since we're at it, if you guys have to recommend sticking with one light modifier, which one would it be? The softbox? Or a shoot-thru umbrella? Or a 5-in-1 reflector and use the translucent panel as a softbox/shoot-thru material?

Also, is there any place that gives out free gel samplers?

I'm still looking for a Rosco Swatchbook in Malaysia.
Its prohibitively expensive to send one here even though the sample itself is pretty cheap. sad.gif

Really? That's the best reply you can come up with?

^thought of getting a pack of cheap tesco coloured soft folders and cut up into strips to use as gels. Too lazy to go to tesco. Haha

Using those plastics may cause the picture to have a colour cast though.

boyzone, most ring flash are tend for macro, if for portraiture, it depends, if u have bad iso body with F5.6 lens, u have to get pretty close for the ringflash to be effective. but if u have a great iso1600+F2.8 lens, i guess u can shoot as far as 3 meter away

I would recommend a softbox for a better lighting directing, besides it's more solid and would last longer than the umbrella setup.

Haha, thanks. Yep, added vignetting and desaturated to background to bring more focus to the box.

Setup apply to all shoot. Using SB900 on vertical position, shoot straight to object, bare, manual.

Manual zoom also applied to SB900 to narrow down the light focus.

wanna ask.
can I trigger a 430EX II with 550D built-in flash? Coz I only have 1 flash only
I looked through the manual and they only mention about using an external flash to trigger the slave flash only.

magiclover, sorry dont think it can be done, so far,... only 7D can trigger 580exII with pop up.

but i heard the 1D series can trigger other 580 flashes with an 580 attached as commander mode. not sure with 5D

hold the 'zoom' button for 3-5 sec and u will see the 'Wireless flash menu' try figure it out, smile.gif i still figuring how to trigger other 580 with a 580 mount on 450D... lol

nope, you need at least a 7D or the upcoming 60D to trigger that flash using camera body's built-in flash.
or
use one of the higher-end flash that can act as a master (e.g. 580 EX)
or
use the ST-E2 flash trigger
or
use a cheap radio trigger (e.g. yongnuo or octopus or whatchamacallit)
or
use super expensive radio trigger (e.g. pocket wizard)

the flash itself has master mode so it doesnt matter what body u use.

even the 550EX has it.
