LOL. Yeah they have good cooling systems, if that is the hardware you are referring to. Their high specs should not contribute to weight.

A light laptop is not necessarily poorly built or flimsy. Something heavy is again not always well-built or sturdy, just rather difficult to push around on a desk due to its greater center of gravity.

I don't think 3GB RAM sticks exist. But there are dual/triple channel RAM configs, though one person mentioned the difference is negligible.

It's the things you mentioned in the "other than" part that makes many of us not want to buy XPS. The whole graphics card issue. And yes, some people are waiting for conclusive reviews, but in my experience, reviews don't tell the truth. Sure, forums of people complaining about the product they bought may be biased slightly on account of the purchaser's anger, but they contain more truth than your average online review.

So I would suppose from what you guys are saying with regards to the way I'm answering and the usage I'll get out of the computer, buying this rig is quite a good deal? The only problem I have is the warranty issue. That's problem my biggest headache now.

You can go to have a look on Asus notebooks as they all come with 2 years global warranty. thumbup.gif

Give Dell a call tomorrow during office hours. Try to ask for documentation.
Tell them about your situation.

Yes this laptop is a good deal, though it has disappointed many. And with warranty there shouldn't be much concern.

If it is a good deal then why has it been disappointing to many? Seems to be a contradictory statement. unsure.gif

1) design... compare that with Studio XPS, or even the classic XPS, u'll get wat we mean

2) customization... it's either quad core + GT 435M or dual core + GT 425M... does not make sense at all considering Dell has always been flexible when comes to hardware combination... and the SA have not been helpful in explaining why... my guess is either Dell juz want to bundle up the hardware, or they are using different mobo for different CPU (but for the latter, quad core + GT 425M should still be possible)

3) JBL audio... i ve no experience with JBL audio, but according to some ppl who ve dealt with it before, volume is on the soft side...

at base spec, yes, it's a pretty good deal, considering Lenovo Y460 with the same spec is selling at the same price as well... but if u want quad core + GT 435M, well, there are other alternatives... such as Asus N53Jq, rm500 more with GT 425M, but with better features (Bang & Olusfen audio for a start) and design...

Reviews look good so far, are all you users happy with yours? After the disaster that was my XPS M1530 (RM6006) with its corroded palmrest, faulty GPU and bad thermal pasting, I'm a little on the hesitant side but I really need a decent laptop as my M1530 has been failing.

What's worse is I have to order it from Malaysia and get it couriered to England. (What a predicament).

wongpeter: Yeah, what Astria said smile.gif Number 2's pretty much the main reason, while Number 1, just take a look at M1330 or Studio XPS, and Number 3, there are tons of other brands but they had to go with JBL >.<

On the other hand, if you want entry level i7 quad, if you want 2GB Nvidia card of slightly lower performance than ATI 5730, if you like the design (something less important than specs, on account of the price), then it's great.

Zerato: Oh, because you want the backlit keyboard and cheaper price, I see.

Try to have a look on Asus G53. You may order it from GenTechPC and import it to UK.

Why would it be sarcasm? Without the present discounts available to Dell UK customers, the XPS 15 in the UK would set you back much, much more than the Malaysian one does, according to the exchange rate of course, putting purchasing power aside.

According to some, Dell UK's XPS 15s have no backlit keyboard.

Thus I assumed that would be why you would buy it in Malaysia rather than the UK.

OH sorry D: I misread it as it was..pretty darn late over there. My apologies, and yes the VAT is a monster, sucking a good RM500. I could courier via FedEx for the same price and have it appear one day later..from Malaysia for the same price.

They do have the option of having a backlit keyboard, however I believe it to be 25 pounds, also more than what you'd pay here (About ~RM55?). Way to swindle their customers. Other reasons being that I MAY get a discount see.

Your thoughts on the rig itself? Good? Bad? As a user I mean. I don't buy those online reviews, all biased.

Totally biased.

Since I haven't used it myself I cannot say, but according to a user's screenshot and comments http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...0#entry37391113 temperature management (about the most important thing) is good.

Design has improved (not aesthetically, but functionally). Specs are decent but not enough to please previous users of XPS and their expectations. As soon as the options I want are made available I will buy it (that is, if the next new thing isn't out).

If you use Windows 7 then you know it is slow anyway, so reviews that claim their new purchases are "blisteringly fast" are just full of crap.

In the UK there was a very short deal for <500 pounds for a loaded XPS 15. Unfortunately it's gone now. But, if you had to pay 500 for shipping, does that justify having to go through shipping then? It's still a 2-3 week wait.

I have a XPS M1530 son, and the specs are definitely an improvement for price ratio.

I dislike the UK keyboard, and my cousin works in Dell Malaysia, so better option I suppose. Temperature management is a crucial feature to me. If its a huge leap over the M1530 (which gives me like 80c after Arctic Cooling MX-2 applied) I'm all for it.

Ah, with employee discount that would work out well, because this time round the XPS are not overpriced by too much as they usually are.
