I did call up VW one day and talked to them regarding the RNS510. I asked them is it ok if we installed it into our cars. The person I spoke to said it will still void the related warranty if it is not bought directly from them, even if it is installed by any of their dealers (it seems there not allowed to install for us as well). So I asked, if we could buy from VW Malaysia instead. He said it is possible.. but the price is VERY expensive compared to the 4k which is currently being charged for the recon unit.

i talked to SA in TTDI Cergaz about RNS510, he said not going to void the warranty.. that is nice wink.gif
once i decide to install RNS510, i will try to get a written confirmation from TTDI on this...so no argument in the future when it comes to claim.

BTW, anyone interested to join the TT this Friday?

RNS510 is from VW mah, so it is plug n play, no wire cutting involved. Technically speaking, should void warranty because the player is of unknown origin. But it all depends whether the dealer 'wants' to claim for u or not.

Polo owners, do you know where exactly the engine number is located? Is it imprinted on the engine block somewhere?

QUOTE(gregy @ Jan 3 2011, 04:00 AM)
I did some approximate calculations and here are the results of the power bands between the Polo 1.2 TSI and Civic 1.8S:

1,550rpm = Polo (38hp), Civic (31.57hp)

3,000rpm = Polo (73.7), Civic (68hp)

4,000rpm = Polo (98hp), Civic (95hp)

5,000rpm = Polo (105hp), Civic (119hp)

6,000rpm = Polo (102hp), Civic (139hp)

Calculations were based on torque output at the given rpms (converted from Nm to pound foot) x rpm, then divided by 5252.

So, this explains the "seat of the pants" feeling of driving a turbocharged Polo TSI at anything below 4,000rpm and in that sense I can concur that driving the Polo around town can be compared to a 2.0-litre NA car; however for acceleration and top speed you can see that the Civic is no slouch here. The main difference is not because of the turbocharging, but the fact that the Polo is just slightly over 1 tonne while the Civic is heavier at 1.24 tonnes. No need to mention about transmission loss, as the Civic's 5AT only robs approximately 20% of power to the wheels, which is very close to that of a manual tranny.

If you look at this vid, you'll see that the lack of low end torque doesn't impede the Civic, as the gears are designed to upshift at around its max torque output for flat out driving:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkdUURkcZ9c&feature=related

Nonetheless, that @$$-shoving low end torque of the Polo is more fun as a daily driver. If only the seats weren't so cramped lol...

Good calculation and analysis.. Polo strong point is high torque at low RPM and high power to weight ratio.. most jap cars on the road can eat Polo's dust cool2.gif

Just go and get it only. The warranty they are talking about is that you can't claim warranty for the RNS unit itself. If you are worried about it, keep the RCD310 which I am doing myself. So if you have problems and want to claim warranty just swap the HU only.

Personally the RNS looks awesome but it's still rather pricey. Can get other accessories hehe.

So when you going for Stage 1?

The RNS510 supports GPS navigation, so I am not sure if the cars we get here in malaysia is already pre-wired with a satellite antenna. Anyone who has installed the RNS510 can confirm if its just a simple plug and play to get everything working incl the GPS navi?

u need the VW msia/sg map disc, which i have but it cost me rm2k when i got it 2 years ago. i dont recommend the RNS because

- the maps are very outdated (late 2007)
- majority of RNS come from very dodgy sources
- the navi software is ancient and not very intuitive
- too many diffrent firmware versions, which affects GPS accuracy, unless its firmware 26xx, other versions can be as much as 500m off
-unlike the RCD510 which 99% of the time is p&p, u will have to code the RNS for sure..thers better things to buy for your car then the RNS
- i had my RNS for about 6 months, then decided i didnt need it...sold it and got a RCD instead

Dashboard view. RCD510 installation done by jwrx (Ryou). Loved it. Definitely looks way better than RCD310.

Apparently there are some updates to the RNS510 unit, manufactured after Nov 2010.

"This new generation of RNS-510 navigation unit features updates that enhance speed, LED monitor, reduce glitches found in older firmware versions and allow for advanced features such as support for 32GB HDSD cards, voice features with optional BT kit, and more."

More info here:
http://www.mfd3.com/store/complete-kits/oe...gation-package/

From what I read, its essentially a RCD510 with Navi, although the Navi may not be perfect, its still cleaner than a dash mount Garmin which is prone to theft.

there have been many updates and firmware updates for the RNS, the issue is that you can never know what version you are getting until u open the parcel. Also, the RNS hardrive is susceptible to damage during the long journey to msia (most units come from europe). firmware updates doesnt matter to the RCD..cos its essentially just a CDplayer, but it affects the navi function for RNS

Anyway...ppl who belum cuba, belum tau, so will always want "the best' for thier car, based on internet research. im just speaking from xp, and the fact that i have brought in quite a few RNS, my 2 sen is to get a RCD and a garmin OR find someone with a actual RNS and play around with it to see if its what u really need/want

if u must have a GPS integrated HU, then u can look at the kenwood DNX which will fit VW cars

How much would the Kenwood be? And can their Garmin maps be updated using MFM or MSM maps?

As I heard most of the steering controls might not work if you use other headunit brands (Alpine, Kenwood, etc). Correct me if I am wrong though. Best would be to check with an accessory shop. I have an accessory shop which I normally goes to which provide good service and workmanship. PM me if you wanna know more. smile.gif

Thanks for the experience sharing. Very valuable info!

This Kenwood unit looks like a great alternative to the RNS510. Any known cons of the Kenwood DNX520VBT vs. say the OEM RNS510 or RCD510 you can share?

Somehow, I regret getting CSG for my GTi.... because dirt/dust can be seen very easily on it. But when it is clean, it is stunning. But I guess that goes for every other colour. nod.gif

I was told to wait for 2 weeks before opening my windows due to the rainy season (lack of sunshine). I had to open my door all the time when i enter/exit shopping malls and when I go through toll.... so mafan.

Looks good.... but a little too 'high profile' for me. Attract too much attention. At most I think I will just change the rims and exhaust system. The quad exhaust by MTM looks good. Don't like the abt's quad exhaust... too weird for my taste.

Yup went through the same thing as well except that for the windows I waited 3 days while the demister I still haven't turned it on since last month, LOL

Yeah the front looks a little too much like "I want attention, please look at me" kinda feel. I really don't like the ABT's quad exhaust setup too!

Golf TDI conversation to GTI bodykit. Everything seems very seamless and easy to install!
