QUOTE(finestq @ Feb 20 2012, 09:18 PM)
my experience with the so called branded bulbs is pretty hit and miss... my current house used all hitachi bulbs initially but screw on type... some lasted some time but most didn't really last that long. Eventually changed to the cheaper chinamade/local brands... also felt it lasted about the same. however, the PLC appeared to be better as I changed 2 of my downlights that i switch on every night about 1 year later after the light itself spoilt. With the everynight use, one of the bulb lasted about 3-4 years and still going strong, another one also hit and miss but lasted about 1+ year before I changed another...

Actually no need special skill, is just connecting 2 wires from source, and 2 wire to output.

My situation of using at the car porch for the timer where backup battery is need.

The timer is locate above the ceiling beside the downlight. So I can't always adjust the time. From morning till before I sleep, I off the main switch to the timer than to the light. But the timer is set ON at 7pm till 7am. So without the backup battery, the timer is stop working. When the time that I didn't OFF the main switch and require the timer run as usual is when I go for holiday or not in home.

probably true. I never change the battery before since day 1. And it is 14yrs ago. Where got battery last that long 1. For 14 yrs, I only readjust the timer 2x. That is quite accurate running compare those china 1.

I tot install downlight only cost you RM5-10 per unit? Fan point should be RM20-30. Mind to share why your didn't ask wiremen to install for you as well?

For me, my contractor FOC for me included in light point price.

6 inch aluminium frame down light(square shape).

You have any square shaped down lights with PLC tubes? what is the price like?(with or without bulbs)?
*
got price for YET, fitting alone RM8.00, normal bulb RM4.50 to RM5.50. The price you get RM13.50/set is very good. Try asking if you can just buy the fitting and then fit with PLC tubes and ballast. the YET downlight can also use PLC tubes, just ask them to change to PLC holder. Philips PLC18W tube costs RM6.00/pc and good ballast cost RM5.50 (Sova brand). The lighting shop can give very good price coz they order in bulk, and also they always fight price among themselves biggrin.gif

depends on the type of designs you like. don't go for too fanciful ones, the designs may not tahan lama biggrin.gif white downlights are easiest on the eyes, especially low ceiling situation. get bulbs where there are ready replacements, like energy savers. LEDs are getting popular becos of the low power consumption, but good ones are too expensive. cheaper versions don't last, esp the driver(transformer).

Definitely go green. Think energy saving, no fancy chandeliers that uses cfl. Downlights and ambient lighting are quite expensive since u need to put a lot plus plaster ceiling cost but they look really nice and zero maintenance. Dont put downlights everywhere, mix and match with other types.

Living room can either put energy savings chandelier, downlight or even track lighting. Dining room put pendant lighting but if ceiling low use ceiling mounted lights instead. Kitchen more suitable use downlights. Toilet use wall mounted lights at both sides of a mirror.
