it is an mp3 player.
see if it produce some sound when playing mp3.

when use mplayer to play the video files, it shall show what video codec and audio codec is being used, just run it in verbose mode.

My Lenovo N100 laptop used to have sound under Ubuntu Edgy
Then I installed Mplayer and it has been silent since.

There is sound in XP but none in Linux. I even reinstalled the
sound drivers but nothing.

Has anyone experienced this? Any fixes welcome!

i found out what's wrong with my system. Actually there are 2 sound card. both are enable mode. I try to disable one of it, and finally it;s working again.

One more thing. about REAL PLAYER. I download from the web and save it in my /tmp. I run and install it just following the steps. It works fine BUT whenever I restart my pc again, the real player is not working anymore..
the error message I got is----
"Could not launch menu item
Details: Failed to execute child process "realplay" (No such file or directory)"
then i re-download and reinstall.... problems keep on looping
did i miss out anything again?

i dunno if i have the right to ask here or not...since i'm the noob in ubuntu world..mind if i ask is there any details guide on how to install ubuntu right after u burn the OS into the CD....bcoz i have a problem to run Live Cd on my PC..after i boot my pc there is a command prompt that i not really understand....the option that being given was \mlx or something....(i cannot remember other option)..kindly pls help...i'm really wanted to test Ubuntu

Hmm. I'm not sure about this. Never tried realplayer before.
It could be caused by missing dependencies or something.

But it's always better to use apt-get to install package.
Have you enabled Automatix?

which ubuntu version u used? u should get menu as below after boot :

Start / Install Ubuntu
Safe mode
memtest
Run from other drive
etc....

Just move your cursor to the 1st one, then press enter..or plz provide actual msg u got after boot process (/mlx?)

my ubuntu mplayer can only play .mp3 files....
any other player can play all kind of files such as .rmv, .wma. mov ? that would be much easier for me

try amarok.. and install the w32codecs.. works for me.. tho I'm not too sure about real media..

it depends on xlibs but xlibs is no longer in use.
when you do apt-get install xlibs, you shall see the alternate packages that replace xlibs.
install those packages instead.

by the way, it should be apt-get install realplay, I believe.

hi guys,

last nite, i played around with user & group setting and i changed my home directory to root. originally, it is /home/sengkiat. Now, I cannot login my sengkiat profile. I also cannot login root because i do not enable root login.

Is there any way to edit the home directory in user & group setting using CLI?

I tried by add new user but the new user is not super user. So, it cannot access to administration control. What should i do guys?

FYI, I still new in Linux. Just install a few days ago. I really appreciate if any1 here can show my the solution step by step.

3. build-essential
when comes to task 2, i received this error::
E: Couldn't find package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-28-386

is there anything i should have done before apt-get install task 2?

guys, previously i've installed ubuntu on my 2nd hd and everytime i boot my pc, the grub will load, asking to run ubuntu or windows. but diz evening, i've reinstalled windows on my 1st hd and the grub is gone. how to reinstall back the grub? thanx~!!

have you enabled "restricted repository"?

do you have a rescue cd?
or another linux system around?
