better be safe than sorry, might catch fire you never know LOL (there was once a Dell battery which was recalled due to being fire hazard! this is rather less documented..)

Does Dell work over the weekend?

If not, then I'm going to run some games on it over the weekend to see whether my SXPS16 got any issue or not.

Been reading a lot of complaints about throttling from notebookreview.com so wanna test my unit as well.

Can't believe this ... only own it for 1 day.

I have been very eager to get the XPS16. A month back, the Dell coupon still worked for this unit but the coupon offer for XPS16 has stopped. Very sad cry.gif .

On top of that, I call Dell hotline today and the sales agent told me that there will be no further discount but will throw in a laptop bag. thumbup.gif

Additionally, OEM Windows 7 64-bit DVD will not be provided and we need to do a system backup of 2 DVD before we ever format the machine. doh.gif Did you guys went through all this trouble? rclxub.gif

Resolved my adapter heat problem after on the line with Dell support for two hours.

Some more they remind me to upgrade my Microsoft Office to 2010 version which I'm doing now.

why say so? 130w need to upgrade bios and 90w dont need to?
i dont give a damn about the backup and went for a clean reformat of windows 7 HP 32bit.. and now im stucked with the product key part.. that sucks.. theres nothing to backup for a new machine..
*
They meant backup the system state, not content. Your cd key of 64bit will not work for the 32 bit OS u installed, i think.

really??...so, is it not recommended to put screen protector...i'm planning to buy it this week...

just want to ask screen protector can be cut???...as you all know sxps screen area is not like the usual laptop one where they have like monitor border one and the screen is inside it..sxps is flat edge to edge one..so i'm planning to buy larger laptop screen protector and cut-fit it onto the whole screen area

For those that have hard finger when playing game, I recommend to use USB Keyboard..

I also feel wanted to extend my laptop warranty.. I bought it from some retail shop outside, not DELL.. so only have 1 year warranty..

guys..wanna ask..microsoft office can be installed in 64bit w7 without specific cd for 64bit one???...what i mean, can i use the usual cd i install office on a 32bit platform and install it on 64bit one...

I don't have any problem with mine. Just right click and run as administrator. I don't know if this is impossible, but I'm confident and very sure that my installer is for 32 bit version.

anyone monitor the price of dell studio xps 16 (1640) RM2999? Let me know if the price drops or hardware specs upgraded. Dell SA told me got price protection for 2 weeks from the day i receive the item. Meaning if price drop or hardware specs upgrade, i will receive rebate, lol

Actually im also skeptical bout the 3 year warranty. Quite a bit of money. It covers when something happens. If nothing, then quite wasted.

Added on July 3, 2010, 6:05 amby the way, does anyone feel the dell supplied powercord is too short? most of the time my adapter brick will hang in the air when plug into the wall socket. i had just compared with another acer's powercord, it is double the length (4ft) of the dell's (2ft). however, the acer (typical) powercord connector is not angled and longer so not possible to wrap around the adapter brick

Should I get:

XPS 16 i5 450M + ATi HD5730 15/16inch 1080p, RM4102

XPS 16 i5 520M + ATi HD5730 15/16inch 1080p, RM4341

Worried about heat.

Otherwise the lesser options below:

Sony Vaio EA16, i5 520M + ATi HD5650 14 inch 720p, RM3999

Asus A42Jv, i5 450M + Nvidia GT 335M 14 inch 720p, RM2950

(Very smart. Cut price by 100 but cut rebate of 150 to 100. LOL)

Added on July 4, 2010, 6:51 pmjust found that the dell product warranty starts on the date the order was confirmed, not when the date when the item was delivered, anyone discover the same thing? if this is really true, i dont think it is fair coz when the order was confirm, i dont "hold" the item yet, it was only 2 weeks after that when the item deliverd -.-

Can't confirm this warranty matter with you...
But as for my case, I bought it on computer shop, not directly on DELL..
So when i bought it, I didn't care bout the warranty at the time.. after few week only, i realised, Then only i start register my account + service tag..
So my warranty got delay a little from the day i bought.. icon_rolleyes.gif
But the bad case is 1 year warranty only...
I need to extend warranty after sales, which is more expensive.

2)about the Studio XPS 16, there is 4 different model, from c2d up to core i7

i will use the laptop for movies(mostly rmvb lah, HD video from torrent, and PPS)

4)for gaming section, since i had a desktop that still can handle the new games with mid/low settings, i think i wont use the laptop for heavy gaming lah
about the GPU, i know that 5730 has better peformance than 4670
but how's the temperature for 4670?
any heat issue for this laptop?
because i read some review said that the old laptop equipped with 3870 one got wor(correct me if i'm wrong)
during normal usage like surfing webpages, watch movies, how's the temperature for the laptop?
during idle leh?

5)does the touch pad & keyboard will become hot and uncomfortable during normal usage? or it just nice and comfortable to put our hand on it?
how about during gaming mode?

6)about the warranty,
i'm in sabah, so it should be no problem for the technician come to my home to fix my laptop right?
or it will take more time for the technician come to my home compared to peninsular malaysia?

The 16'' would have smaller border/bezel
Edge to edge means? sweat.gif
Edge to edge means there's another extra layer of plastic on the screen, its flush without border/bezel, like the screen on macbook pro...
Edge to Edge,RGBLED,WUXGA WLED, which one is better?
RGBLED is supposed to have better colour output, though this is a subjective matter

At least with a proper airflow, it won't overheat until shutdown laugh.gif
The touchpad area is hot, though the heat source is the southbridge which is just under the touchpad...

Dell prices change dynamically, and so do the models and specs.

before you know it, the 5730 is up for upgrade (btw other countries had it long ago lol and some even had it removed).

I have owned a Dell Latitude of the Intel M era and although it is really crappy now (recently focked it up) it lasted a good 4/5 years.

Of course, I have concerns before I buy an XPS 16.

If the price is RM4100, after adding warranty and maybe 9 cell, get RM400 discount is not bad. Can get more? smile.gif

Anyone care to share their XPS experiences?

want to ask one question lagi
does Dell's warranty covered dead pixels for the monitor?
just wonder

kinda worry about it, since last time i bought my desktop with monitor
the monitor got 1 red dead pixel
then the 2nd day terus go to the shop request for a new unit..
fortunately the shop exchange a new monitor for me and tested it for me on the spot to make sure it doesn't have dead pixel

Whoa ur cooler has USB ports? Is it like some sort of dock? Or a hub.
When I used a hub only 1 out of 4 USB ports work. The rest just can't connect/too weak.

BTW how do we reformat the laptop, without a Win7 CD (which I think is not provided for XPS 16 / 1647)?

What you mean by tat logon screen??
Is there any..??
I bought mine XPS dont have any special logon screen also...
By the way you can change the logon screen manually by following these steps: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-change-windows-7-logon-screen-easily-without-using-hacks-tools/
So actually, those who still has the picture file can copy from the folder and post here for those who want it..

quick question, what is the method to restore dell xps 16 OS and software to the factory setting? use dell system restore? or install from the DVD? i got the dvd and also found restore partition in my computer. Altot i got those DVD, i still receive a paper note that advised me to backup my restore partition, this is confusing

Check the icon tray (bottom right) have you seen any Dell Touchpad Icon? If you didn't see it, I believe you didn't install it yet. So check your Dell Resource Cd, you can find Synaptics Touch Pad driver under Input Driver column. or you can download at Dell website under the Input device driver section. thumbup.gif

Though only works for C2D,
For those with half multiplier like P8700, the undervolt would cost ~100MHz since RMClock don't support it, e.g for P8700 it would be running@2.4Ghz instead of 2.5GHz...

Whoa, 19C, lower than room temp.

Can I ask some questions:

Is it always GDDR3 for ATI GFX card memory? Or is it usually just DDR3.

Its GDDR3, the "G" refers to Graphic card memory....
DDR3 is for the system ram....

and the cpu temp reading is off, not 19C anymore...
