Dr. Skott Ahn, LG CEO, just introduced LG's latest Optimus One and Optimus Chic smartphones in an interactive digital press conference held online. The Optimus One is designed to be "your first smartphone", but it should cater for the experienced smartphone user as well.

You've probably already read some bits about Optimus One (LG P500) and Optimus Chic (LG E720). These are the phones that will hopefully bring LG back on the smartphone market map. LG has already hinted of their existence and even provided a couple of photos, but that was pretty much all.

However, as of today, we now have their full tech specs plus some new juicy images.

Both Optimus One and Chic run on the latest Android OS v2.2 Froyo and feature 3.2-inch capacitive HVGA TFT touchscreens, 600 MHz processors and all-round connectivity package – 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS support and digital compass, 3.5mm audio jack and FM radio. A 2GB microSD card is included on both retail packages.

LG Optimus One sports a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with VGA@18fps recording. It’s also capable of playing DivX and Xvid videos.

LG Optimus Chic on the other side packs 5 megapixel snapper and captures VGA@30fps videos. Unfortunately, according to its official specs Chic is only DivX compatible and we're still yet to see if it will play XviD movies too.

In addition to its piano black version, Optimus Chic will also be released in white color (at least for the battery cover).

It seems that the Optimus One has launched in the US. Any idea when it is going to launch in Malaysia?

Some early reviews:

I think this is a Sprint-branded Optimus One:

Email From LG today :

23/11/2010

Thank you for contacting LG Electronics

Dear valued Mr./Ms. ,

Refer to your inquiry, the LG Optimus One P500 is already launched in Malaysia market last week. But the stock distribution should be only available nationwide within a week time. But in order for convenient, I attached the dealer list in Klang Valley for your reference. Meanwhile the Optimus Chic is not yet launch in Malaysia and on market research progress. I wish to thank for your inquiry and interest on LG product.

Thanks
LG Service

Was looking at i5500 but a bit let down with the 2.8" screen.

Now this phone does look like a decent phone to me, at least a better buy than Wildfire wink.gif

Wonder how "good" is the UI compared to Sense though....

Yup, saw that too. Compare to Aria, definitely optimus one is more value for money, I just don't know why they put the HTC Aria price so high in Malaysia compared to other countries.

From techcentral's review, it seems it is kinda "stock-ish". Not much customization like Sense.

I'll cast my vote on optimus one coz

bigger screen : 3.2" vs 2.8"
higher resolution: 320x480 vs 240x320
419MB of RAM... ( unknown for wildfire)
froyo vs eclair
3.15MP vs 2MP camera

I think llobak was comparing it to Samsung i5500 instead of Wildfire though.

Still I consider this as a good budget smartphone.

yes... even the review in Sinchew also said below RM900... one of the cons seems to be the weak battery and also the software update will require u to install the LG update suite in ur pc.

I agree with u kenny. Im a current G5 user. I'll definitely go for the optimus one. The spec is like one level better than the G5. Price wise only 200 more. But i still love my G5.

This is really a great device for the price:
-Android 2.2 froyo
-600 mhz processor like the htc legend/aria
-419mb of ram (source gsmarena search for lg optimus one) the other sites says it's 512mb of ram i'm not really sure
-1500mah battery you get roughly about 2 days most reviews says

Really great phone i say biggrin.gif

same like me.. i'm also a G5 user.. very happy with the G5, just the screen is a bit too small for me..
spec wise, LG optimus seem to be a good buy if it's less than RM900.. plan to get it after reading more review about this phone.

smile.gif I read the review of this phone, 512MB RAM is awesome.
The froyo perfomance is nice, Quantrant score 431 point, Neocore 43fps

Highly Recommend by me tongue.gif

anyway, the reviewer found that the apps2SD has bug, most of the apps unable move to SD.
The flash 10.1 plugin unable install, not support flash at this moment

above problem should be resolve later

Flash 10.1 won't work on this phone, even with froyo.
The CPU equipped on the phone isn't ARMv7 processor, it just ARMv6.

ARMv7 and froyo are the prerequiste for flash 10.1 in android phone.

This phone can play youtube videos using a dedicated youtube app by google but going to the website and playing the video there cannot i guess unless it has flash lite but it will be a bit laggy playing it with flash lite..

Thanks
LG Service

so next week it will hit the shop. go get it

I think the build quality probably not as good as HTC's or SE's Xperia X8 (similar spec, smaller screen)

Guys!!!

I found out from a LG shop in Sunway Pyramid that the Optimus ONE is coming around 20th of December and is below RM1000. So the RM899 retail price tag could be true afteralll.

I found out from a LG shop in Sunway Pyramid that the Optimus ONE is coming around 20th of December and is below RM1000. So the RM899 retail price tag could be true afteralll.

Yup! A much value for money entry level Android smartphone.
A lot of my friends and colleagues are waiting for a sub RM1000 Android phone. I told them to wait for LG Optimus ONE.

What everybody must know is this. The phone is made by LG. But the Android OS or software, was created by Google.

The thing to look out for is how much did the manufacturer customised the Android UI.

On the top of my mind, there are 2 phones which have been heavily customised until their UI looks different and works different from the stock Android UI.
And they are Sony Xperia series of phones and Samsung Galaxy S.

As for this LG Optimus ONE, according to all the reviews, it is a stock Android 2.2 aka FROYO with minor little enhancement which are some good things which LG introduced to it.

Check out all the review links posted.

So like from my past experience, my phone that shut off itself was because of the software itself or the hardware? If software, then the optimus one will do superbly well

since the RRP price in thestar is RM899, i think it will be the same..
unless someone from thestar screw it up.. price over value, it wins hand up..
for now.. both galaxy 5 n optimus 1 is the best value for money.

LG invents imaginary 1GHz processor requirement to say Optimus One won't get Gingerbread

So here's the story: dude asks LG's US mobile team on Facebook when the Optimus One -- the basis for the various Optimus devices that have launched recently on American carriers -- will be getting Android 2.3. LG responds saying that "the minimum requirements for Gingerbread require 1 GHz processor," hence, no update's in the cards.

Well, Android lead Dan Morrill took to Twitter to drop some knowledge, saying "there's no hard minimum processor requirement for Gingerbread... trust me, if there were I'd know." In other words, whoever's manning the ship on LG's Facebook account is either sorely underinformed or showed some awful judgment in choosing a lie to justify keeping the Optimus off the upgrade path.

Sure, we can understand why LG wouldn't want to temper excitement for a still-new smartphone line by telling buyers their phones won't be receiving the next version of the platform, but the least they could've done is formulated a reasonable excuse, no?

There may not be official release of Gingerbread from LG,
but if there's any developer cooked some custom Gingerbread for this phone,
you can still flash/install it after you root your phone.

HTC is overpriced to you simply because they are slightly more expensive compared to similar spec phones,
but do you know why? If you know you wouldn't think they're overpriced.

HTC's Android phones strength lies in their HTC Sense UI, some may say it makes the OS heavier,
but you have to know what Sense UI is capable of doing first,
it is not simply just an UI overlay, it integrates deeply into the phone.
watch this video you'll understand,

I called LG service centre yesterday, they said they have launched it about 2 weeks ago. So I went to LG shop KLCC today, but the SA said that it is not yet available.

So I called the service centre again and told them about KLCC, i even asked whether it is available in any shop at Low Yat.. They gave me a dealer number to call (Celstar). The dealer said that Celcom will launched (or had already launched? -- not sure) this model with post paid plan. It will only be available on the market (for outright purchase) sometime in January..

Urghhh.. IDK whether I can wait that long. sad.gif

Nvr use HTC phone b4, not very sure how good is the HTC Sense UI..
from what i can c, many ppl will root their htc phone n install with custom ROM which is considered a better choice..
one strong point of HTC phone is there are lots of custom ROM out there for it..

*
Just watch the video, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Yes, a lot of people root their phone to install custom ROMs, including me,
but custom ROM doesn't necessarily means no Sense UI,
there are plenty of custom Sense ROM particularly for HTC phones,
you can try different types of custom ROM, e.g MIUI, AOSP,
that's one of the many strength of Android, you don't like it, switch, plenty room for customization,
and yea there are people who prefer the vanilla Android UI, or even the iPhone like MIUI rom,
but still there are people who tried out these ROM and in the end found that they still prefer Sense ROM,
just take a look at Desire thread.
I'm not saying that Sense UI is the best or anything,
but just trying to tell you why its slightly more expensive than other similar spec phones,
don't blindly assume that HTC phones are overpriced.

lol, fanboy?

I recommended plenty of other Android phones to other who are asking for recommendations,
especially this phone particularly, the LG Optimus One is now the best bang for buck phone for below 1k,
thus its always recommended by me, you can search my post if you want to.

you can call me a fan boy of Android maybe, but not Desire, or even HTC.
I'm simply telling why HTC phones are worth the slightly higher price,
if I'm fanboy, I'll be talking bad about Motorola Milestone xt720 by now. smile.gif

the fact is you're the one who are bad mouthing about other phones, and claimed xt720 the best? notworthy.gif
you're the one being funny here,
I respected you for having good knowledge regarding Android,
but seems like you deliberately throwing away the respect I have for you.

Gingerbread on Optimus

*
Either someone made a mistake in that Facebook post or it was the public outcry, but the LG Optimus One P500 will be allowed to enter the Gingerbread house after all. The whole 1GHz processor speed requirement turned out to be a mistake.
Another day, another LG Optimus One news. Just a couple of days a go bad news came by way of the LG Mobile USA Facebook page - no Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the LG Optimus One, citing a "1GHz minimum" requirement by the new OS. It was quickly rebutted on Twitter by a member of the Android team and LG admitted the announcement was premature and said they are waiting on an official compatibility document.
Now, LG has issued an official Public Notice apologizing for the confusion and have confirmed that they will upgrade the LG Optimus One P500 to Gingerbread. They didn't give any specific target date for when this will happen but current and future Optimus One owners (including all its carrier-specific variations) can breathe a sigh of relief. Presumably, the update will be available for the LG Optimus Chic E720, which has the same specs as the Optimus One (the ones that matter anyway).
Anyway, whatever caused the "misunderstanding" has been resolved, and the Optimus One has become an even better bargain than before.

please read careful ... allow to enter gingerbread house but dun know when.....

LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus. Google recently announced the Gingerbread platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code. Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. We will alert you as soon as more information on this topic is available.

LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.

Well, I'm ok with that though.

A budget phone with froyo running on it while most major brands still stuck with eclair, slowly rolling out froyo upgrade to their phones.
SE android series even more pathetic, just upgrading to Eclair recently.

Btw, when do u think HTC and Samsung Android series gonna get Gingerbread?
I reckon earliest will be June 2011 or even later.

They are just releasing the froyo update lately.

Total payable - 1444
minus Phone RRP - 899
left RM545

which means you are paying 545/12= RM45.42 per month for RM50 credit and 1GB data usage smile.gif

for celcom data plan, what will happen after we exceed 1GB?
will the speed be throttle down (like digi) or we will be charge additional rate per KB after that?

This calculation is according to my minimum usage which is within RM50 for monthly phone bill.

Case 1 ( Buy phone first(ORI) + monthly Phone bill)
RM899+(RM50*12)=RM1499

Case 2 ( Take the celcom plan)
RM 508+(RM78*12)=RM1444

Which mean I can save RM55 for the phone(ORI) plus free monthly 1GB.

Ok was wondering does this offer extends to existing Celcom postpaid users?
My dad is using postpaid Exec but dunno the package and w/o data plan..........
Was gonna tell him go get Defy till I saw this Celcom package and he probably will not change phone in a span of 2-3 years.... Advisable to take the Celcom offer or not?

EDIT: I haven't checked his bill but he is above average user... (dunno whether can be considered heavy user)

Added on December 14, 2010, 10:49 amCrap after reading this, I may want to tell my dad to get the def....
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_one_p500-review-544p7.php

Cos he will for sure edit SOME of his work in his phone..

mLite will give you 300MB while mBasic will give you 1GB. After you reach 300MB/1GB, the internet service is block and you have to pay RM3.88 as mDaily. No speed throttle. That was sad.

went to subang parade, ask seller at LG kiosk but was no luck, then go to celcom blue cube, only got 1 stock. want to buy at RRP price RM889 but she said the RRP price is not declare yet. damn! so, i decide to buy it with RM78 12-month contract with the price of the device RM508. the box is so small. suitable for x-mas gift. wink.gif

i can't talk much about performance yet because it is still charging. but the touchscreen is real responsive and fast. hard reset would take about a minute. my 1 hour experience with optimus one is great! hahaha. I love it!

Just got the phone through the Celcom deal = 50 (call time) + 38 (1 gig) data acces. Need to pay upfront 300 (will be deducted from bill for 1 year= -25 permonth) and phone costs 498.
I'm new to the android scene, been using Nokia and Iphone for the past couple of years. Got this handset because my Iphone finally died on me ( I'm one of the few "lucky" thousands who bought the white Iphone with battery problem).
I like the phone.
Its not fair to compare it with the Iphone, but it fits all my e- connections (exchange email, FB, twitter). The widget thing definitely beats Iphone.
Performance wise, it's quite average ( it is an entry level droid after all). Tried posting this using the LG Optimus, but gave up after a while (more on that later).
The capacitive screen works, but there are lags if you have a lot of things opened. Good thing there's a Taskkiller app to free up memory. No problems with the basic stuff, calls, emails, wifi, etc. Portable wifi teethering is a plus, again beating Iphone ( unless its jailbroken!). There's the Ndrive installed on the card. Not the best gps app ( haven't they heard about qwerty keyboards?). The input is basically alphabet layout from A to Z. It works though. There's no zooming in or out. The nokia maps in my old E71 still beats this app.
A few quirks about the phone:
so the standard Android keyboard is a normal mobile phone ( not qwerty) in potrait mode. Lg has supplied their own lg keyboard app. The problem is that the key buttons are too narrow. My fingers are relatively slim ( I'm a skinny person). Still its very hard to touch the right buttons. Maybe with a little more practice, things will get better. Landscape mode is a little bit better.
Sometimes there's a certain LGIMTS app error that shows up, needing you to kill it. Not sure what it is, but doesn't seem to affect the phone performance.
Received two sd card failure notice, had to take out and reset the card again.
Thinkfree office offers word editing. But this phone isn't built to write your company fiscal year report. Its good for small size documents and little bit of editing. Same goes for pdf, large size files will cause serious lag.
Overall, its a good deal. I'm quite happy with it, plus with the gingerbread upgrade is around the corner. Just don't expect a speedy, snappy phone with this one. I'll give it a slightly above average performance.

As mentioned by other users, the only place to buy now is at Celcom cube.
Nobody manage t spot this phone in other LG store.
rm899 but some Celcom cube force you to buy min, xpax starter (rm8.50)
before they allow you to buy it with no data plan.

I bought mine at Sunway Pyramix's Celcom cube.

For those in Penang, try the celcom blue cube at taman mahsuri near PISA, that's where I bought mine. And it seems Celcom is taking advantage of their early stock, need to register or buy a starter pack if you want to buy the phone.

Internet browsing.
The stock browser is more than enough for internet browsing. Although I do suggest getting Opera Mobile for backup. However, pinch zooming is not as smooth as Iphone 3gs. That being said, it still works, pages do load up fast. I don't think it supports flash though.....

PDF performance.
50 mb pdf files? I think that might be a little bit taxing for the phone. However, since I do not have any PDF in that size, that is something I could not confirm. I did try loading a 3+ mb file, pinch zooming isn't smooth, but still readable and functioning. Final word, do not expect it to be as smooth as Iphone 3gs, but better than E71.

Satellite lock is surprisingly fast. 15-35 seconds cold start. The map on Ndrive itself is actually very updated and comprehensive. It's just the input thing that's a little bit off.

Or should say they are unable to stock up due to overwhelming sales from the rest of the world? Our shore always three steps behind others...

Hopefully we are being optimistic about the difficulty in finding this phone is causes by overwhelming sales else where.
Cos when ever i mention about i m looking forward to this phone, my friends around me will look at me like i am nuts and they will start mumbling about how great and mighty the certain phone with an apple as logo and also big N. I know they are good but not that everyone would have the same like and also the plenty lot of S11 rclxub.gif

Yup, you may buy the phone straight away without any contract. For the 1st time I also want to buy the phone only. But after think about that it is worth to get the phone with data plan. Somemore they will discount the phone price for you thumbup.gif

warranty by LG.. not celcom.. 1 year..

anyway, i found that the battery drained pretty fast lah.. fully charged last night.. 3.30pm.. already at 35%..
maybe it's because of i'm playing & downloading apps/games alot..

Garmin asus a10 is better because
5MP, bulid in 4GB, but no radio.
I will go for LG Optimus One because the RPP is cheaper than Asus A10 and gingerbread 2.3 compatible.

Hi, shadow bro. rclxm9.gif I am giving up on the phone hunting, fed up with what LG is thinking, the last time i check with LG customer support was on 25 Nov where they say the phone already launch on 20 Nov, and it will took 0ne to Two week for all the dealer to get the phone. And yet after one month,it is still the all mighty CELCOM getting its exclusive right to market the phone. This guy at CELCOM are not interested in selling the phone, as usual , they want people to use their line, in business stand point, of cause they are rite. But what happen to LG? this is plain ridiculous for taking so long to launch a phone doh.gif. I will go for Samsung Wave instead, if you can't marry jolin , then go and marry angelina jolie... muhahahahaha drool.gif

the only thing that I frustrated about LG Optimus One: battery drain quite fast.

lot of background synchronize activity, refresh news, FB, twitter, wheather, sure it consume lot of battery but what the use of smartphone if I turn the sync off? some more, brightness set to only 30%. I did very little call/sms because already have primary phone. I jadi frust sebab I baca GSMarena they said battery tahan lama. problem ni my unit saja ke? how's yours?

other than battery issue, this device real snappy.

Its normal case for smart phone. If you open the 3G connection will drain faster. Maybe you can set to 2G mode only if you're not using any data connection.
And only turn on the 3G connection when you wish to use the internet etc..
Mine can last slightly more than 1 day, with normal call & sms usage, gaming, music, plus keep on searching nice application on android market laugh.gif

Any user tried GPS locking? I was informed it comes with NDrive, does it work well compared to Papago?

Really need input on GPS as my main requirement is fuss free navigation.
Anyway, great to see accessories available.

yes.. it's pre-installed with n-drive.. i tried once... the map was ok.. gps locking quite fast..but the menu not as user-friendly as garmin (for me la)..
if gps is your main requirement.. then u shud consider garmin nuvifone a50..

Thanks for comment. I did considered A50 but I do not think Asus is really commited into Froyo update for its phone since if will affect Garmin integration as well. Looking for relatively new phone with good support, LG recent announcement for Gingerbread release is a plus to me, at least it comes with Froyo as stock OS. Guess I should try our Papago and nDrive.

I tried NDrive, but it take some time to locked the satellite.
And I just install M7 Papago, only take few seconds to obtain the signal and ready for navigate laugh.gif

sad to say that.. it's not possible...
you need to turn on the mobile network in order to send/receive mms.. by turning this on, it means that there will be background data transfer/etc goin on.. and you will be charged by data transfer if you don't have internet package..
thts y many new user not aware bout this and later they will be rclxub.gif when they c their bills..

I never know sending / receiving mms will incur data charges as well.  rclxub.gif
I thought it's counted per mms sent and receiving mms would be free of charge.
*
how should i say...
we need to turn on the mobile network in order to receive/send mms.
there will be no charges for the data transfer for mms..
but then.. when we turn mobile network on, other app may do background data transfer/update thru the net which we may not be aware of.
this is what i face before when i just turn on the mobile network and i check my bill and i'm being charged for the internet usage.

A 2G network with GPRS is enough for MMS. Even my old K750 can do that. Charge per MMS.

mms wont be charged for data.. but there are apps that constantly updating in the background once we activate the mobile data.. either on 2g or 3g..
i dont know if we can control the apps from connecting to the internet or not.. as i'm new to android. sweat.gif

I did not say MMS will charge for data. I meant charge per MMS sent. My intention was to reply that a 2G alone is capable of receiving MMS. On your apps traffic, I have no idea but turning notification off could helps.

Hi all, I'm a newbie here. I just bought the phone from sungei Wang stall. I have a few question here, why I cannot track my location using gps as it comes out with an error code? And can you tell me the camera of this phone is 3.0 or 3.2? As it is written 3.0 at the camera lens there. Thanks

Did you turn on the GPS? Just click on GPS icon on notifications bar.
3.0 MP. should be enough for normal usage.
Last week I snap some photo at Midvalley with xmas decoration, transfer to pc and found out that picture quality not bad and acceptable nod.gif

Connect USB cable between your phone and computer.
On your phone select turn on the mass storage.
Enter memory card, select LGPCSuiteIV, launch LGInstaller.exe
install the pc suite. Once it done, PC suite will auto launch, select for the Update device.
Then PC suite will search for the update. If update is ready for your phone, just click on update.
And PC suite will remind you to backup your phone, is up to you. I select update without backup.
All my data still remain.
Thats all icon_rolleyes.gif

Connect USB cable between your phone and computer.
On your phone select turn on the mass storage.
Enter memory card, select LGPCSuiteIV, launch LGInstaller.exe
install the pc suite. Once it done, PC suite will auto launch, select for the Update device.
Then PC suite will search for the update. If update is ready for your phone, just click on update.
And PC suite will remind you to backup your phone, is up to you. I select update without backup.
All my data still remain.
Thats all  icon_rolleyes.gif

Does this phone comes preloaded with Ndrive Gps software which can be used without 3G/GPRS data connection ?

Is the maps for Malaysia is free ? Don't want to use google maps as did not have data plans for now.

Yes, preloaded with Ndrive. Good enough but keyboard input sucks. Imagine your keyboard in alphabetical order....

Though this may be true, the OP1 has an official upgrade to Gingerbread. Though we can always get a custom Gingerbread for the SG3..

Just found out LG O1 is actually made in Korea. And upon purchasing your phone, reseller will send a sms to LG to register. In turn, you will get extra 1 mth warranty.
