cannot remember but my dell zino spec now a little outdated... the alienware is damn latest and not expensive.. it updated some of the design flaws like a slot load bluray as Dell Zino uses tray load bluray which is a little funny for htpc... others include uses intel which is cooler than AMD and uses the latest nvidia which support full 3D bluray and 3D games... I think it is good choice since we are moving into 3D TV and can guarantee alienware is fully compatible

i think ur card should support HD playback. maybe u need some tweaking on ur media player.
let the gpu do the decoding.

Hi guys,

Found an old netbook (ASUS Eee PC S101H) in a drawer which hasn't been used in ages. I read some articles online that show how to repurpose nettops into XBMC boxes (pure XBMC without Windows), and I was wondering if anyone had any experience of doing something similar but on a netbook.

The instructions look pretty straightforward, but my only concern is that my netbook doesn't have NVIDIA ION GPU on it.

Any comments? Will be trying this over the weekend...

if you are only watching SD shows then it would be just fine...
the maximum resolution it can handle would be 720p everything over that would be too much for the little atom to handle

You may want to look at XMBCbuntu, a dedicated linux backboned media player. I have tried to install on an unused PC a few weeks ago, seems pretty ok. But I am not sure whether your asus can be supported.

It boots straight into XBMC interface. At the same time, if you feel like it, you may also exit into ubuntu interface to surf net.

Worth looking at.

Wann to understand the following
Hdmi output from bd player-
1. Carries video signal
2. Carries audio signal

Is the audio signal digital or analog signal?
Does video signal needs to be converted to analog?

thanks for the replies guys. just to recap, yes i installed xbmcbuntu on my netbook but i struggled to stream 720p videos off the network. right now, i'm blaming my router, but in all honesty my gut tells me that the netbook cant handle anything above 480p due to the lack of NVIDIA ION. sad sad...

all signal in HDMI is digital.
digital audio signal will be converted to analog in ur TV or AVR for sound production.
video signal will be process in ur TV to be displayed.

Yeah only bad thing about the x51 is the back uses a mini-hdmi port, so u need to get a converter....
And I wish it supports a HDMI pass through, so that I can use 1 keyboard to switch between my Unifi STB and HTPC... (and this eliminate the need to get a audio switch)

Still if you're planning to sell ur zino..drop me a pm tongue.gif

thanks for the info.

notice when the source connect to AV receiver via HDMI(then from AV amp to LCD), somehow the pic quality is much better than direct connect to LCD TV.
does the upscaling on the AV amps makes so much difference?

if so, then how can we improve our pics quality if i am planning to connect from HTPC direct to LCD TV?
does HTPC have upscaling rate?
