Autofocus Problem on Entry Level Body.

Many have ask about the problem of AF(AutoFocus) on entry level body, the problem here is whether the camera body has build-in AF motor or not. And unfortunately, for Nikon's entry level body, they don't come with build-in AF motor, hence in order to autofocus, the camera have to rely on the lens. While the lens must have its build-in AF motor, since the absent of the body AF motor. So, in Nikon's line-up, we have the "AF-S" and "AF-I" lens which has build-in SWM motor for the lens. Therefore, user of the entry level body, will have to look for lenses which has build-in AF motor in order for the autofocus function, else, the user will have to end up doing manual focusing.

While for the "AF" or "AF-D" lens from Nikon, it still can be mount on the camera, but since there is no AF motor in both the camera body as well as the lens, then the user have to work on for manual focus ONLY. On the other hand, the medium to high end of Nikon camera body will come with build-in AF motor, hence it allow the user to achieve autofocus through the camera's motor rotating the lens' element.
Below is for illustration,

Body without build-in AF motor.

depends on what you wanna use your camera for, you need to decide what you wanna use it to shoot before deciding lens. we can't make the decision for you, or else we'll just simply say go for 70-200 f/2.8 VR laugh.gif

For myself I think I need a better zoom lens compared to my crappy 1855...
But sometimes I also want poisonous bokeh lens for portraits... *Coz 1855 can't give me nice bokeh, all of them are kinda harsh.

depends on what you wanna use your camera for, you need to decide what you wanna use it to shoot before deciding lens. we can't make the decision for you, or else we'll just simply say go for 70-200 f/2.8 VR laugh.gif

good point...and i would suggest him 200mm F2.8 tongue.gif

But sometimes I also want poisonous bokeh lens for portraits... *Coz 1855 can't give me nice bokeh, all of them are kinda harsh.

If wan budget portrait lens, can get 55-200mm, my friend is using that for portraits, although not as dreamy as f2.8 but better than your kit lens. If the range is too far for you, maybe 50mm f1.4 or 50mm f1.8..

Too bad the 85mms are AF-D.

All nikon models can use 50mm f1.8D, just that below D90 cannot AF with this lens, need manual focus.

ongdandy, who says Sigmalux 50mm f1.4 is cheap doh.gif it's more expensive that the nikon, around 2.1k.

Some people prefer sigma 50mm f1.4 because it has bigger front element than nikon's (bigger filter size) and less CA or distortion i forgot. General_nic owns this awesome lens =D

Nikon is better, in SOME cases, not ALL. Don't keep misleading ppl by one liners >.<

Oh yea sigmalux's TANK build quality, nikon can't win with its 50mm f1.4G! I personally played it, woah!

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 versus the Nikon f/1.4D. Frankly, I used both on the D3 before. I can't exactly see the differences...

Oh right, and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 was sold already, due to focusing issue with my friend's D3.

Seldom heard about the sigma, but shashinki is selling at RM1250. I checked and this sigma has HSM OS, similar to nikon's SWM VR. I think it might be better than nikon's (judging at the price alone) but you need to read more reviews and try personally on that.

But I will suggest the cheaper Nikon =D

Of course F2.8 is better lo sad.gif But poor students like me how to earn freaking 7k!
Even if I can earn 7k during holidays, I also feel bad for buying such expensive things at this age, my family is poor also =X

faster more silent than 18-55

Yes... haha those AF-D really shine with a good high end body! No wonder some of the pros don't want to change to the AF-S. Really fast the D3s twist the 50mm f/1.4D. Yesterday went to shoot event friend brought his new D3s, 14.7k!!! Arghhh, but lucky I'm immune.. gonna wait for D700's replacement xD.

No, this is shot with 70-200. 16-35 shots will post later on biggrin.gif. Cause initially planned to use 70-200, but the place so tight and I keep getting blocked by my friends, made me pissed off and change to 16-35 LOL.

Before that using 16-35 for stage show, then wanted to use 70-200 for portrait mah haha.

Just bought a 35mm f1.8 for RM850. Not sure if it's considered cheap or not... sigh...

Hope that it'll complement my existing 18-55 and 55-200 well tongue.gif

But surprisingly, I haven't gotten myself any flashgun yet hahahahaha that will come later I hope smile.gif

Cheers

16-35 f/4 is sharp. But usually can't see much cause everything is so wide. The 70-200 is of course better. The 16-35 focuses slower too =/. Too used to 70-200's speedy focusing.

I think you really should master your D3k first before thinking of buying D300s sweat.gif
Both pics looks very soft and weird WB. perhaps it's the effect of noise reduction PP that's why it's smooth. BTW no need say "advanced flash", sounds inappropriate to me =D

lol vivid mode is not WB. WB is tungsten, daylight, shade, flash, etc etc..

and you SHOULD photoshop a photo to make it look nicer, e.g. remove noise, change the WB, exposure, etc.

Depending how fast your object is, set your shutter than set the aperture to balance the exposure. ISO I usually do at 200 ISO.

hi all sifus..wanna ask your opinion a bit..
was thinking to get D5000 soon but a bit confuse with d lense kit..

which one shud i go for?
1. D5000 + 18-55 + 55-200 + freebies (USD900 ~ RM2.9k)
2. D5000 + 18-200 + freebies (USD1390 ~ RM4490)
3. D5000 + 18-105 + freebies (USD950 ~ RM3060)
4. D5000 + 18-55 + freebies (USD750 ~ RM2420)

btw, i'm getting my very 1st dslr soon in us..that's y i put US price..
my frens suggest to get lense that can zoom a lot so that later i will not regret..
as i'm studying in us, i'll be using the camera for general everyday shot, no specific shot (doesn't decide yet)..
my budget actually can afford basic 18-55 kit lens...to actually opt for choice no 1-3, i need to work part time 1st then can afford to buy..
can any sifus help me tongue.gif

*oh btw, i've wait months edi to get my very 1st dslr* biggrin.gif

Shutter Speed - 1/60 and 1/50
ISO - 3200

i didn't use advanced flash..by that time it was too late because the show almost end so i try to test my 70-300mm lens and stand far away from the stage.  sweat.gif

Both pics looks very soft and weird WB. perhaps it's the effect of noise reduction PP that's why it's smooth. BTW no need say "advanced flash", sounds inappropriate to me =D

hi all sifus..wanna ask your opinion a bit..
was thinking to get D5000 soon but a bit confuse with d lense kit..

which one shud i go for?

*oh btw, i've wait months edi to get my very 1st dslr* biggrin.gif

if u hv budget up to D90, might as well get D90.

you can try to manual focus, but even on stationary objects, you can't get a sharp focus all the time. and it'll take longer for you to find the focus point compared to your camera doing it for you tongue.gif so, if you wanna let friends and family wait while you find a focus point, it's ok to go for d5k laugh.gif

well...since u will go for event like graduation day...i advise u dont use manual focus...because u would certainly make some ppl waiting for u to focus...since that day is their big day...i doubt they will keep waiting for u to manual focus...

since ur interested in off camera flash mode, let me lay down what limitation that D5000 has in flash:
- no Auto FP high speed sync
- no built in flash commander

I think the most D5k can go is 1/200s for the flash syn, if not mistaken.... so if u hav shutter speed above that, the flash wont b able to cope up with it.

wooo... i got 2 words for u. "Classic Fella". y ur classic fella is that:
- u cant take C&C. (pls try photomalaysia & do see what comments u will get)
- ur not humble. if u dunno just say dunno. dont try to b smart@$$ with ur $hitty comments & mislead ppl. theres section for u if u just wanna spam. go KOPITIAM. ppl at kopitiam surely like to pawn a person like u.
- stop being hardware oriented. heck, by all means, just buy whatever ur wallet can get. but if u cant apply the technics & arts, might as well flush ur gadget down the toilet bowl. & pls bear in mind that its not bout quality of equipment but its always bout quality of a person.

to be honest, im not a pro. i just got my dslr few months back. im here cos i wanna learn. in order to learn i understand that i must hv d important core values eg HUMBLE. i think u hv attitude problem or worst case, untreated bipolar disorder. sorry for my harsh words but i think u deserved it. yep, i give u that.

equip, lens might affect sharpness but if you don't pixel peep most lens will do the job, just that some better lenses will do the job even better.
Exposure and weather not really, during a bright day you don't really need tripod.

Which mode you're using? If A/P mode, in indoor you use F/8 the camera will use a very slow shutter, so your hand cannot compensate for the slow speed and eventually will result in blurry photos. Indoor f/8.0 need flash or pump ISO in order to get reasonable shutter speed, no other way =D

AF is important , MF mostly produce non sharp image

you can try it out at shop

with d5000 then turn off the AF of the lens.

Can try to hang the dslr bag on the tripod to make it more stable thumbup.gif but scared that it may be too much weight for tripod to handle also....haha

I want a tripod for landscapes and HDRs......but not often used anyway....so most prob go with a cheap one first hmm.gif

^ I went with Victory 4001 I think. Not too bad if your setup is not heavy.

But then I use D90 + Grip + 18-105 already not very solid -.-... but compared to most cap ayam brand this tripod is considered solid.

wooo... i got 2 words for u.
& pls bear in mind that its not bout quality of equipment but its always bout quality of a person.

to be honest, im not a pro. i just got my dslr few months back. im here cos i wanna learn. in order to learn i understand that i must hv d important core values eg HUMBLE. i think u hv attitude problem or worst case, untreated bipolar disorder. sorry for my harsh words but i think u deserved it. yep, i give u that.

hei sorry man.. i m not young anymore..i post my picture here to give some comment/ teach me what i can do to get a better picture. then i try to take again. is not like zelleonheart comments that make me no confident to take picture. if you say my picture too blur, too high iso, too noisy, etc etc.. then you just tell/teach me what i can do to get a better picture..YES i' m still new to it..still learning on how to use manual mode. YES i have a bit of attitude problem and i' m trying to learn how to be humble with everyone.

I think the only difference is the warranty. For local sets, you can claim warranty or upgrade firmware at Schmidt Marketing malaysia (the distributor) but for overseas sets you can't.

Yaya, main reason to bring tripod there is the sunset! Sunset+couple.....fuahhhhh wub.gif But haven't planned anything yet also, just got the air tickets n hotel only, bought it from matta fair package thingy.....so tours have to plan ourself....good also, no need rush rush

Bracketing handheld nvm, still got realign function in photomatix icon_rolleyes.gif

By the way, were the pics taken using 55-200? Am in the middle of nego-ing with a seller for it....wanna find out how's the performance.....

Oh yea guys, something to ask here =)
I'm new to bracketing mode, few days ago i tried using bracketing in A mode, it should come out with 3 pictures, with one underexposed, one normal exposed and one overexposed right? But I got 2 normal exposed, one over.

The -2EV looks just the same with 0 EV =X I usually use M mode but Manual can't bracket. is this normal?

Mine included in package.... I got my package really really cheap la from matta, that's y I took tour, RM600 5D4N 3 meals included.... when I walk into my hotel (Best Western Kuta) den i notice it cost 750,000 rupiah per night, which is nearly 300rm/night.

The bird was shot handheld without tripod, u don need tripod with sufficient lighting, I think it's around 150mm, not 200mm. With VR, it wont b a prob, if u use those tamron without VC, it will kill u... tongue.gif

i can bracket with M mode and always do so. just need to set the ISO, aperture and shutter speed, then when you take the bracket shots, it'll adjust shutter speed accordingly. maybe in A mode, bracketing cancels out the auto shutter setting? tongue.gif just guessing here.

Owh in M mode it will adjust shutter speed when bracketing? Great, will try that later, cuz I'm not really confident with A mode =X

Yeah, i get that as well.....sometimes i get only 2 shots instead of 3. But i find that, sometimes -2EV, u'll only get 2 shots but using -1EV at the same spot, u'd get 3 shots. I think it's probably something to do with underexposing it too much and it becomes too dark to snap a pic...u know how sometimes there is a notice that 'Subject too dark' when in A mode and it doesn't let u take a pic, maybe the -2EV emulates that.....just noob guess.....haha

Read a nifty trick somewhere in a magazine before that after u set to +-2EV bracketing, set teh exposure value to +-1 also.....and u'll get +-3EV at both ends......so it's total range of +-3EV and u get 5 shots, 1 extra on each end of the exposure

Lol, i haven't tried yet but theoretically it really does work......u'd have 2 sets of bracketed photos using the method. 1 set -3ev until +2ev and another set -2EV until +3EV so end to end it's -3EV to +3ev. Those duplicates in the middle ones, just pick either one lah laugh.gif

A fren of mine is using PTGui to combine the panorama and he's using handheld....looks good! rclxms.gif

can, but use the widest aperture, if 300mm @ f/5.6 and boost up ISO according to the lighting. shutter speed can range from 1/100 - 1/500

you can set the WB to auto, but shoot in RAW. then adjust the WB in lightroom, that's what i do.

*
M mode can do braketing, cam set EV +- from d shutter speed u set

Heya, quick question.....what do you guys normally check for when getting a used lens? I'll probably be getting one real soon and am trying not to get conned...haha

So any tips and pointers? I only know i need to check the lens glass for scratches/fungus, motor/focusing sounds and picture quality when shooting a pic......any other things need to check? Thanks a bunch!

turn the focus ring and zoom ring see will it have weird sound or too loose or not. And also see the outer appearance also. If it looks new and good and no scratch/fungus, focus ok and rings all ok, the lens should work well. Check for warranty card and the box, accessories (lens hood/lens cap/uv filter etc)

Bring a LED torchlight, open both the cap, slide open the aperture blade using ur finger n shine the torch through the front see whether any fungus growth or not. Check to receipt for the stated lens age if u scared get conned for more expensive price. But as long as the lens no fungus and no focusing problem, then it wont b a problem la.....

Cleaning needs money even its under warranty... but beware... they dun have a fixed price for cleaning process....
They might say... there's dust in ur body... which requires to dissemble the whole thing to clean.

lenspen i already bought but that 1 for lens only lor..not for sensor@body

n lenspen only suitable cleaning external glass only.. not internal...
my lens got lil dust also but very2 tiny n not effect pic but i would want clean as possible and need service since nvr service it since bought.

i used blower many time to blow the dust at my sensor also cnnot remove the dust.

so, my only solution go service at service center since my warranty expired next months.
but i didnt know izit free or not. so asking here 1st l before go service center

i search at other forum and they said nikon only give free cleaning until Feb 2010 only..
cos after that 3rd party company will take care of the cleaning and will charge rm20 for under warranty and rm80 for out of warranty.

i bought my nikon d3000 few months ago and now i wanted to upgrade my gadgets.

so firstly, im thinking to buy a flashgun and also 35mm(50mm cant fit for d3000 cause no built in motor for d3000)
but now, im not sure which one i should go for first. the flashgun or 35mm?

and for the flash, im considering the nissin Di622 or Sunpak PZ42X. can anyone give me some opinion about it? or is there any other choices.. budget not more than 600 for the flash

i try my fren sunpak pz42x the other day but on my device the flash was not working properly. my fren was using 1000d
and i don know why that problem happened, he said it should be no problem

i need some help from the experts. thanks much

firstly, you can't mix canon and nikon products, his eos 1000d is not compatible with your nikon d3000. i think it's best to get nissin di622 first. then only go for 35mm if you have the budget.

the sunpak can work on both mount ?

i thought it should have nikon mount or canon mount .

imo , it depend on you , if you are poisoned with the bokeh , go for 35mm first.

i'm not very sure about sunpak, but i think it's a manual flash. nissin has iTTL, means it'll adjust the flash power automatically with info TTL - Through The Lens.
