My gliders of 6 all on HPW diet for 2 years now.. =) All doing extremely well.. I dont see any problem with introducing HPW to them.. All diet must be fed balanced with the appropriate ratio of fruits & veges, plus suitable supplements & treats.. Not to mention regular vet visits..

Cheers

Added on August 9, 2010, 3:22 pmThanks to the PET LOVERs who bring in these products from oversea!! Good job!! I only support those who r using these products for their own gliders, rather than to earn a profit by copying what others selling on the market, worst case, doesn't even have gliders as their own precious pets..

Cheers

Hello everyone....We need someone's advise regarding sugar glider's weight. Ever since we bought the digital scale we have been monitoring and recording their weight. Our Peanut's weight increases by 6 grams (142grams -> 148grams) Twileena's 5 grams (87grams -> 92 grams). Mia's weight increase by 3 grams ONLY (92 grams -> 95 grams). Apple and Gizmo their weight are the same as before. As for the growing joeys increases by 3 - 5 grams within 4 days.

My first question is ....
1. Is Peanut overweight...he is very hyper active little guy.. and we do provided them.... each cages with wodent wheels, cage accessories and toys except for the 4 feet cage which we installed 2 wodent wheels in it for them.

2nd question.......
Ever since Mia's pregnant , we only use suggie hammock instead of the sleeping pouch for them to sleep in and her nails always got caught tangled in it. I'm afraid to clipped her nails due to her pregnancy n lactation and we don't want her to be stressed out. Any suggestions on how or there's a way to clipped her nails without stressing her...??? icon_question.gif

3rd. question.......
Is it true that we have to provide a large hammock in the middle of the cage ( 3' cage) to prevent joeys from falling and no wodent wheel during the pregnancy....If there is no wheel, how does the male does his exercise activities..??!! blink.gif blink.gif

TQ.

Question 1 - If he is still active and play jump glide around, then it shouldn't be obesity. I ever seen an obesed glider before, he is fat until i cant really know whether it's glider or not, and he sit there all day long eating kuaci..don even wan to move a little... However, 148g and still increasing.. u better monitor closely on the weight, if increase again the u might need to cut down a little bit of the protein given to them.. When they grow elder, the amount of protein needed should be reduce too actually..

Question 2 - You can still clip the nail actually if the glider is very familiar with you.. smile.gif Do it more gently...

Question 3- We always suggest owner to do whatever precaution steps to eliminate the possibility of accident happening... Better safe than sorry.. A large hammock is good, esp when the joey is OOP already..as sometime although they cling on mothers back, but they may jus fall off when the mom jump suddenly..

From what I discussed with Dr Jenny last time, she advised that we removed the wheel when the joey is OOP.. during in pouch period, you can still let them enjoy playing the wheel.. smile.gif

36.8gm for 6months is really underweight... Why don't you give Wombaroo Milk Replacer a try? It's easier to digest for those underaged glider or malnutrition glider.. You will need to syringe feed the glider every 2-3 hours, because her stomach is not fully develop yet, she cant finish the food at a time as how other normal glider does..

Dont really think you should breed this glider, now and future as well, because of her maldevelopment at young age, pregnancy and nursing period will jus bring more harm to the baby and herself...

You can get a female companion for her, but i think now is not the right time.. You should adjust her weight back to normal and make sure she is getting healthier first.. Otherwise, the introduction process of new glider might distress her more...

Thank you Eric138 for your fast reply.

Peanut shared Mia's HPW added with some milk replacer which was recommended by an experience breeder since at that time the Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer was out of stock. My daughter bought two packets from a PET LOVERs Shop for emergency....just in case the mother glider rejects her joeys.

She did made HPW with the combination of 2 packets of High Protein Supplement + 1 packet of Bee Pollen mixed with Sweet Meadow Manuka Honey and 3 eggs....( we used good grades eggs with omega) which was to be shared with the young joeys and the mixture was finished early before my daughter's next visit home.

I did tried to call her on her handphone but couldn't reached her and so....I made the HPW by myself with the combination of 1 packet of High Protein Supplement (which was wrong measurement - I should have used 2 packets instead of 1 packet) + 1 packet of Bee Pollen mixed with Sweet Meadow Manuka Honey and 3 eggs AND since Mia was doing fine lactating her joeys and the milk replacer was about to expire next year...WELL, I thought I should used before it expired and added it into the HPW (since I have read an article in the internet that we can mix it with HPW for lactating mother gliders).

Other than the HPW, I also gave them various types of fruits, green veggies, plus suitable supplements & treats. Live crickets, mealworms and superworms AND even from canned once a while for them.
Fresh drinking water everyday (treated water only) and even freshly squeezed fruit juice for them even for myself also.....

Keeping them as pet have changed my life style.... buying a lot of fruits and vegetables to be kept in the fridge all the time (instead of junk or fast food normally) and eating healthy.

p/s for the 4 feet cage we also provided them cage accessories, toys and also real jungle vines for them to climb up and down the cage., other than 2 wodent wheels.

yes it is good to get a companion for your glider other than human contact coz human cant give 100% attention to them since they are nocturnal animals...

how much are u feeding her..u could try giving her vitamin which contain lysine which help improve her appetite...u could try feeding twice a day like fruits at night and then u can feed slurp early in the morning when the glider is still awake ...or the other way around... ...are u using gliderslurp? or u make your own recipe?

meal worms can be easily get but must feed in controlled amount coz it's high in fat and low in calcium:phosphorus ratio...u can try those small carnivore food too..can give boild/poach/microwave eggs...boild chichken breast meat...
36.8 gram is realy realy under weight..

incresing the food amount must be done gradually...maybe u can try different flavour of slurp..try offering sweet fruits and vegy like water melon/honey dew/apples/carrots of your gliders fav fruit maybe???can dribble with some honey to make her eat more...

u can offer her some yogurt as treats..human yogurt is fine as long as it's low fat..yogurt has good abiotics in yogurt which is goot for their stomach...

getting a companion doesnt mean u have to get a male to accompany a female...u can get another female to acompany her...or u can get neutered male...since your glider is stressed out u dont want to stress her even more with a mate to breed...later unwanted pregnancy then rejected joey and so on...mean while try spending more time with her like carrying her in bonding pouch during the day time...

hope it all goes well for u..and hope the tips are useful

listen to the sifus here... and please make your research thoroughly...
since your fren next door also have sugar glider... i assume you have the basic idea on how to take care of sugar gliders... even dat, u should make more research coz they might be things dat u didnt realize bout taking care of sugar gliders...
if u decided to buy the sugar glider already... please buy from the experienced home breeder... i think the sifus here can recommend a few names... dont buy from those who just want profit and selling it cheap...

Heya SG Sifus.... I was wondering and a little concern. I've bonded with my girl suggie and now I'm thinking is ok that she is all alone in her big cage while I'm at work everyday. You see I get home around 8pm everyday and I'll play with her till maybe 10pm++...then I'm off to bed or to do my stuff.... should i get her a friend ? I dont want her to be lonely.

Erm... There is no answer for this question actually.. There are people who keep single glider for years, and nothing happen.. But there are people who prefer to keep them in pair/group because they are social animal in nature...

I am more on the later group of people, prefer to keep them in pair or get them at least one companion. Keeping single glider esp male glider will lead to higher risk of self mutilation due to loneliness problem because of the hormon secretion and all.. Although yours is a female glider, but getting her a companion actually bring more pro than cons.. We are human, they are glider, no matter how much time and effort we gave them, the bonding between owner glider and between gliders themselves are totally different. For example: we are not nocturnal, it's almost impossible for us to accompany them for whole night when they are active... We cant sleep with them, cuddle with them in a sleeping pouch... we don speak glider language, we cant communicate with them using hissing/crabbing/barking/chattering.. we cant stand on the food bowl and eat together with tthe gliders.. we cant glide and run over the wheel like gliders too...

You see, there are so much thing that we cant do and share with the gliders... And imagine, it must be really fun to have another glider to share the happy moment with ur glider in the cage...

However, my advice for you to get a companion does not mean u must get an opposite sex glider or u must get it asap... Again, i must stress again on the complexity of glider breeding, you only go into breeding when you are mentally/physically/financially/ whatever-lly ready...

If you are not into breeding, then getting a female glider as her companion would be great as you wont have odour/bald spot/marking problem in the future with male glider. Don rush in getting a glider though, look around, research and find a good breeder.. Make sure you get a healthy and fully weaned glider from a reputable breeder...

And before that, make sure u study bout the ways to proper introduce the gliders too yea.. smile.gif

Thanks Yueyi for your advise...appreciate it a lot.....
When i brought her to Dr Yeoh,he already give me some vitamins dat will improve her appetite...mybe i will try to change her suggieslurp's flavour..
r we need to blend the boild chicken n the eggs??or need to add some honey or something?

I'll try to give her human yogurt as your suggest but i already give her 1-2 yogurt drops everyday..is it ok to give it with other human yogurt?
Anyway...tq again for your advise..u make me feel better... smile.gif

Hi Fieqra

I know how you must feel for your pet glider. Try to do one at a time with your glider like you are doing an experiment or research with it. You must be patience....AND.... have to put a lot of effort while you are doing it....do a lot of serving or create your own recipe to get the right ones or two or maybe more for your pet. For example - rice.....you can make porridge, fried rice, ketupat and other more from just 1 thing.....same thing with glider's food.

For example....you can try sprinkle a little bit of Wombaroo Milk Replacer in her suggieslurp and watch and see if she likes or finished it..AND if she does, increase the amount little by little for the next days......After that and since she can eat by herself, make it into 2 portion (separate) .....1 suggieslurp (you can sprinkle WMR a little bit in it) and another 1 by itself, the Milk Replacer (make it in small amount first) and watch her weather she finish it or not. And if she doesn't like it, you can change to other flavour or change it to HPW.... either way......it's alright...and TRY do as the above.....!

Try many times to create new recipes for her appetite and her taste...just like we humans.....we like to have different taste and create new recipes in our food same goes with this incredible little creatures cause gliders have this very awkward in tasting...ESPECIALLY.... regarding with their taste in their food.

These are the things that I do with all my gliders...AND....HPW is their main staple food everyday... other than fruits and veggies...suitable supplements & treats....AND also regular visit to the vets.

Firstly.... try to focus on her appetite and health and once she's back in shape ...MAYBE...you can find a female companion OR a neutered male for her if you are not intend to breed her, yourself..!

I hope these tips will be helpful and hope to hear from you about your glider..!! biggrin.gif

Hi all Sifoos and SG lover,

Im very new in SG world... been flowing the thread for some time, and just got a pair of SG 4 days back.. yet to name them....smile.gif... according to the breeder they are about 10 weeks old....

Been trying to bond with them and the female seems to adopt well, male took some time before adopting but he still Carb's alot everytime try to approach him...

Been feeding them with watermelon and apple for the past few days... planing to get mango and few other fruits later in the evening. Should i introduce HPW or Gliderslurp to them now? If yes where can i obtain them? can any1 PM me where can get them please.

Thinking of feeding them with mealworm during this weekend? Is it recommended to feed them?

Just wondering for the past 2 days every time play with the girl she will pee on me .... is this a common or normal habit? She seems to be fine with me and run and climbs over me etc... open the cage door and put my hands she will jump over and start climbing on me. Is she bonding well with me?also been hand feeding her and she eats on my palm and like to nibble my fingers..

The boy alwayz takes time before climbing over the my hand... and he will be crabbing alot before settling down and climbing over my hand...he spends most of the time sleeping while the girl is active...

Need some advise from the sifoo's here whats sort of diet should i put them on... talking abt yogurt its okay to feed them human yogurt with fruits in it? your advise is highly appreciated.

Sorry for asking all the NOOB questions...

The boy alwayz takes time before climbing over the my hand... and he will be crabbing alot before settling down and climbing over my hand...heĀ  spends most of the time sleeping while the girl is active...

Need some advise from the sifoo's here whats sort of diet should i put them on... talking abt yogurt its okay to feed them human yogurt with fruits in it? your advise is highly appreciated.

Sorry for asking all the NOOB questions...

i am not a pro but i will tell wad i noe bout gliders biggrin.gif

crabbing is normal for the first few weeks as they are still not familiar with u yet but after sometime u will find the crabbing lesser and lesser as u try to take them out of the pouch...daily supply of fresh fruits is always the best.. try refer the 1st page or HERE for the information bout nutrition. It takes some time to understand bout their diet though, so be patient and never give up...As whether HPW or GliderSLURP is up to the owner

u can find HPW Diet recipe HERE
As for GLiderSLURP u can get it from crazymouse_yyh

mealworm, superworm, dubia roaches or cricket are the insects dat u can feed them with, as for me i feed my gliders with mealworm or superworm...but do bare in mind about the calcium_phosphorous_ratios is 2:1

good progress u hv there, he is curious about u but at the same time he is still not familiar with u LoL...at least they still climb to ur hand biggrin.gif
u can feed them human yogurt of course but a low fat one...

Oh for the pee and poop part yea...gliders hv no bowel control, they will pee and poop wherever they want to anywhr anytime they wan..so jz monitor ur glider and as u get more familiar with them they u will noe when they nid to do their business brows.gif hv a great time with ur glider icon_rolleyes.gif

Piggyzai - Thanx for the warm welcome and the reply .... looking forward to learn more from you guys here... its really exciting to be with SG,

They just tend to sleep most of the time and when im back in the evening or night have to wake them up and then only manage to play with them... even from 3 am to 7 am they are alwayz sleeping... trying to learn more on their behaviors...

Is it okay to leave them sleep in the coconut shell all the time? yet to get a sleeping pouch there is a coconut shell hanging and then tend to sleep in it all the time? read somewhere the fur might turn brown if they sleep in it all the time... is it true?
