what software u all use to check hdd health? im using crystaldiskinfo, it shows two of my hdd is good, however for my external hdd, the status was caution with a yellow warning color on the background, it highlight the reallocated sectors count.. what does that mean? my external will die soon is it?
*
"Reallocated sectors count" in smart status? time to buy new HDD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.#Kn...R.T._attributes

The SMART status may report wrongly, like my WD green 1TB, the HDD died but the HDtune still report it as in good condition.
If your HDD is acting weird like Copy/write/transfter Rate slow like slowpoke, eg speed down to unbelievable 100kbps, chance are your HDD have bad sector or going to die soon, cause windows keep trying to retrieve the data from bad sector.

I think its depend on luck bah, buy newer batch or buy 1 pair and run on RAID1 if i afraid of data loss.
i never trust any hdd brand except WD sweat.gif

IT shouldnt be lag unless you connect to USB1.1, USB2.0 sustain transfer rate is more than enough to play compressed 1080p video, or if the video you are playing is uncompressed Bluray rip sweat.gif
If you dont trust the SMART status, the windows log will show alot of NTFS or Disk error if your hdd really have problems.

Not necessarily. I have one WD10EADS with a Reallocated Sector Count of 1 and it has not increased in months nor given me any problems. I think the recommendation is that as long as the RSC count is stable, then the HDD should be fine to use.

Same here, having an external HDD which has 1 RSC but still can be used. Maybe as long as it is not bad sector? Hmmm...

The RSC is approximately the number of bad sectors on the drive, since the RSC only happens when the drive remaps bad sectors to spare sectors to transparently "heal" a drive.

Having a bad sector by itself doesn't mean the HDD is on its deathbed. It is when the bad sector count or the RSC keeps on increasing in a short period or the HDD has exhausted its spare sectors then you probably do need to replace the HDD. But it sure is a lot easier to RMA a HDD if it does have bad sectors.

Am planning to get a new external harddisk 1TB. Can anyone tell me which is more recommended among the 3 brands here?

1. WD Passport USB3.0
2. Buffalo Mini station
3. Seagate Expansion

In terms of price, I believe they are similar but I'm most concern about reliability. My Imation Apollo died on me, and Imation Venus is a little problematic now.

Seagate GoFlex 500GB USB3.0 Kit (2.5")
Since this is a GoFlex, you have the propriety B side cable, the A side still the standard USB 3.0.

I have an external seagate 1tb which I have for about a year now. Pretty fine and it has 5 years warranty- the most compared to others. Anyway, I don't believe in any brand more reliable than others, it boils down whether you a good/ bad one. nod.gif

As usual, use HD tune to check the HDD smart status, windows event viewer can tell you if your HDD have problem too.(and chkdsk utility will nag you to check the HDD before enter the windows).

I have a WD Blue 500GB, it doesnt work anymore has skipping sound noises as in it tries to start up then fail (keep repeating this process)

I have done the whole RMA thing on WD website, but need to send to sg for warranty purpose which doesnt make sense to me as theres a wd factory here. Anyone here has similar problems ?

I saw in the C-zone price list and they had a 2TB Seagate 7200rpm drive SATA 6.0 just below the Samsung F4. Anybody bought this?

I checked and Seagate only had this 7200rpm 2TB drive - ST32000641AS
