Mascherano set for Hodgson talks

Javier Mascherano met up with Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson for the first time after returning to pre-season training.

The Argentina captain has been uncontactable since going on holiday after the World Cup but was back at Melwood on schedule along with compatriot Maxi Rodriguez.

Hodgson tried to speak to the 26-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a summer reunion with former Reds boss Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan, following the end of the player's involvement in South Africa.

However, the 62-year-old Englishman was only able to leave messages for Mascherano telling him he was looking forward to meeting him back on Merseyside as his calls were not returned.

Hodgson will outline his plans to Mascherano in much the same way as he has already done to senior players Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Fernando Torres in an attempt to persuade him he has a future at Anfield.

But there still remains a nagging doubt that the combative midfielder, who was offered a new contract in the latter stages of last season, has set his sights on a move to the continent.

Neither Mascherano nor Rodriguez will be available for Thursday's Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie against Rabotnicki in Macedonia.

However, Hodgson admits he may have to field a number of his other World Cup stars earlier than he would have liked.

The club's medical staff have warned their manager bringing the likes of Gerrard, Carragher, Glen Johnson, new signing Jole Cole and Daniel Agger back too soon may have dire effects later in the season.

Unfortunately, a largely reserve side has failed to score in two pre-season friendlies and Hodgson admits he may not be able to afford to take the risk of not using senior players.

"I don't know what to do at this stage," he said.

"I will have to liaise with them and (head of sports science) Peter Brukner and make a decision by Tuesday on what sort of team I can put out.

"I can promise the Liverpool fans we will put out the best possible team, without compromising the future.

"It is going to be a difficult discussion between myself and Peter because his feeling is we shouldn't use any of them and I am going to be tempted to say I want to use quite a few of them.

"The only players I will take will be the ones that I definitely think will play a valuable part in the game.

"If we are talking about senior players, it would be players prepared to start the game.

"I would not take Steven Gerrard there to play for the last 10 minutes as a substitute."

One senior player who will be available is midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who sat out Saturday's friendly defeat to Kaiserslautern with a knee problem.

"Peter Brukner told me he ran for the first time on Saturday so I would expect him to be fit for Thursday," added Hodgson.

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Jul 26 2010, 02:35 PM)
Mmm the more I read, the more it resembles a transfer market on Fantasy Football. The mood is without emotion.

I've always subscribe to the belief that no player is bigger than the club but at the same time, I have come to feel as though Torres was going to be a part of the club for a long time to come. After watching the video hosted by Michael Robinson, I was sure that Fernando Torres would go down as a legend in Liverpool folklore. After all he inherited Dalglish's chant, before the Torres bounce was developed. The sight of him shaking hands with greats like King Kenny, Souness and Sammy Lee in some ways convinced me that he would be a permanent fixture at the club for years to come but alas, it would appear that it was pure fantasy.

The Torres song is the best one for any player in a long time. It has to be the most sung in recent times and it's contagious. Pity some never took the initiative to learn it's lyrics. Come on guys, it has to be near and dear to your heart, no? Back to the point. This is a player that to me was destined for greatness snd it devastates me to think that he may be leaving. In the short time that he has been wearing the red of Liverpool, he has demonstrated the tenacity, heart, professionalism and work ethic becoming of a Liverpool player. He has above all, shown not only respect, but a deep appreciation for the fans.

Sure we can buy quality players from the funds we'll raise from his sale, but we are not guaranteed a player with the same attitude.

Interested to hear why you think he'll stay for sure.

thanks for the video duke , after watched the video I still think Torres will stay for another season .He love the kop and this club so much and I think he will give a chance to new management and probably new owner, if he is a liverpool fan he would understand how important ''fernando torres'' to liverpool football club.

I am with duke on the point of "no player being bigger than the club". It is the same with the manager, assistant manager, the list just go on. The thing is that I would love for Torres to stay for another season, at least, to try and see whether he could win something with us. I won't blame him for wanting to leave, as he is coming into his prime, and if he stayed with us, the chances of him winning would probably diminished if the 2 clowns are still there. A very good example is Bryan Robson, for the player he was, he only won a couple of titles while at Man United, and that was towards the end of his career, and NO European honours at all.

I am not saying that Torres should leave in searching for honours, I am more the type who thinks he should give the manager some faith, give it another season, give his all, and most importantly stay injury free. He must remember, that the plight we are in are as much down to his injury record, in which he was constantly searching for match fitness. Then he'd get fit and then be injured again. To me, he owed us that much, to give another good season, try to win a cup or who knows, if the team somehow magically clicked, go for the title.

Many don't realised this, but this is essentially the same squad from last season with a couple of quality additions, no less Joey Cole and Milan Jovanovic. If the squad from last year is tipped to win the title after finishing 2nd in 2008/09, this squad, with the additions, should definitely better last season's performance. Don't forget, it's a brand new season, everyone will start with equal footing and everyone will be going for 3 points in every match. I say we'd know a bit more of the squad after the first 5 matches then readjust our expectation, but for now, if someone tells me that we'd win the title, I'll say, why not? After all, the season has yet to kick off and we have yet to lose (or win for that matter) a match, so let's have some positivity in cheering the team on! flex.gif

I really think that even with 70 million in transfer for Torres, we would only get 5-10 million from that. Remember Alonso's transfer ?

it'll be a massive blow especially in terms of the players confidence if Torres do leave. But the last time we won a trophy, Torres wasn't here yet... and I'm sure there'll always be another player to step up as the new Kop hero.

... if we only won one trophy, it's regarded as a bad year. - Souness
let's hope RH will bring back those great old days...

I couldn't really remember Torres playing any season for Liverpool with short hair.
All the while, I remember him bearing long hair. (I fancy him with shorter hair)

Now he's short haired, maybe he's destined not playing for us in short hair. IF he goes, all the best to him for giving us the wonderful memories!
IF he stays, let's win some great honours for next seasons!

The Telegraph says Hodgson is believed to be closing in on Figueroa, the Wigan and Honduras left-back.

The player will leave this summer and Liverpool remain confident of agreeing a £6 million fee.

The player's agent, Jean-Marc Goiran, has confirmed that a "deal is almost in place with Liverpool" for the 27 year-old.

ditto!

Torres, one more season please. If Cole finally fulfills his potential for a whole season (not sporadically or in patches), Gerrard returns to his rampaging self, and Aqui starts to impose himself, we may put together a memorable season. Just one season and see if the club is really going places.

I have faith that Torres will stay.

But if he leaves, it will be for Rafa's new team. Probably.

He already said it once; Liverpool is his English team, Athletico Madrid is his Spanish team.

Inter will be his Italian team?

Now everyone wishes to see Torres back in red so do i badly infact..but in the end its his choice...and if he does decide to pull the trigger, i wouldnt hold it against him..and hope the club squeeze's every single penny out of his transfer if that happens

No one is bigger than the club, when Owen left we all thought it was doom and gloom it was replaced by Torres who knows if he does leave maybe someone will step up?

Yes, no one is bigger than the club. Those who leave, we just have to, unfortunately milk them.

agree with most of you as usual it's been awhile since we have a 20goal per season number 9 and would hate to see him leave but will still adore him for his exploits upfront and his feel good factor. in this 2 seasons, we've missed him alot through injuries and if only he would have carried on for about 3/4 of the season like rooney and carry his momentum, i will bet on him achieving his 100 goals already.
