If strictly at least i3, Acer 4740@RM1999, i3 + GMA HD

Well,I have a very bad experience with ACER.My friends and I bought ACER before and the model as I remembered it ACER Travelmate 4151.All of us bought the. same model. The problems I got were HD spoilt and the hinge after 1 years++.The same problem also occured to 1 of my friend. The other friend experience motherboards failure just a few days after the warranty over.So ACER model is a no-no to me. vmad.gif vmad.gif

So,I wonder is there left any other option to me. icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

hi, need some suggestion here.. below is my expectation:

1. Brand: any brand except acer (just personal preference)
2. Budget: around RM2.5k
3. Specs:
- 13/14" LCD
- discrete graphic card
- HDMI connector
- Intel new core i series

after make some googling, i found model below within my expectation:

Asus A42JR@RM2699
Dell Inspiron 14@RM2599
Lenovo G460@RM2249-2349
Compaq CQ36-110TX@RM2649
Compaq CQ41-214TX@RM2549

intel.com and amd.com..... or wikipedia... GHz now, is relatively unimportant now, Better is quite wide definition, some processor are better at specific tasks... most are between 2 to 3GHz any-ways (has been for 4 years or so), processors have been multiplying in additional number of cores 2 to 4 to 6... to 8...

the new mobile i5 and i3... 2 cores 4 threads (4 virtual cores, HT).. some i7, 4 cores, 8 threads.

I think im attracted with the Aspire 5740G, but i found few articles stating that this laptop has certain heat issues. I cant clarify yet, but will later.

Btw, the Asus k52jr is also a good laptop smile.gif

do you know what is the price for it?

Well, you need to see the architecture, newer generation usually faster if it has the same clock speed with the older generation.
While if its the same generation, higher speed clock, higher cache is better.
And also, more core is always better.

So far nothing much with i5 from Asus except N61Ja@RM4999, though there's are news of coming i5 with A42JR/A52JR...
3.5k is about nowhere, nothing much worthy in this price range...
You might want to consider Dell Studio 15 or Acer 5740G if strictly under 3.5k
If games is the priority, you can consider importing Sager NP2098, there's someone selling at garage sales, though its still uses C2D, its has one of the best GPU in this price range, should be under 3.5k...

More core is better, better get at least dual core nowadays... or quad core if that fits your budget...

Hey lee_what2004, comparing this few units, which one is the best for gaming (COD:MW2, L4D2 and etc) and normal usage such as going online, word doc etc ?

Acer 5740G, Dell Studio 15, Toshiba L510-S4318B, and Asus A42JR / A52JR and also Asus UL80VT

Well, overall wise, should be Acer 5740G.
Dell advantage is its onsite warranty while Asus have 2 years warranty by default.

Acer 5740G > Dell Studio 15 > Asus A42JR/A52JR > Toshiba L510-S4318
Though can roughly say they should peform almost similar, the difference is in their CPU speed, after sales and also what screen size you prefer.

As for Asus UL80Vt, its another different category, compared to others, it would be the weakest, but it has the best battery life of all.

Deng , acer 5740G is a lil bit over budget for me ... sad.gif. I could only afford asus A42JR which is RM2699 ... Hopefully with the i5 version it would be around the same price, then i would definitely grab it !!! biggrin.gif
