I manage to get my hands on the 2011 Elantra and I must say its quite impressive. FC also pretty good if you don't floor pedal too much. Steering's pretty light though.

Correctly priced, its going to sell.

I drove it a while in US as I rented it from Hertz.

FC wise is pretty good, there'a an "Eco" indicator to help you to see if you are driving economically. On long distance driving, it could be even better than the Ford Fusion (if you cruise 70-80 miles, which is abt 140kph). You can choose to off the Eco mode, and the power starts kicking it, a lot.

Brake is short and sensitive. I would prefer the freeplay is a bit longer. Right now the freeplay is only like, 1cm.

The steering's light cuz of the eletronic power steering, so you might feel a bit "disjointed" when you try to turn the wheel during stationary.

Its a good and sleek sedan car, but its quite light and you can actually feel the car being pushed to the side if the sidewinds are too string (10km/h). Mind you this is with a load of 4 full adults, after a shopping spree.

FC is about 30 mpg (12.75km/l) in city driving, can hit about 40mpg (17.5 km/l) in highway. Note that the petrol grade here in US is only like R89/R91 here. R95 is considered to be premium grade here.

And the car I drove, I'm not sure why but it came with 2 cigratte receptacle port...

This is in comparison to the Proton Wira which I drove in Malaysia...

That's probably because the price is already cheap. Getting a 2.0L for about RM 94K is a very good price.

Actually the difference is 12k.

Forte SX 1.6 = 85,800
Forte SX 2.0 = 97,800 (up 14% from base price)

Another comparison, Honda Civic:

1.8S = 114,980
1.8S-L = 119,980 (up 4% from base price)
2.0S = 130,980 (up 14% from base price or 16k more)

I think it's more towards the percentage difference between base and high spec that matters more than the quantum of difference.

Based roughly on the above, it sounds about right when you said the new Avante is around 9x,000 (1.6) and 11x,000 (1.8). However, at those prices buyers will think long and hard (esp for the 1.8) cos the difference between this and the Civic base model is zilch; in fact, it will have a hard time facing off against the likes of the Civic and Altis at that price level. A Hyundai is not yet a Honda, as far as Malaysian buyers are concerned.

yeah its a pricing strategy. Usually priced it near to each other just to convince the buyer which is confirmed wants to buy avante but just which variant so that he can also consider the highest variant.

The fuel consumption is the per tank method or the computer meter method?

I've read somewhere that the fuel consumption meter reading of some of the car manufacturers (don't know whether is delibrately) are lower than reality.

The Hyundai Elantra really looks good. If the engine/ gearbox refinement/ fuel consumption can match japanese then I think it can sell well.

FC quoted by manufacturers are always lower compared to real life driving...

looks wise, hats off for the koreans... engine and gearbox, they still have a long way to go to catch up with the japs...

Errr, sorry lor. Engine is smooth, 6-speed gearbox also very smooth. Smoother than my previous FD and CM5 lor. Kia's Theta II CVVT engine (2.0) is producing 156PS and 194Nm while Hyundai's Theta II Dual CVVT is pushing 165PS and 198Nm. GDI haven't come in yet.

Nothing much separates the Koreans and Japs in terms of mechanicals today, but in terms of design and equipment, you decide where to put your money.

FC is according to per computer calculations. Din't manage to pump the car yet.

Note that its hard to build up momentum in the first 2 gears without breaking out of ECO mode.
U don't really feel the shift shock....its almost on par with any CVT transmissions out there.

Yes i agree that the pricing is not competitive especially in Malaysia where ppl are more inclined to Jap models. Hyundai have to do what Kia has done with the Forte. They need to offer their cars with better specs and lower prices in order to fight the Japs.

bro, you are right.
i am one of the satisfy owner of Forte 2.0 6speed.
the performance is really damn good and the 6 speed gearbox is damn silky smooth thumbup.gif
i drove my gf brother civic 2.0 before and compared to Forte 2.0, i would say Forte is better in terms of engine performance, FC, and NVH. handling of Civic is a little better than forte.just my 2 cents smile.gif

thus, 98k with so much of features offered by Kia, i would say it really bang for every single buck u spend rclxm9.gif
so, dun waste your time to wait for the elantra already, go for Forte 2.0 tongue.gif

I think spec wise, both Elantra and Forte would be similar. But design wise, the Elantra is way better than Forte. The Forte although nice, looks too boxy while the Elantra has fluid sculptured lines. Rear legroom is also generous in the Elantra.

Just hope they dont kill it with some over the top pricing like what they did to the Sonata. Its really sad to see a great looking car like the Sonata suffer because of its high pricing. If it had been priced about 5-7K cheaper, im sure its sales would have been much better. Currently, compared to the Camry, Accord, Teana and Forte, the Sonata has the worst sales figures for the 1st 6 months of the year. Pity.
