hey, guys, i'm considering ssd but i dont know if it does make a big difference for me. with the money spent on ssd, i could also get a better cpu or gpu. please help me! which component do you think i should spend on?

i am a architectural student. the programs i use are photoshop, autocad and 3dsmax.

Depend on what sort of spec you have ATM
If all aspect of your pc is good enough for you then SSD is a well justified upgrade biggrin.gif

One thing just occurred to me. That 256GB SSD might not have a spectacular performance and the OEMs like Dell might overcharge on the SSD. You might want to investigate further about the SSD that they will bundle together with your laptop. Of course, you'd have to balance it out with the fact there aren't any alternative cheap 256GB SSD on the retail market. But good luck anyway. smile.gif

I don't know the programs very well, but I could say that Photoshop's font loading would be faster. tongue.gif

Erm about photoshop,
it is depends on your processing speed and ram availability.
A sifu once said 12GB ram is not enough for him to merge 14 5DMark2 21MP RAW File. Considering 40MB each photo. biggrin.gif

But then opening your file to PS is depends on your HDD/SSD because you are loading it laugh.gif

Just threat SSD just like your smartphone.. i.e Operati8ng system & other proigrammes + probably smaller but frequent working files - SSD & others such as big photos, videos, Games & etc, save it in ext HDD....You enjoy the SSD for sure..both interm of quick, less heat & extended battery life

Wth that in mind, an entry level 30GB or even 40GB is sufficient already wth about 10-20GB xtra space after those system, programmes files & even your working files.. smile.gif ..Entry level SSD getting cheaper...Starting from RM230 for basic 30GB SSD

I just bought Corsair's F series 60GB SSD. I hope it's a wise choice as I wanted the one with SandForce controller.

Aarrgghh!! I just found out my P5K MOBO has taken away the SATA's AHCI support. I'm left with IDE only Now my SSD can't run as fast as it should cry.gif

Max i can get is 160MB/99MB doh.gif

Update the firmware will not affect anything inside the SSD, right? sweat.gif

Looks pretty good to me. Except random read.

Since you have an OS installed, the benching results gets a tad funny. Plus the DuraWrite might have kicked in depending on how many times you have stressed tested the SSD.
Random Write is super, but Random read is indeed a bit low. Try playing some music on the background, it helps in the random read speed. Seriously

PS: 5x1GB is pretty darn hardcore to test an ssd. Try running it at 3x100MB, gives about the same result, minus the write stress on it.
How does it feel running on an old rig? Snappy?
*
Yeah it feels really snappy. Loading JDownloader doesn't slow down the system anymore, plus system shutdown and boot is really fast, as expected.
I plugged in my previous HDD with the OS and all still intact, and the difference is kinda like going back to a 1MB Streamyx line from a 20MB Unifi line. laugh.gif

After hearing the latest news, thank god I haven't switched to Sandy Bridge. Perhaps I'll let this SSD stay in this old rig. laugh.gif

Upgrading from old rig to SB gives less performance improvement than getting an SSD. Your priorities are just fine. nod.gif

The difference can be a lot and it can also be hidden. A simple method to show the difference is to view image galleries in the Windows Explorer in icon mode. With SSDs it'll almost be instantaneous and noticeably slower for HDDs. However, Windows 7 will then hide the difference by using the cache, so long as it has spare memory available.

If you're lacking in RAM, SSDs will give a noticeable all around improvement. Even if you're not lacking in RAM, SSDs will still be good for the initial scan and generally lower latency.

If you have the budget, I would recommend considering owikh84's RM 750 for an OEM Intel G2 160GB. While it isn't as fast as current SSDs, it is still good enough on performance and rather cheap on capacity.
