTE(Mike3300 @ Nov 3 2006, 11:50 AM) 7A is the thinnest and lightest of all drumsticks, suit's well for beginner. 7A's n the likes are for precission strokes, like jazz. for example, it's easier to play double stroke ghost notes. while 5A's n the likes are for powerful strokes, like rock. since it' heavier, it adds to the momentum.I prefer 5A cause it's thicker so I can grip it well. |

QUOTE(bluhapp @ Nov 8 2006, 10:58 PM) can i know much much for a beginner set.. the cheapest 5piece (3tom,snare,bass,hihat,splash ) costs.. and what brand should i buy ? can buy or not if budget RM900 only.. heeheh.. drummer looks very kewl.. hehe.. if u say 5 piece, it's actually just the snare, bass, and the small, medium and floor toms. that's a 5 piece set. hi-hat and splash aren't actually in it. and also, beginners don't usually choose or use splash cymbals. for cymbals, i think a pair of hi-hat, 2 crashes, and a ride would be good for strters.beginner's set.. it's about RM2,3++ for pearl forum series. that's the cheapest pearl i guess. n with free cymbals if i'm not mistakened. if your budget is 900, u can get one i guess. there's always a made in china ones. and there's also second hand drums. try n ask around. good luck |

QUOTE(squalluz @ Nov 9 2006, 02:44 AM) u can go to any music school n ask. i've never know of any music school that does not provide drum lessons. the fees is like RM80-90 per month for beginners. once a week, 30 minutes persession. that's the standard lesson i guess. coz i teach drum at a music school too. but i don't like 'give' drum lessons. i just teach for fun, as my part time job, hahaa.. RM80-90!! wow... crazy man.. i tink i will be giving lessons for basic drumming and pracically only after my STPM for only RM10 per lesson... |

then again, not all rm80-90 goes to the teacher i believe 50% goes to the school, so unless you're teaching full time it cant get better than your day job.

I'm using a pair of Vater 5A.
About the budget drumset, i recently saw a chinese made one which cost only RM 1300 full set, complete with 2 cymbals and hi-hats. The quality aren't so bad after all. And you can try www.drummerworld.com for all types of grooves and rudiments. |

Ok.... need some help from the drumming gurus here...
I have a female friend who is just starting to learn drums and she's looking for a Hello Kitty drumstick...... does anybody know: a) If there is such a drum stick (if not, I'll just "wrap" it myself) and b) what is a good drumstick for a beginner like that. Besides that, have not much information... thanks in advance. |

Yes, but unfortunately, we have around 13 people (and counting!) on our list, so a jam studio wouldn't be able to fit everyone.
The last time, it was very cramped with 10 of us. |

How about starting small first, say a 4- or 5-piece band, then learn up a song, then meet at some studio? Well, all I wanna do is just have some fun and 13 people is kinda hard to manage isn't it.

Well, that's the whole idea of a "gathering"..... this isn't band auditions.
All of us just want to get together, check out the gear, learn some tricks and just pick up and jam. Don't worry mate.... you'll fit right in. |

Sounds fun, but I'm more interested in the 'jamming' part. Alrighty then, I'll try to check the threads often.
Here's my lil intro: my name is Jay, 22 y.o. currently studying at SYUC and living in PJ. It's been years since I've seriously played an instrument but as far as musical education goes, I'm classically trained in violin, piano and guitar and I picked up electric guitar myself. I have no formal training in drums, though I have a drum kit at home. A long time ago I used to have a band and I played guitar back then. We've shared the stage with some local indie band like John's Mistress and a very early line-up of Dragon Red. I've no recordings of my drums but I have one of my guitar: http://ccl.webhour.biz/TK.mp3. For those who recognise the song, yes, I listen to Taiwanese girl bands |

QUOTE(squalluz @ Dec 2 2006, 03:05 AM) it's no problem. coz beginners need to work on their co-ordination first and foremost. so, electronic drumkit is no problem i guess. that is, if the price doesn't scare u in the first place I so eagerly to get acoustic drumkits but must muffler it since I stay in apartment, therefore kill the purpose of having it. But I heard that electric drum is for pro, as it is easier to play with and will be difficult as you move from electric to acoustic, let say, for a beginner. |

QUOTE(echobrainproject @ Aug 25 2006, 10:36 PM) well since its just for practice, u might not need up to rm5k. sure shells are important, but with very good skins and the right tuning, your drum can still sound awesome. money also should be spent on cymbals, for that, theres no cheaper way. u get what u pay for. lately the new zildjians arent that good. found out their quality dropped drastically over the years.if u're really on a tight budget u can go for staggs. they sound awesome. i know and heard of a few local drummers who drum professionally buying stagg cymbals. Staggs cymbals? how much do they cost? does it includes the hi-hat,crash and ride cymbals as well? my ori one that comes with the Pearl Forum series sound very pariah, the crash instead of making 'pishhhh' sound it goes 'tangggggg'. same goes to the hi-hat as well, sound not like 'chi chi chi chi' but 'chak chak chak'.Damn potong steam lah. any good and cheap one to recommend? |

usual cymbals, hi hats and rides that comes with the set are usually for practicing purposes only. i dont see the point as it actually discourages practice(and is a pain to listen to). lol.
staggs cymbals u can buy those in a set or individually. those in a set comes with hi hats, ride and a crash cymbal. there are low end sets to moderate quality sets which is around rm200+ to Rm400 i think. not too sure. have to ask JS music. i would recommend u getting them individually as u get to choose what kind of sound u want. prepare around rm200-rm300+ for each. if u're around jalan imbi just go to JS and try. they'll pass u drum sticks and let u smash the cymbals to test. not smth we can usually do in music stores in malaysia. |

All i know is PDP is like an export version of Pearl drums. They offer reasonable priced drums for its quality, not like its mother brand DW. THey also offer cool finishes, certainly a good buy. But i would rather go for DW if i was to keep the drums till for my grandchildren. Then again, my grandchildren might not play drums....

QUOTE(Namqul @ Dec 15 2006, 07:18 PM) what do you mean by like an export version of Pearl drums? and how is it if it is compared with other low end drumset like maxtone, superstar, premier or others which is below RM2k what i meant was, Pearl line of drums which are called export series. Dude PDP and Premier are way better than superstar, maxtone and other kits that cost under 2k. Even the entry level kit for PDP and Premier sounds better than the 'Kapok' sets. |

I could get a export series with cymbals and hardware for 2.6k. Check online web shops before buying anything. |

hmmm but when i asked around, especially in yamaha store, the salesguy said that the cheapest they could give for forum set is RM2,130. That is excluding stool, and cymbals. can this be considered as a good buy?

Yeah, when I was active with music a long time ago, it was easy to get tabs. Now, when I wanna start playing again, I've noticed a lot of sites giving that "sorry we can't provide tabs, pls click here to buy sheet music" crap. Anyway, I go to www.all-good-tabs.com.
And to answer the question about nylon and wooden tips, the difference is, one is a compromise on tone but improvement in durability (nylon) and the other (wooden) is the contrary. For practice, I use a pair of fully plastic (or plastic-like) sticks. They're heavier and helps with improving strength. Also, how long a pair lasts depends on how and how much you play. Generally, wooden drum sticks aren't made to last, so they shouldn't last long. EDIT: OK, that site I recommended up there doesn't work anymore. But these site work: http://metaltabs.com and http://www.hottesttabs.com. Quickly get the tabs before they remove it. This post has been edited by Party2DMax: Dec 29 2006, 10:48 PM |

Plastic sticks dont give you added weight. Mike Mangini sticks are by the the heaviest sticks in the wood market. Even some AHEAD sticks dont come close to the weight.

QUOTE(thalidomide @ Dec 30 2006, 11:45 AM) Of course there are exceptions to the rule but generally speaking, plastic, or more accurately, polymer, is far heavier than wood. Consider this: density of polyurethane (what my sticks are made of) is 1g/cc, while oak is only 0.6-0.9g/cc. Or so, the internet tells me. If you think 0.1g/cc (11%) is negligible, here's another thing: my sticks are hollow, yet they're still heavier than my wooden ones.Apart from the added weight, polymers also absorb more kinetic energy. In layman terms, that means they don't rebound as much as would a wooden stick after hitting something. I like to think of it as 'killing one bird with two stones'. The added weight (stone #1) and energy absorption (stone #2) definitely helps build up strength (the bird). P.S. AHEADs are hollow. |

I am not a scientist but yet, i've played plastic sticks and they feel a whole lot weird compared to wooden sticks. I switch sticks rather often so its not a matter of getting used to. I feel that knowing how to control a rebound is far better than not having it rebound after hitting something. Cause this allows you to vary the dynamics of your drums.

Definitely, I perform with wooden sticks, 'coz that they're the best by far. You talk about control, while I've been stressing that polymer sticks only helps build strength. That's two different things.

Then why not use marching band sticks? they're much much heavier and they're wood. Kill 2 birds with one stone again.

But practicing with sticks doesnt mean you'll be playing rigorously right?
I assume stength training would involve playing to rudiments and stick exercises. If you're talking about jam sessions then it would be a different story wouldnt it? For that i would recommend some simple weight exercise, or maybe some cardio. Practicing with plastic sticks wouldnt be too useful. |

Hmm, done the medicine balls before but it was for martial arts. It's very easy to master; I can do it with both hands in any direction simultaneously. I don't think that helps with improving strength for drumming. As for running, let's just say I've got that covered.
What other better exercises you got? |

Hmm, I don't know if is this have been discussed or not, but what do you think of PDP Drums?
As many know, PDP is the budget division of DW Drums. JS Music at Jln. Imbi offered good deals on PDP drumsets. The cheapest were 1.2k (after discount) which made my girlfriend went crazy over it since it's a full set entry-level drum. It's even cheaper than the cheapest Tama. Might getting it within 1-2 years. So what do you think? |

Hi everyone..I'm new here and i just noticed this thread..
me myself is a drummer too I've been playing for past 2 years.. the 1st gig i had it in Taylor's musical night back in 2006....band name was The Dawn(we changed it to something else due to there's a famous Philippines band call The Dawn as well) i have a Gretsch Black hawk Ex drum with simple 1 snare 2 tom 1 floor tom and 1 base including 14' Hi hat, 16' Crash and 18' Crash ride lousy headliner and a gilbratar single pedal(never think of going to double pedal since i can do double pedal sound with single pedal) any1 can tell me wat type of drumhead and cymbal should i get?i'm thinking for a change.. and i hardly can roll my drum from snare to floor tom..isit because i'm left handed?because when i switch the side and i roll from right to left it would be easier for me.. oh yea...nice to meet all drummers here |

hey there. welcome to the forum. was there watching u play at ur first gig. *cough*my fault the dawn missed soundcheck*couch*
i think the cymbals topic has already been mentioned in this thread. guess u have to start reading from page 1. haha. well, mention ur budget and the type of cymbal sound u r after. as for skins theres aquarians, evans and remo thats good. my personal preference is aquarians but then its all about what u want. do check out aquarians bass drum batter head(the one with the rings inside). |

im not sure about the price of aquarian skins since i got mine quite a while back.
sabian's and zildjian are both excellent cymbals. all comes down to the sound u want. however, alot of drummers agree quality of zildjians are going down over the years compared to good ones around the 90s. yes, its normal for drummers to bring their own snare drum to gigs. im not sure how ur gretsch sound, but i see picolo snare being quite famous to be brought along to gigs. some just use it as their main snare(replacing ones available at gigs) or some just use them as extra snare. |

QUOTE(anderson1188 @ Feb 10 2007, 05:45 PM) Those who have a budget constraint would go for cheap drumsets like Maxtone, Superstar (has a different name now), or even a Lazer drumset. I would recommend a Premier Olympic drumset. Woh Fatt sells them at about RM1,400 and I have to say that its quite a good drumkit for the price you pay. Although it's the lowest line of Premiers, it's a Premier afterall, right? Beware though; the tom holders aren't really good but if you spend some time tweaking it, you'll get the angle you like. I've got a friend who has the old Superstar kit and he couldn't get the angle that he wants for the toms. The Premier Olympic hi-hat pedal produces some sort of metal-to-metal noise when stepped, all due to the connector which connects the pedal and the clutch together. The connector is about half the size of a human thumb and it has 2 holes on each end. One of the holes are slightly much bigger than the thin, connecting shaft of the hi-hat pedal and that explains all the noise when the pedal is stepped. I suggest you get yourself a Gibraltar hi-hat stand to replace it. That's about it. Cheers |

Guys... Wats ur take for an e-kit? I recently thought of getting one, due to constraints of playing without pissing off neighbours..
I am currently eyeing on the lower range of Yamaha DTX series or the Roland one.. How much does the price range goes..did not have time to check them out in stores. Any suggestion of other decent brands ? Thanks !! *BTW, JSMusic closed down already ar? This post has been edited by Reverse Gravity: Mar 9 2007, 10:59 AM |

Pearl JJ is very high-volume and very tight sounding. Go for wood snare such as Maple that will give u warmer sound. Sizes also take account in sounding. Do your research. |

The best portable drumset in UK and now in Malaysia. Drummers have tested with very good comments and at a very reasonable price.
You can imagine the drumset only takes you 5 minutes to setup if you are bringing out for your gigs. You can fit everything into your Kenari. See picture Attached thumbnail(s) |

Anyone knows what kinda cleaner/lube is good for the pedals?
Currently I use electronic cleaner (non-alcoholic) and WD40. It doesn't last long at all, and it does not offer protection against oxidisation/rust. I've used engine oil before on other stuff and I'm considering using it for my pedals. |

Easier To Run is quite hard though... the formula of writing pop music is easy listening beats. that is why a band like Battles would never be on our radio. if you listen to radio hard enough, you'd notice that all the drum beats are simple and mostly can be followed by tapping your fingers. some drum beats might sound easy but they are very hard to replicate. that is another case. Plus, they aren't durable.anyway i'm looking for zildjian sticks. i know bently got but its kinda pricey What type of wood and size do you favor? I am just trying to keep up with you, but I fail miserably doing so. I think you mistook 16th note for 8th note la. And it's odd-timed because simply because it's out-of-time. |
