The D90 is a digital single-lens reflex camera model announced by Nikon on August 27, 2008. It is a "prosumer" model (cross between professional and consumer) meant as a replacement for the Nikon D80. It is also available with the newly announced Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens.
Some of the improvements the D90 offers over the D80 include 12.3 megapixel resolution and live view capability. The D90 is also notable for being the first DSLR to offer video recording, with the ability to record HD 720p videos, with mono sound, at 24 frames per second (for up to 5 minutes or 20 minutes for smaller videos).

How to know whether your camera is brand new? Best to do this test before you make payment.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. For brand new camera, the very first time you switch on your camera, it should ask you to set the language, region, date and time.
2. Even if you reset the camera, the language, region, date and time will remain un-reset. So best way to guess it is brand new camera, is by seeing those screens.
How to detect Dead/Hot Pixel on your sensor? Best to do this test before you make payment.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. Put your Lens Cap on.
2. Set to Manual focus.
3. Disable AutoISO. Manually set ISO to 3200.
4. Take a photo.
5. View the image from your camera. Zoom in a little.
6. Try to spot blue/red/green dots. If it is there. Congratulations! You have got Dead/Hot Pixel.
What to do if you have Dead/Hot Pixel on your sensor?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Option 1:- 1. Send to Nikon Service Centre. They will remap it for you. This process might take up to 10 days.
2. Remapping doesn't guarantee to solve the problem permanently. The Dead/Hot Pixel might appear again in the future.
Option 2:- 1. Live with it. It is only a few pixel out of the millions of pixel.
2. Take photos in NEF (Nikon RAW).
3. Use Adobe LightRoom / Nikon Capture NX to process the photo from NEF (Nikon RAW) into JPEG. Both the software will auto remove the Dead/Hot Pixel when export NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG. No need to do any settings. Basically, just import NEF (Nikon RAW) -> export to JPEG. Dead/Hot pixel will be removed automatically in the JPEG.
4. Wait until your warranty is about to be over. Send it for remapping and cleaning.

6. View the image from your camera. Zoom in a little.
7. Try to spot dots. If it is there. Congratulations! You have got Dust.
How to remove Dust from your sensor?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Option 1:- 1. Live with it, if the Dust is not obvious in all the images.
2. You can ignore it or use post processing to remove the dots manually.
Option 2:- 1. The Dust gets too many, and you are tired of post processing, so...
2. Send to Nikon Service Centre. They will clean it for you.
Option 3:- 1. You get tired of going to Nikon Service Centre all the time, so...
2. Clean it yourself. This can be risky if you do not have the right tools and know what you are doing.
3. Below are some good info on how you can remove Dust from your sensor:-
5. Find the entry 'Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera'. The value represents the shutter count.
Which SDHC memory card should you go for?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
For 8GB, Nikon D90 can take up to 539 NEF (Nikon RAW) files. For 16GB, Nikon D90 can take up to 1114 NEF (Nikon RAW) files.
If you plan to take in JPEG mode, the number of files will be more than double the amount of NEF (Nikon RAW) files. That is really a lot for normal day2day shooting or short trip.
So what is recommended? My personal opinion is go for 8GB, SDHC (30MB/s edition). Take note of the logo on the SDHC memory card. Don't be confused by 30MB/s Edition and 20MB/s Edition.
Now, let's say you need more capacity / have more money? Should you go for 16GB? A lot of people would advise that you should not put all the eggs in one basket. Same advise can be applied here. It would be advisable to have multiple SDHC memory card rather than 1 big capacity. This is just in case it got corrupted, not all photos are lost and you still have another SDHC memory card with you to use.
It would also be recommended to format your SDHC memory card (from your camera) every time after you have access it from a computer.

SanDisk Extreme 3 SDHC 30MB/s memory cards : SanDisk set a new speed record of 30 megabytes per second for Secure Digital flash memory cards with the introduction of the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition line of SDHC flash memory cards. The new SanDisk flash memory cards, expected to be available worldwide in September in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities, are designed to deliver peak performance when used with the new digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, Nikon D90. The Nikon D90 Digital SLR is the industry’s first DSLR camera to support SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition SDHC cards at increased performance.
Nikon D90 memory card Featuring a 50-percent speed boost from previous 20MB/s cards, the new SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition SDHC card makes it possible to record 39 images in continuous shooting mode at 4.5 frames per second with a file size of 6.0 MB JPEG L Fine per image. The Nikon D90 camera captures high-resolution, 12.3 megapixel still images, and it is Nikon’s first DSLR to offer movie recording capability.
Advantages & Disadvantages of taking photos in NEF (Nikon RAW)?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Advantages:- 1. NEF (Nikon RAW) gives the flexibility and better result for post processing (eg, White Balance, Exposure, etc). If you choose to do post processing on JPEG, the output might not be as good as from NEF (Nikon RAW).
2. If you have Dead/Hot pixels, with Nikon Capture NX / Adobe LightRoom, the conversion from NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG will auto remove the Dead/Hot pixels (without any need of adjustment). Just import NEF (Nikon RAW) and export to JPEG.
Disadvantages:- 1. Need more storage space on your memory card.
2. Need more storage space on your computer hard drive.
3. Need some time to post process from NEF (Nikon RAW) into JPEG.

How to convert NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG easily?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. I've tried a couple of software, and I think the easiest and most user friendly program to do conversion from NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG is Adobe LightRoom (commercial software). LightRoom has option to batch convert NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG easily. It also allows batch post processing.
2. Run LightRoom.
3. Import NEF (Nikon RAW).
4. If necessary, make adjustment to the image.
5. Export to JPEG.
6. You can do adjustment to all the NEF (Nikon RAW) before exporting to JPEG at one go.
7. You can delete the NEF (Nikon RAW) files since you have the processed it into JPEG output. You can choose to keep those important NEF (Nikon RAW) files for future post processing.

Guys is there something wrong with my D90 or there is something missing which I don't know.
By right if we adjust the exposure to higher our picture will be brighter right? Even when i turn my exposure to +5 my picture brightness will just remain the same.

I got it for 6950 from J-One Amcorp Mall, average pricing I guess. But is one of the better pricing than in Melaka. Melaka goes for about RM7150 for most shops and only one guy offering me 6950, but have to order the unit one.

I still don't have a filter for my 70-200 . Need to get one ASAP. The shop was trying to sell me some Marumi filter at RM230.. I was thinking might as well I top up RM30 to RM260 for a Hoya HD .

Hoya HD, Hoya HMC UV(0), or the Hoya Super HMC UV(0)? Me probably going for Hoya HD as the Pro1Digital a bit hard to clean the stains ._. HD seems much easier to clean tho.

Synthetic tests are best instead of just visual . Seems like the better few UV filters around are from Hoya. Most likely going for HD as Pro1D is hard to clean :S.
One reason I don't go for any filter is that... the flare never fail to irritate me when its around LOL.

considering if u know how to shoot with MANUAL SLR then yes D90 is a good camera.. as in other camera.. it's not good when it's broken.. or not used. period. price range is from RM3.8k to RM4k+TQ
As in, if you get a smudge on the glass and you try to wipe with water/cloth. It'll smear even worse :S. As in outdoor shooting then kena, no time to clean it like that.

Seems not too bad, if the extra battery is an original D90 batt that is.

oh.. that means if u r using Hoya HD, it wont smear when wipe with water/cloth? i only have Pro1D, so no idea what's the diff btw this wif HD..

I think you can extend the warranty but of course with a price to pay. I've seen people selling off their nikon's with 2 years extended warranty
provided it's covered by the shop only. example of shops having these services=fotokem
No really, unless you super suei la. DSLR is built to last one, unless you really careless or what.
But i dun really care also. After 1 year if anything happen to my D90, i still can afford to pay for the parts so i dun get the extra 2 years warranty, think of later extend d then the 3 yrs nothing happened at all, lagi waste
More like not necessary because DSLR hardly will spoil other than infected by fungus. But you can avoid it by keeping your gears with proper guidelines.
I only think extended warranty is more applicable for laptop as they are prone to breakdowns after 1 year.

just because of d5000 using same sensor with D90, i dnt thnk its better to take D5000. D5000 dnt hv body motors for sure. less button and small body. no top screen LCD. much prefer D90. just kena poison with D300s ed

D5000 can only use AF-S lens, which are more expensive than an equivalent non-AFS lens that D90 can use
so D90 is expensive camera but u can get cheaper lens... and d5000 is cheaper camera but need to get expensive lenses ;p

Yes u can....but for D5000 (or other nikon bodies without motor such as D3000) u need AF-S lens to autofocus. If u use a AF-D/AF lens, u cant auto focus with it

although it's class 4 speed.. what i'm worried off is the quality.. imagine you have some important photo in it and it suddenly die off.. card can be replace, but the photo is priceless..

Which brand's Class 4 can read/write at 20Mb/s? Heck most Class 6 cannot write at 20Mb/s.
The old Extreme III is supposed to go at 20Mb/s, only the newer faster ones are 30mbps. The 30Mb/s ones have a tag, and the design is a little different.

What I meant is, which Class 4 you mentioned, does 20Mb/s read and write? Very curious to know, so far I've used only this cheap Extreme III can burst 100 shots without slowing down on my D90. Those Class 4 would stop halfway. (Say about 20-30 shots).
Besides, how fast your card can read and write depends a lot on the card reader. Are you using something like those Sandisk Imagemate?

just using normal usb card reader. test shows 19mb/s read write. burst got not problem. i tested till 50 shots. i don't think i will burst so much in the field anyway. max 3-5 shots burst for me.

ha ha ha even if u have SSSS (Super SuperSteadyShot) but ur hand still shivers a lot then it doesnt help a zit.. Memory card so fast, but I'm just on D90 o. The Extreme III I have is more than enough already . So fast but does not gain any additional speed due to body limitation, no point lor? =/.
I shoot RAW only, if lazy just convert all to JPEG .

I ask those question because i never have used a dslr .And I dunwan to get a useless dslr
I think it is because most of your questions can be obtained easily by using google now. Sometimes doing you own homework rather than just asking people here, the information you get from your own study might be more accurate as you are asking from different people and there are always different answers depending of personal knowledge level as well.
Therefor, i recommend you to go survey and read articles about those technical stuffs yourself.
Just debating, asking and reading online/magazines wont work. No DSLR is USELESS, it depends on how u utilize it and your creativity.
Just do some quick research and count your budget, get a used one if ur budget is not high and go practice. Keep reading but no practical still gives u nothing.
I going to get some magazine about photography , Which 1 is suggested to get ??
Here's 2 magazine you can buy and learn tricks about photography,
-Digital SLR Photography -Digital Camera Magazine (aka DCM)
But like zellleonhart said, you still need a camera in the end for pratical practise. Count your budget and let us know so we can tell you what you can make out most with the money you have.

is there any useless DSLR? i thnk the only useless DSLR is the unrepairable broken one... else is a good camera.

I dont know about 3rd party batt grip. The only major/noticable difference that i can see is that 3rd party bg do not have the sturdiness, and rubbery feel as the ori bg. Im using an ori BG.
Physical built of the 3rd party battery, it is fine actually. I've been using it and no probs. The only thing one should note is that the 3rd party battery drains faster than an ori battery. Your choice. Price VS performance. That's all. I have one ori and one 3rd party batt.

QUOTE(SkyBlue99 @ Mar 16 2010, 04:04 PM)
is it me or is it that a lot of people like to PP photo that makes the people looks as if they've a glow to stand out from the pic?
I dont really want to achieve "glow" at all, but when I do prints this "glow" is the difference between a well lit pic and and a dark pic. This pic is shot with the SB600 straight on the subject and the sun at the back of the subject, so I need to really pump up the exposure on the brides. Sorry I don't have the umbrella at the time.
I dont know about you, but I have to send a lot of images for photo processing and learned quite a bit from doing it.
1. Learned that Fuji has the best colour.
2. Fuji prints are packed full with colour. I went to quite a few kodak print shops and what they do is that they reduce the colour output of their printers and the results would be prints which are very low in colour contrast and the colours arent rich at all.
3. The few Fuji shops I went to will ask you whether you want to adjust your pics to have the correct colours and brightness for all of your pics when printing.
ps. I've been comparing 7-8 shops both Kodak and Fuji.
It's great but I have to consider this:
1. If I didnt make the subject "glow" as you said, and I asked the shop to properly expose the subject, any remaining sky/cloud detail will be as white as the printing paper itself. 2. If I don't expose the subject well, the sky will be nice but the subject will be underexposed. (might be nice and acceptable on LCD, but printing it is a different story) 3. To recover more sky detail and lit the subject well for printing i need to PP this pic like so.
Printing and viewing on normal LCD is different for me. I noticed this issue when I print at the shop without any type of colour/exposure adjustment AND when viewing on my LCD. Colours on a normal LCD monitor are not as reliable as on a correctly set-up CRT. I need an IPS type of LCD to really achieve the correct colour and better viewing angles that would match a CRT. (few thousand ringgits to spend just on lcd). So now I lowered the brightness of my LCD and adjusted the colours to match the prints as close as possible.
I need to really make sure the colours are right and the exposure are right as I need to design custom/story albums which combines a lot of images in one page. The problem which most of my friends make when doing custom/story albums is that they have a bright/high contrast LCD and didnt properly PP the pics and it results in albums/images which are dark/underexposed, oversaturated human skin tones, jumbled up well exposed & under/overexposed pics and thus not so nice.
Here is straight from RAW. Un-edited except resize.

Printing wise. Yeah, even if I'm doing a lof of printing, I would rather print at a shop that i know will give me the best results. They have like RM250k, RM500k kind of printers VS even RM3-4k photo printers...no maintenance, plus i get a cheap photographer's price.

It's a good all rounder but I'm wondering if you really need the 105-200 range? because reviews have shown that anything above the 105mm range is kind of soft as the lens is doing 11x magnification. If you really need it, yes I do agree that it's the perfect combo for you. But I'm guessing you'll be paying near to 6K for the combo?
If you are quite adept at cleaning up and cropping, then a small range fixed aperture lens beats an 18-200 when attached to a body with enough megapixels. The perspective after cropping will be the same anyway, as long as you stand in the same position.
As for noobies with too much money to spend, let those who want to spend spend la. It's not like it offends anyone or anything if they can't utilize it. Honestly, getting good photos doesn't require 70-200 f/2.8's anyway. Look through flickr and you'll see that alot of amazing photos dont even use professional grade lenses.

u know what luzzio. i do agree on this. however, the arguement about purchasing better equipment is kind of.. unfair? i mean.. it depends on the situation that we all face. it take both equipment and the photographer to take good photos. 70200 for example is good when u really need that range. else, why'd people buy it at all?

1st statement i support as well. 18-200mm zoom is not really necessary because same thing still can be obtained after cropping even with a 18-55mm or a 24mm lens on a large mp cam. Besides, prime lens will have better IQ than long zoom lens as well. Always remember the lesser then glasses in a lens, the better. 18-105mm VR kit lens is a very good lens for its' IQ compared to 18-200mm VR2 lens but of cause, in terms of convenience 18-105 will not beat 18-200.
2nd statement not very true though, because there's a reason for f/2.8 as well as those f/1.8 or f/1.4 to exist as well. f/3.5-5.6 lens can never obtain the same effect like those. Disregarding the aperture difference, just imagine 18-200mm VR2 lens can outperform a 70-200mm VR2 with its' wider angle coverage only, 70-200mm won't be on the shelf in camera shop anymore.
Added: There are many other reasons for lens 70-200mm f/2.8 as well as those 300mm 400mm lens to be on the shelf as well.

Ur statement regarding prime lens having better IQ isn't completely true as well. Nit all primes have better IQ compared to zoom lens

That's for majority though, but i did noticed that modern zoom lens seems to have improved their IQ until it almost or already equivalent to a prime lens already.

You seem to have jumped on my point that we don't "need" 70-200's to take artistic photos to instead mean we "shouldn't bother" with 70-200's.
I'm just relating it to gear envy for those who don't have rm5k lenses to just get off their butt and use whatever they have, and stop complaining about other people having better lenses but not being able to use it properly (not that it applies to anyone specifically).

Each lens has their pros and cons, for the artistic shots I would say a 70-200 isn't really built for that. IMO, the 70-200 is more of an event lens where you need the range and aperture for high shutter.
I like the sets from this guy here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeckson/ . Best of all is that he uses lens like 18-55, 35mm with a D90 body for his photoshoot . Results is excellent too.

But imo, artistic wise, it boils down to the photographer and not the lens or even camera body.
Cropping, PP, great angles etc etc from a creative photographer will make pics look artistic.
Nikon 1424 f/2.8, 2470 f/2.8, 70200 f/2.8, 200mm f/2, 300mm f/2.8 etc are workhorses for working photographers in their field of work. Wedding photogs will tend to need the first three lenses and wildlife/sports will tend to need a much higher range than 200mm.
I do hope to get some of those lenses to use for my wedding shoots...the 2470 is reallly sharp even at 2.8.. tried it. The all rounder lens for an FX body.
So it boils down to "Need VS Want"....do u need it or do u just want it?
IMHO... if i like the lens and i can afford it, i will buy it.. do agree with what alpha said.. everything boils down to "need vs want".. most of the time, we choose something becoz of wanting it rather than the needing it. celciuz statement about peer pressure is an example of want..

QUOTE(shadow111 @ Mar 17 2010, 08:42 AM)
IMHO... if i like the lens and i can afford it, i will buy it.. do agree with what alpha said.. everything boils down to "need vs want".. most of the time, we choose something becoz of wanting it rather than the needing it. celciuz statement about peer pressure is an example of want..
Of course, most of us here I'm sure does not 'need' any of the gears they're using it now. It is just for hobby and leisure instead of doing photography as a profession and taking photo is your main income. Pst, if this goes on, might as well say use a point and shoot instead of a DSLR . So basically, get what you can afford and like. No rules saying newbies can't use expensive lens, nor professional photographer using cheaper lens can't take good pictures.
why dont you get Nikon 50mm f/1.8D? heard most ppl said this is a cheap but good lens. i plan to get it this weekend... any comment on it? thanks.
f/1.4D or f/1.4G i heard can create more bokeh efect than f/1.8D, although i know f/1.8D is super cheap, lesser than RM500 can get this awesome bokeh lens already

Cheap and good . Only complain I have is the lack of VR, but then again the IQ is pretty good, it is lightweight and best of all does a lot of bokeh hehe. But my hit rate is pretty bad when I go below 1/30s shutter >(.

Then Nikkor 50mm F/1.4G is for you, although no VR too but at least you can increase your shuttle speed with extra aperture

hello D90 users.. i just sold my D60 last night. now hunting for a d90. most prolly will get it by end of today. then i will do a formal introduction here. wish me luck!
Oh btw, D and G is the auto focus availability in the lens itself mah right. Since D90 already have auto focus in the body, if use f/1.4D or F/1.8D also can auto focus right?

i dont understand that part.. i tot 1.4D and 1.8D can auto focus because of our body motor??

D Distance information D-type and G-type NIKKOR lenses relay subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possible advances like 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash. Note: D-type and G-type NIKKOR lenses provide distance information to the following cameras: Auto exposure; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, F65, F60, F55, F50, PRONEA S, PRONEA 600i, D2 series, D1 series, D100 and D70s/D70. actually I am still quite confused with D and G thingy
me 3rd...but i never care...as D90 can auto focus on that particular lens then it was enough for me now...maybe later time wan get more lens..then only i will start research about that...

I just wanna share my experience, opinions and a bit of researching through the internet about the famous Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
1. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (without motor) - 1st version - This lens is the fastest focusing lens among all three versions. - It has no motor and only can focus on bodies with built in motor like D80/D90/D200 etc. - Some are made in china and some are made in japan. Japan versions are somewhat better optically. - Quite a lot of this lens version have back/front focus problems especially the built in china ones.
2. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (with motor) - 2nd version - This lens is the slowest among all three versions. - It has a motor and can focus on all bodies like D60/D5000. - Afaik, all are made in Japan. - A small number suffers back/front focus problems. - The lens electronic contacts sometimes fails to connect to the body. This usually happens because it's still new. Try cleaning it with a clean cloth.
3. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (newest version with motor & VC) - This lens is 2nd in terms of focusing speed. - Slower than 18-105VR focusing speed but still acceptable. - It has a motor and can focus on all bodies like D60/D5000. - From what I've heard, there's no more problems with front/back focus issues.
Now the question most will ask me. Why does the built in motor ones are slower than the one without motor?
1. Tamron still uses micro type motor in all it's lenses and this slows down the focusing speed and thus making it longer to achieve focus lock which is a b***h when taking wedding pics or other fast paced photography jobs. Been there..done that.. Really hate it because my friend's Nikon 18-55VR can have a faster focus lock than me. Sold it off in just a few months...
2. Sigma's 18-50 f/2.8 HSM is really fast because of the HSM motor but IQ and colour wise, Tamron wins. It's a toss between speed and overall IQ.
3. I'd like to note that the newer 1750VC has a faster motor than the 2nd version but it still uses a micro type motor and not a ring type motor.
4. Micro type motor are used in Tamron lenses with built in motor & cheap Canon lenses which usually dont have the words "USM" on it. - This type of lens is cheaper to produce - Slower in focusing speed
5. Ring type motor are lenses like Nikon SWM (stated as AF-S on it's lenses) , Sigma HSM, Canon USM, Sony SSM, Olympus SWD. - This type of lens is more expensive to make - Fastest focusing compared to micro type and non motor. - Do note that pro lenses like the canon L lens and nikon's tele lenses have a faster SWM motor compared to normal/cheaper SWM lenses.
* This is why there's a lot of people selling the non motor tammy 1750 at a higher price than newer version (2nd hand). * This is also why there's a lot of people selling their 1750 built in motor (some just 1 month old) or swapping it with a 1750 without motor. * Most if not all sellers of the built in motor versions will just say they wanted to upgrade to other lenses, needed money, selling on behalf of friends etc etc...but now you know what the main problem is. It is slow!!!..at least for me where i really need a faster focus lock. The 1855VR, 1870 and 18105VR has a faster focus lock...yeah.. * The older non motor version is nice and fast but be careful if u wanna buy a 2nd hand NON motor version of the tammy 1750 because a lot of em has a front/back focus issue. U need to test it out yourself using a focus test chart here: http://focustestchart.com/chart.html

No need to hunt anymore...
I did that review.. Updated a few infos here and there..up there before your post
btw, non VC with or without motor? two very very different lenses in terms of focusing speed.
I saw a lot of newbies starting in photography or ones who wants to go into wedding photography use this lens. But it's sad for me back then when I had a D60 that I was too eager to get the tammy with motor and end up hating it.

i still need 17-50. 35mm will not suffice. cant afford to take a split second to miss the shot
what kind of shots are u talking about? From experience, my 18-105VR and my friends 18-55VR beats the tamron 1750 with motor hands down speed wise in weddings. Maybe u should keep the D60 and get a 2nd hand Nikon 17-55 f/2.8. Sure gonna be puas hati with the Nikkor 1755
For me...when I sold off my D60 with tamron 1750 (w/motor). I didnt look back at the tammy and bought the 18105.. peace of mind

nope cant keep d60 its sold. i wanna upgrade body bcoz of low light shooting cond. CCD sensor just wont do. when i say miss a shot is when u are already fixed at 35mm and when u dont have the priviledge to go closer or to take a step or two back. That when you need 17-50

for peace of mind, i'll get the new d90 with kit lens..
Results is excellent too.
its one year ++ i use kit lens without any complain. (tu pon lepas the_tranny mengamok lepas aku ckp kit lens tak sharp time memula pkai dlu )

So it boils down to "Need VS Want"....do u need it or do u just want it?
for wedding, i reli love to have UWA and 50mm. budden really need extra body to smoothen the job

Yeah.. having a lot of lenses isnt as easy as most people think when doing wedding and other kinds of photo jobs. I need to change it very often if I'm going solo at events. An extra body with a 50mm/70200/85mm and another one with UWA/kit/1755 2.8 is nice.. no need to worry about missing shots that you want.

changing lens taking more time. its also crucial to know which time to use wide, which to use tele. coz moment simply not the same as what u thnk of...

17-55 2.8 - Almost as expensive as the 2470 2.8 - Not an FX lens - Wise choise if you dont want to plan using FX/full frame - A nice all rounder lens for DX body
70200 - Big and cumbersome - Heavy - Expensive - For portraits/close range birding & sports etc..not group/family shots - Good thing is that it's an FX lens.

I turn off the focusing light regularly..except when the subject is close and very dark.
I dont want to shoot and let people know i'm shooting and dont want to have that annoying thing light up every press of the shutter. It kinda disturbs people... Saves battery anyways...

the kit lens is enough in my opinion unless you want to fork out rm1.6k or above for an ultra wide angle lens such as the Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24 and others..

Thanks for your opinion bro..both of the lens i've used before..Regarding weight issue, its not a problem to me..Upgrading to FF,ermmm..maybe 2-3 more years la..khatam first with Dx..i've scouted prices for the 17 and 70, they are like 1k apart..anyway the lenses that i would be selling of to get one of this fella is the tamron 17-50 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8..i like the range of 70-200 better..but sometime when needed a shorter focal length, problem will come and haunted me...in my mind now is just get the 70-200 then get one old but trusty 18-70 f3.5 kit lens..
i wanna but the price a bit too steep.. can find 70200 vr1 for around 4.8 to 5.2k. but that guy's lens is kinda perfect including the tripod moun, myb thats y so expensive
btw, im looking for a 70200VR1 but the white/grey variant....

oh.. i didn't know that there are white color for 70200.. does newer version comes in white too?
Sadly the new 70200 VR2 version does not come in white nor does the 24-70
The old 70200 f/2.8 VR and 28-70 f/2.8 does come in white...and it looks really cool.
fyi, there's still a new 28-70 white version in penang..
wow.. what a beauty... sure everyone will be looking at you if you are holding one of this.. it's very unique compare to our normal n dull black color lens.

Is even better in shape, size & colour over canon's white 70200 & black 2470
I read somewhere this guy doing a comparison and saying that the Nikon 2470 (not white la...) is better optically than the canon's version.

Still ok la... I prefer to shoot events =/ Wow! Nice... But then I prefer black.. Pure Dark Sider here .
Im a dark sider too..but it doesnt hurt to really stand out among the dark siders...
There is a prob though with large lenses being black in colour. The lenses will heat up really fast outdoors in the sun..
here is a quote from a guy on flickr...:
"Anyway, this lens is known as the "Great White" like a shark. Secondly, or thirdly for those who are counting, the reason lenses (mainly Canon) choose to design and produce white lenses, and mainly in the longer focal lenghts, is/are for those shooters who are outdoors and in rough and very extreme hot conditions. As you all know, black attracts heat more then white. I've personally seen a 300mm ƒ/4 warped from the heat and it's not pretty. If you're serious about photography and protecting your equipment either buy this lens is white or put a white foam cover over it."

Is even better in shape, size & colour over canon's white 70200 & black 2470
I read somewhere this guy doing a comparison and saying that the Nikon 2470 (not white la...) is better optically than the canon's version.
24-70 the new one is sharp! Tested on the D3s + 24-70. But didn't try the 24-70 of the Canon on a FF tho.

Warped? Is it in the desert or something? That seems like really extreme heat to me. I'll melt before my lens warp tho.

Warped doesnt mean that the lens melt like water..but maybe the guy meant the plastics was kinda bent in a way and lose the original shape..

Yeah... i tested the 2470 on a D3... it was awesome and really sharp.. even wide open at 2.8.. WOW! on a D3s.. makes carrying a speedlight optional...hehe

Donno which 300mm f4 he meant but iinm both the old and new one has a metal frame. What I understand is that the coating or anything that is made of plastic/composite warped because of the heat and lose the original shape. The frame is still the same but the plastic/composite material kinda got bend and stuff... maybe cause of the heat buildup in the lens..
donno for sure but we're not wildlife or war zone photographers working for national geographic...so we shouldnt be worried..
those guys' mega expensive gears are covered by NG..hehe..
celciuz, u still at melaka right?? Tomorrow we go yamcha and i wan borrow ur gear play
I'll be at Station 1 Melaka Baru along with my friends, not sure if I'll be going back home after work or straight go there. Usually I don't bring my gears one haha, but should be another VR II at the gathering.
can i know what's the main diff btw photoshop n lightroom? plan to get one n learn how to use it. which will be easier and more suitable to be used? thanks.

Can put it this way, Photoshop -> manual, Lightroom -> semi-auto .
Lightroom can basically do most of the things an average photographer would want to do on their pictures. Straightening, exposure, contrast etc. But if you wanna do something more detailed like 'make up touch up' for portrait, you'll need photoshop.

Lighroom can do so much more than what you mentioned

i dont really know how to describe the "how far does the color run off from?"
It just like i cant snap the exact color as what i saw on the spot. Any pro been there to snap pic ? Did anyone of u face the same problem ?
probably u need to adjust ur WB. Trying chg to manual WB and set it yourself. the cam's auto WB might be confused with so many different colours there.
just shoot in raw and then get the colour u want =p
@enzo i took a look at your picture's specs. at f/10 and 1/3s speed, that's bound to make your picture blur, hence the lightbulbs aren't sharp, if that's what you meant by it. your ISO was also at 200... for a night shot i suggest upping a little and sacrificing stopping down your aperture as well.
i'm guessing u shot at one of the auto modes. the lightbulbs themselves are bright, and don't require much speed/iso to get exposed nicely, but your auto settings probably compensated the surroundings, which aren't so bright. thus the bulbs themselves are probably overexposed, plus 1/3shutter speed will make it blur too.
my 2 cents./icouldbewrong

I'm, planning to get Nikon D90, but now i dilemma, the shop keep asking me to buy Canon 550D or 50D over Nikon D90, said Canon is made in Japan while Nikon is made in Thailand, and Nikon service is slow and expensive while Canon service is fast and cheaper, even accessories Canon cheaper than Nikon.

The exact same thing I faced, but in the end I took D90 over 40D/50D. Don't worry, despite being made in Thailand, Nikon build seems better than Canon's made in Japan build.
from my research over the net last time when i'm deciding which dslr to buy.. 50D is a good buy if u can afford good lens for it. if not, it's better to get D90.
Nikon service is slow and expensive while Canon service is fast and cheaper, even accessories Canon cheaper than Nikon.
Canon service is just the same with nikon...it will super fast if ur having the CPS membership..if u dont have the cps membership, then i think it will be the same only.
Friend of mine got the D3s, shop gave him extra EN-EL3e but cannot be used on his D3s so he's selling it to me at RM150. What's the pricing like in KL ar?
^RM150 ok ah, I bought mine around that price also
Alright great.
Pretty lame story from my friend, don't know real or not one. He already has a complete Canon system... with many great lens like 5dmk2, 85 f/1.2, 16-35 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/4. But then he also a very very rich kid.. ._. LOL.
Ok, now I have decided to get Nikon D90, not to listen to that shop anymore, I like the D90 very much. One of the problem is should I buy right now or wait until May because got Camera exhibition or show at Mid Valley, maybe will be cheaper that time?
I think im falling in love with Lightroom now ... so much easier and more friendly than the photoshop. Trying out some simple retouching elements offered by lightroom. Strongly recommended!!!
i know B+W is well known for their super slim filters n i heard that the thinner the filter is, the less image degrading u'll have
i thought the slim only applies to the metal ring, not the glass itself. Haha, learned something there. So is a B+W SLIM 67mm CPL filter for rm260 a good bargain?

im not sure as i nvr bought B+W b4 but based on Shashinki price of Rm400+, is pretty darn good price if is the same product
octopus cpl filter cost less than 100. kenko 67mm should cost less than 150
yeah i know, i was just wondering is there a big difference in image quality since the price difference is quite big comparing kenko CPL with say B+W or HOYA HD

lightroom nice.. but lack certain things that photoshop has.. try GIMP software.. freeware..!! functionality +- like photoshop... i like ur picture.. baby potrait nice>!!!
You cannot add fancy frame using lightroom ... anyway u can still manipulate the vignetting correction feature for pure white/black frame. I normally use photoscape (freeware) for frames.
Glad to see more and more people using lightroom!

I think Lightroom is a Auto Mode by all its preset. Photoshop is Manual Mode, more control, more option.
By the way, I went to lowyat today, I went to shop ( beside Shangri-La - right side ) they sell D90 set for RM3999 including 8GB memory+tripod+Bag and its under Nikon Malaysia warranty( they said la )
I look at the first page of this thread, looking for " how to know your D90 is original set? " Iwent to several shop they all say RM4100 ~ RM4600 for Original set ( with same 4GB + bag + tripod ) and RM3600 ~ RM3800 for AP set. then the shop beside Shangri-La offer RM3999 8GB memory+tripod+Bag Original Nikon Malaysia warranty. So for me that was really a good deal! Just how can I really sure they don`t tipu the warranty, I don't want just simply believe to what they said.
anyone know where can i send my d90 for service? kl/selangor area. it seems my pop-up flash cannot function anymore. when i wanna play cls last nite. it wont flash
Address: 11th Floor, Block A, Menara PKNS, No.17, Jalan Yong Shook Lin, 46050 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

i dun think lightroom = auto n photoshop = manual lah. photoshop have more features...lightroom also can manual n photoshop also can auto using filters heheh.
photoshop got layers, masking, better selection tools etc... lightroom only have to rely on brush tool. but ofcoz lightroom interface is much easier...impossible for photoshop to adopt it
reviews said D is better than G at distortion n vignetting control but overall not much difference in IQ i guess, unless pixel peep G has fulltime manual override, quieter AF D has faster AF using body AF motor if me, i take D, rather save the xtra cash on other stuffs

Nikon SB600 is within your budget, Rm750-800 or as Mavik said, u can try 2nd hand SB800 which is better at Rm1k+
In regards to the 50mm D or G version, the G version is nice and is sharper wide open compared to the D version (based on my on personal experience). I am still using the D version, and I agree that AF is faster with it with body AF.

I always thought pairing AF-S lense with body with focus motor will give a faster focusing speed.

SB900 more than Rm1600, way off your budget, lol SB900 is a replacement model for SB800, n its the most powerful flash for Nikon SB600 is smaller n lighter with less power n no master, but for casual usage is more than sufficient n i dun think so there's any more new stock for SB800

May I commend?
based on your picture details, you are using low ISO and slow shutter speed for the shot. Try adjust higher ISO at least 500 and above, shutter speed for 1/60 and the lowest aperture as possible. Besides that, try get a tripod for night photography. Hope it helps

Store your camera in a drybox. Alternative, take it out to shoot everyday should keep the fungus away .
This is what I hear la, cause you leave it in your bag. Easy to grow fungus if it is left too long. So if you expose to fresh air and all shouldn't be that bad.
but yeah, quite happy that i finally got some pictures of people. i'm usually damn shy so my entire flickr's just photos of non-humans... good that i could add some people photos lol
LOL, refund! The Canon 50mm is almost RM100 cheaper.
Waiting for their reply Not the first time they've send me the wrong stuff. In two times I dealt with them, both times has have atleast one wrong item delivered. Would've bought it from Shashinki if it weren't for the local warranty.
