just installed unifi this morning at my home.
yep the ping and the speed is reasonably good. however the dlink wifi router that they supplied was bad. lan cable connection to the router was ok. but the wifi is horrid, i cant even maintain a proper wifi connection even tho i am in the same room with a clear line of sight. anyone else having this issue pls? can we buy a better alternative router to replace that sucky dlink?? thank you. |

Thank you for yr input GreenSamurai.
Please can someone who is "learned" help to list down the models of alternative wifi router for unifi. The list would help the "technically-challenged" ppl (eg. i am one). Thanks again. |

QUOTE(iv'N @ Aug 30 2010, 09:46 PM) Its not something on TM's side, but a limitation of VDSL. The reality is that VDSL uploads are never 100% symmetrical with the download path due to channel bonding overheads. On a slightly related note, I would like to share an example of NBN implementation in Australia. Your eyes are not kidding you: a standard ADSL 2+ modem/router in a fibre installation. The GPON that NBN Co uses (or at least Internode) uses has the standard 4 ethernet ports, but 2 standard RJ45 ports also. One of which is a ADSL port. The concept: the fibre is dug into your home, which is usually terminated in the living room. If all the computers are upstairs, you'd have to rewire the home for ethernet. Else use a wireless router, which can be problematic. The premise: Once you have cut your landline, you can use the internal wiring of the house for ADSL 2+ delivery. So plug in a cable from the GPON ADSL port to a wall socket, then upstairs, plug in your ADSL 2+ modem into the upstairs telephone wall port. So essentially the distance between the ADSL 2+ modem and the "DSLAM" is from upstairs to downstairs. And you can have your internet access point anywhere you want. While the ADSL 2+ modem can sync near perfect 24Mbit/s downstream, you're limited to 1Mbit/s upstream. Not too bad if you're in the 25Mbits/2Mbits plan, but that sucks if you're in the 50Mbits/4Mbits plans and beyond (I still don't understand why the links are Asymmetrical in NBN despite being fibre and all). The good news is that one can use their own end user access equipment, with almost no rewiring needed. Downsides are limited speed that doesn't use the full potential of fibre, and ping times have about a 50-80ms overhead converting from ADSL to Optical. |

Hi Guys and Gals,
TM Finally replaced the faulty DIR-615 yesterday and I immediately used rivvanrp's instructions to set the dlink as a VLAN Bridge to bridge to my trusty Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT. So far so good and I think running it like this will hopefully make the Dlink last longer as it no longer has to do the heavy task of routing AND pumping all that IPTV packets. BTW my BTU / GPon unit is upstairs and my IPTV is downstairs. I used homeplugs to connect to my IPTV downstairs and it works very well! Huawei BTU[LAN1] ---> [WAN]DIR-615 <TM Firmware, but set as VLAN Bridge> [LAN3] ---> [WAN] Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT [LAN/WiFi] ---> PC's DIR-615 <TM Firmware> [LAN4<RED Port>] ----> [HL110E Homeplug x2] ---> IPTV STB This post has been edited by keevster: Aug 31 2010, 08:31 AM |

i've been running the dlink router 24hours for about 5 days and no problem...
I'm on vdsl. What I did I use a notebook fan, which u can get about RM10 (the clear plastic with 3 fans) and place the huawei modem & dlink router on it... No issue and have not restarted at all... Cheers! |

hi guys,
My current line is streamyx 1mbps and i got about 20-25ms of ping time to the first hop. I am staying in a high rise building and Unifi is going to be implemented through VDSL here. From some of the post here, it gives me the impression that VDSL will increase the 1st hop ping to additional 20-35ms on the first hop(due to interleaving). Can someone confirm this? I do play online games like sc2 and dota, and this increase in latency definitely is not something I am looking forward to by signing up to Unifi. comments appreciated |
