Hi... I'm going over to Monash's Parkville (near Melbourne Uni) campus for a semester. I think it's located just right outside Melbourne CBD.

So I've got some enquiries on the accomodation. I've checked realestate.au and the nearest location would be on Royal Parade.

Averagely what would rental (single bedroom) be like for a location like Parkville? I reckon it's expensive. But approximately what amount is appropraite? I've seen an average of $250-350 per week (cheapest I've found so far). Some can even go up to $500++.. Naturally I'd prefer to stay alone in a service apartment or townhouse.

So my other options would be either to live further out and commute by tram everyday. Or to rent an apartment unit and share out with a few friends.

So my questions are...

1. Which is a more practical/convenient option?
2. How much does rental cost along Royal Parade and The Avenue?
(I'm willing to spend on accomodation, but I'd like to know if what I see on realestate.au is way too expensive or reasonable)

Around CBD of course don't drive. Which monash campus do you refer to? Clayton? If you want you can buy a car. In the city my advice is no. Parking is so expensive. Congestion wise, quite jam but not as jam as KL shakehead.gif

i would be more dubious if an institution that offers MBA doesn't have such a prequisite.

short cuts typically don't lead to anything significant (especially when it comes to education)

mm, think it depends on what bank is more accessible in your area. More common banks are like ANZ and Commonwealth. Where are you heading =) I'm on ANZ btw, and sticking to it ever since. =P

hey, you can actually bring your ATM card if you're afraid of bringing too much cash. I think can withdraw but with a certain fee. Like HSBC allows withdrawal from some bank (can't rmb which >_<) but like some people already mention earlier, the machines are not easy to find.

You can bring travellers cheques instead of cash also. But I think generally you may need about 1500 - 2000 to start out la. If you have relatives there, then even better biggrin.gif

Ok my advise bring enough cash i think AUD 1k is enough to last 2 weeks.
Go do your student card and you can get your student card within 30 mins after they took your photo. then GO to the bank and do your bank account application.
Make sure you bring your passport also for that.
Ones your account is activated and confirmed proceed to wire transfer or cash in your travelers cheques to your account.
You have to wait 1 week for your debit card to be made, so make sure you have enough cash to last you during that period.
I advised used Commonwealth Bank or BankSA, i prefer BankSA cause a lot of branches and ATM in SA and also you can used Westpac ATM also for free.
BankSA debit card very convenient for EFTPOS, online banking and atm bankcard and also for other bank debit card.
Most major bank branches are near by uni Adelaide especially along King William St and Rundle Mall.
Anyway please do your student id and your bank account first before proceeding on other stuffs.

common sense will tell you that, you are not the only student that they are handling or processing during such peak period.

besides, cards are to be posted and may take a few business days to arrive (due to logistics & geography of australia in general)

you have answered your own question; bank drafts are not cash and therefore are not governed by the rule.
