Should I get:

XPS 16 i5 450M + ATi HD5730 15/16inch 1080p, RM4102

XPS 16 i5 520M + ATi HD5730 15/16inch 1080p, RM4341

Worried about heat.

Otherwise the lesser options below:

Sony Vaio EA16, i5 520M + ATi HD5650 14 inch 720p, RM3999

Asus A42Jv, i5 450M + Nvidia GT 335M 14 inch 720p, RM2950

(Very smart. Cut price by 100 but cut rebate of 150 to 100. LOL)

Dell prices change dynamically, and so do the models and specs.

before you know it, the 5730 is up for upgrade (btw other countries had it long ago lol and some even had it removed).

I have owned a Dell Latitude of the Intel M era and although it is really crappy now (recently focked it up) it lasted a good 4/5 years.

Of course, I have concerns before I buy an XPS 16.

If the price is RM4100, after adding warranty and maybe 9 cell, get RM400 discount is not bad. Can get more? smile.gif

Anyone care to share their XPS experiences?

Whoa ur cooler has USB ports? Is it like some sort of dock? Or a hub.
When I used a hub only 1 out of 4 USB ports work. The rest just can't connect/too weak.

BTW how do we reformat the laptop, without a Win7 CD (which I think is not provided for XPS 16 / 1647)?

Whoa, 19C, lower than room temp.

Can I ask some questions:

Is it always GDDR3 for ATI GFX card memory? Or is it usually just DDR3.

My experience at the PC fair:

Bought a Lenovo Y550P (which I had to wait more than 2 months for).

No discount. No promotion. Paid extra for warranty.

Only thing is a shiity plastic cooler (RM5 kind), cheap mouse (scroll broke), USB hub (doesn't work), keyboard protector/cover (adhesive wore off - thanks to Lenovo actually - if you remove it then it doesn't stick and its practically useless), LCD screen cleaner fluid (random), headphones (weird, the wires are very screwed up in design, something I've never seen before).

I was REALLY happy with the laptop. Until the 3rd day. Then all the problems happened and I regretted buying it.
I still do. That was Jan/Feb 2010.

Refund - trying - will fix it.

Well when I see these promotions at PC fair you are all getting, I guess it is stupid of the customer to not look for them, and to just impulsively buy a laptop just because of its specs (I did find out about it beforehand but couldn't check it out physically or anything).

Besides, they aren't gonna give you any free upgrade from 4GB RAM. But they didn't give any warranty promotions either.

Can anybody post screenshots of their Dell Studio XPS 16 (1647, etc) temperatures (core and graphics etc).

I am thinking of buying a Dell XPS 16 with HD 5730. Should I get i5-450 or i5-520?

Otherwise should I get Sony 14inch 1366x766 i5-520 HD5650?

THANKS

Erm guys. I saw that Dell laptops come with Windows RE CD.

Is that enough for one to reinstall his new laptop? Don't we need the Windows 7 Installation CD?

I thought WinRE only allows repair and limited backup recovery.

I prefer the traditional System Wipe where we get a fresh system of Windows. How will I go about doing this?

So ivan92 how much was the final price for your XPS 16 after discount? All they gave was antivirus?

I am thinking of buying the XPS 16, waiting to see if it is worth it. Advantage is Full HD of course, which other laptops don't have.
And the HD 5730 which is better than Nvidia GT 240M and GT 335M.

Having used 3 new laptops in the past 6 months I have become somewhat scared.

Hmm if you upgraded to HD 5730 and 2yr + 1yr CompleteCover Warranty it does not look like you were given RM200 discount Unless you count the AntiVirus.

Guys (especially Dell XPS 16 users and Windows 7 users)

I'd like to ask a Noob question.

Ok so when you want to remove your USB hard drive or thumbdrive you click the small green icon at the bottom right of the screen.

How long does it take for the small grey list of USB devices plugged in
(the one that says Eject/Remove Drive F: etc)?

On my laptop and my friend's laptop it took around 8-10 seconds! Why is it so long? Shouldn't it be instant?

I know this is not necessary (ejecting this way) I just want to know what's going on.

THANKS smile.gif

Please post up some screenshots ^^

CPU and GPU at idle, idle after some time (an hour or two), during usage (movies, web browser, media, wifi), and during gaming at high res.

We would really appreciate these.

Right. Here are some I found useful (and free I believe).

(i) CoreTemp. Switch it on, you can minimise (goes to the tray), but don't shut it or X it. Then it'll record the max temps reached during the period you kept it on.

(ii) HardWareMonitor. (iii) RealTemp

So there you go. They're low load, free, and don't even need installs.

XPS 16 (1647) i5 , ATI Mobility Radeon users, please give us some reviews and screenshots (idle after extended use, browsing, during gaming) using CoreTemp etc.

THANK YOU.

I am deciding between Asus 14inch 1366x768 and this Dell. But the Dell is so expensive...

Damn, nice one Fantasia and Kevin.
Please continue to show us screens smile.gif

So I guess this answers a lot of our questions? Granted the C2D may not get as hot as the Ci5 but based on the GPU temps and CPU temps we can say there is no overheating problem on those units... and hopefully others.

One of the main concerns is overheating. Like many people have said, it is a situation where some get it and some don't. However if you do "get it" I suppose it just takes a call to Dell to get it sorted out.

How about gaming at a higher def, and then taking the Temp mid-game? Possible that this will raise temps.

So far temps looking good. But a lot of XPS reviews show high temp so that's why I (and others) are a little concerned, albeit this is understandable.

My i7-720QM (not a Dell) temps at 1366x768 High in Borderlands (2009).

Oh also I don't know how these sensors work cause different people will have different TJMax values... and also some programs will give readings that are 2/3C higher. So yeah it kinda reached boiling point.

I know its not XPS 16, but this is in comparison (because I am gonna buy the XPS 16 which has i5 and 5730 in 15.6inches).

Less than an hour of gaming. CPU and GPU. 87C Nvidia!

The Dell doesn't really want to give much discount, at RM4341 with no bag, only basic 1yr warranty (i5-520 + HD 5730).

Guys, does Dell give you the Windows 7 OS Installation CD (not the Recovery CD)?
Also it comes with a mouse right?

Ahh some do and some don't. OK I'll make sure I ask and get it. Otherwise GG lah. I mean the license we buy is useless if it can't be used. Definitely want to reinstall the OS. And if each CD only corresponds to one key, then it should be safe. Except those hackers who make pirated ones.

Aww too bad about the mouse thing. I've always liked mice made by Dell: sturdy and durable, precise, accurate, high quality, simple yet stylish. I feel they are the best computer manufacturers' mice. Of course, there are lots of RM20 mice that perform 200x better than RM70 or RM100 mice. Depends.

Studio XPS 1647 users, just wanted to ask, what keyboard functions are there on the Dell Studio XPS 16?

Are there Functions for the Webcam, Switching On and Off the Display etc?

I like the touch buttons smile.gif
