Just debating, asking and reading online/magazines wont work. No DSLR is USELESS, it depends on how u utilize it and your creativity.

Just do some quick research and count your budget, get a used one if ur budget is not high and go practice. Keep reading but no practical still gives u nothing.

Lightroom, like its name suggests, it manipulates mainly "LIGHT"... So adding a frame is not possible in lightroom here (or maybe i dunno?)

For extra effects better use photoshop =D

sad lor bro... Still poor uni student, no money ahhh although it's damn cheap already. maybe will boro from mum 1st then after working during sem break only pay back her. but see how she reacts lor T.T if not not a chance at all!

BTW, i have a d40+kitlens here... If im to upgrade to d90, should i get the kit or body leh?
If just body and use my 18-55mm would be cheaper but no fun lor, the lens so small and difficult to sell the d40 body. how ah??

Ughh i thought of investing in lens 1st but i couldn't stand with my d40 already. The bad noise control at ISO1600 and the missing of internal focus motor (i plan to use 50mm f1.8, 28-80mm AF-D) and the grip, commander etc are asking me to upgrade.

So it would be better for me to get the kit lens as well?

my budget is around the price of D90 body only. Means if i get d90 then i can't buy lens anymore. but low noise performance in my D40 is pissing me off leh... especially when i shoot more indoor events now where i need more ambient light than flash light.

Great dilemma now... my d40 was a 2nd hand one, quite old already... Hmm

You already have a mind set which goes towards D90, I think no further discussion needed, just proceed and get your D90. biggrin.gif
*
Hmm yea my mind set is leaning towards d90 but many ppl including my friend keep advising me to spend on lens. Just that I would be happier shooting with a D90 than D40 + new lens. Of course getting both will be the best but since my economy status doesn't allow... Hmm

QUOTE(General_Nic @ Apr 2 2010, 11:47 PM)
if is the noise control u dun like, i think is better u get 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4G
with the large aperture u hardly nid boost ISO
i 1st time used my Sigmalux, not used to the large aperture
shoot fashion show at Pavillion yesterday, using f/2 with flash
i only nid ISO 200 n i keep using shutter 1/200, lol  sweat.gif
*
Hmm thats what putting me into dilemma... whether to get fast lenses or a new body.

Still in dilemma~ someone poke me with a needle and help me decide T.T

i also upgrade to D90 with the same reason as yours. but i keep the d40 for the 1/500 flash sync
*
looks like your condition was exactly the same with me but you keep the D40 and its kit lens. So do you think d40 to d90 is a worthy upgrade despite the 1/500s flash sync speed?

yes, i have been using d40 for about a year, advantage of d90 is
bigger body = better grip; top lcd make setting changing more easy; more shortcut buttons to change setting; front dial; 50mm 1.8; poor man macro with reverse 50mm 1.8; remote flash trigger...

got more but i havent go enough field trip to utilize it.
*
hmm mind explain a bit in the "reverse 50mm 1.8 macro" method?

with a reverse ring, u mount your lens' front part to your cam instead of d lens mount
this gives extreme close focus distance, enable u to shoot macro in a cheap way
but only manual focus, n no metering i think
*
That will need one lens mounted on the body (cuz it cant capture if without lens), then mount another lens infront of that mounted lens reversely, right? just read some tutorial about that

thats where the reverse macro ring comes in, act as attachment between the lens front to the cam
*
I see... will try it if i can get my D90 + 50mm 1.8. I think i will get D90 body, keep my d40 kit lens and get a 50mm 1.8. Sell off my d40 body.

How much a d40 body can be sold? About 1.5 years old

P/S: brb 10min

@Zell- investing on lenses is a great choice, long term usage. But on the other hand, price of body is dropping, a great opportunity to grab 1 before it goes up again. Definitely it's a tough decision don't know which to get 1st.

Words of mine, as a student (me and General_Nic as well), invest on lens would be better choice, body can get anytime and newer model in the future, after we start to work  icon_rolleyes.gif
Value of lenses will maintain from time to time.
Well, I just think for long term, haha.  laugh.gif
*
Yea yea i am also a student.. I still have 1~2months before buying, so i will keep thinking with that in my mind... thanks for everyone's advice, I will take note on that... but most probably i will still get a d90 first because the lenses i have in mind now are all AF-D lenses (50mm 1.8, 35mm f2, 28-80 AF-D)...

words from me..

if u have v limited cash then dun even try and think u must spend it. else, u have no money when u face emergency. this opportunity may close but another will open up in the future
*
yeap, i am thinking also whether to upgrade or not since i'm not funded. that's why u can see im already shooting 1 year+ but i only have a 2nd hand d40 and a kit lens.

Hmm now many ppl are on money crisis.. I will see how much i can earn in the following 2 months holiday, if little then i will skip this.

Next time when working straight away get D400 or D4 XD

P/S: actually i have already eliminated the thought of upgrading body but today suddenly have this thought after seeing the price drop. I was brought away by the sudden wave of ppl getting cheap d90...

Thinking again i should be careful in my spending =D
