2 of my WD GREEN 1TB starting to have bad sectors shakehead.gif
both of them are the First batch of 1TB 64mb cache + Advanced Format Drive. for some reason one of the drive's transfer rate is uber slow(133kbps!) if move a folder contain large amount of files, but moving them one by one seems normal sweat.gif

my other older WD drive(320/500GB) are still strong and healthy sweat.gif

just bought WD BLACK 2TB 2002EAFX... for backup only, f****** expensive shakehead.gif

what software u all use to check hdd health? im using crystaldiskinfo, it shows two of my hdd is good, however for my external hdd, the status was caution with a yellow warning color on the background, it highlight the reallocated sectors count.. what does that mean? my external will die soon is it?
*
"Reallocated sectors count" in smart status? time to buy new HDD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.#Kn...R.T._attributes

The SMART status may report wrongly, like my WD green 1TB, the HDD died but the HDtune still report it as in good condition.
If your HDD is acting weird like Copy/write/transfter Rate slow like slowpoke, eg speed down to unbelievable 100kbps, chance are your HDD have bad sector or going to die soon, cause windows keep trying to retrieve the data from bad sector.

is it recommended to go for 1tb spinpoint f3 now??..i heard read many users are getting bad ones
*
I think its depend on luck bah, buy newer batch or buy 1 pair and run on RAID1 if i afraid of data loss.
i never trust any hdd brand except WD sweat.gif

the transfer rate i think quite normal, however, when i play movie direct from the external, there were lag when playin the movie..
*
IT shouldnt be lag unless you connect to USB1.1, USB2.0 sustain transfer rate is more than enough to play compressed 1080p video, or if the video you are playing is uncompressed Bluray rip sweat.gif
If you dont trust the SMART status, the windows log will show alot of NTFS or Disk error if your hdd really have problems.

last year its the samsung spinpoint f3 is the choice for purchasing new HD.
bought 1, and no problem so far.

but my WD black, nearly 2 years now im guessing its dying now, can hear the ticking sound sometime.

so any idea which HD is bang for bucks? looking for 1tb hd.
*
Bang for buck still the samsung one sweat.gif
WD black is noisy HDD isnt it? i can hear the spinning noise very clearly even i have 2 SFLEX G + noctua p14 running at full blast doh.gif
As usual, use HD tune to check the HDD smart status, windows event viewer can tell you if your HDD have problem too.(and chkdsk utility will nag you to check the HDD before enter the windows).

nice guide. biggrin.gif
but got some high end casing like silverstone raven,
they place hdd vertically. sad.gif
*
HDD all use FDB iirc, Fluid Dynamic Bearing, it wont ware out easily no matter how you place the HDD.
The FD bearing will last very long compare to Ball bearing (noisy and average MTBF), sleeve bearing (worst but cheaper to produce, noisy when going to wear out, MTBF very short)
