I mean, what does Ubuntu detect it as?
What module did it use? (lsmod)
And what is the chipset detected (lspci)
Please let us know

You need to install it runlevel 3.
Means, just console, without running X.

Hmm. Sounds like IRQ's conflict.
How about disable some devices in your system and try booting again?

To switch to runlevel 3, you can just start a terminal screen and type telinit 3

To edit the /etc/inittab, you can use vi.
But the change in the file is permanent once you change it, means it will always boot in runlevel 3, unless you change back the value in the file to boot in runlevel 5.
Cheers!

could be you already hav pppoe running on your system. By default ubuntu use auto dhcp..u need to disable it 1st.. set to static.. or

you dont hav working eth0 (NIC). do >lspci to display your NIC & >lsmod to see if your card use proper module driver..

Better use pico or nano if you never use an editor in CLI before.. definitely easier than vi

How did you connect to the internet previously?
What IP address did you get previously in your LAN properties when connecting to the net?

Pardon, I have installed ubuntu 6.10 and managed to configure my usb Aztech 208u modem until the dsl light lighted up. After that, I am clueless on how to connect to streamyx.

When I tried sudo modprobe pppoatm and sudo pppd call ueagle-atm, the data light blinks a bit but in ifconfig, the ppp0 isnt displayed. Anyone have any idea/suggestion?

Oh ya, I need to know the VP&VC and what type of connection do streamyx use (pppoe, pppoa?)

EDIT: Problem SOLVED
