Minimum wage is age-based I believe. Secondary school kids earn about $8/hour in fast food as far as Perth is concerned. Mature age (above 21) gets you about $16.50 in fast food. I thought those warnings about working in Asian restaurants (especially china men owned) were a myth - I ended up learning the hard way...

Its a tiered based system: http://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/national-mi...es/default.aspx

Currently the minimum wage is $15.51 per hour gross (less after tax + superannuation). Goes up to about $16/hr from 1 July.

Hi all
whew finally I am almost coming to australia for my transfer programme
just one single tiny 'roadblock': student visa
anyone ever encountered after the normal urine and chest Xray, you have to undergo other tests?
well in my case, I have to undergo an ECG which costs almost $550! (no thanks to my weird heartbeat) and a gastro-entrologist consultation at lifecare(which i assume is another 100-200 more - no thanks to my 'underweight')

wondering why many panel doctors for student visa is no longer providing the service.it seems only lifecare and gleneagles around Kl/Selangor area. and thus the long long waiting time (4-5hr)

BTW add me Monash Bachelor of Business (Accounting) 3rd yr this July

Student Visas (573) applied for after April 2008 have the 20hr/week work right in them, regardless of how long (or short) the student visa is valid for.

Why would you even contemplate working in Australia without a valid working visa, Asian employer or not? Its these typical selfish Malaysian that wants to circumvent the system for their own interests, and mess things up for the rest of us, that will see Malaysia be downgraded in the assessment category for Australian visa's.

Compared to the Indian and Chinese nationals Malaysian citizens have it easy applying for Australian visa's. Keep jumping plane and working illegally and appearing on Border Security and we'll join the ranks Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, Egypt, Kenya et al when it comes to difficulty in applying for Australian visa's.

When that day comes the usual ignorant accusations of "Australians are racist" will fill this forum, and make life unnecessarily difficult for those who abide by the rules. Just so you guys can be underpaid by Asian employers.

Do anyone know how much per week for accomendation rate nearby UOW? Furthermore, how much for part time minimum wages for, such as waitress or shop assisstant thr?
*
It depends if you want uni accommodation or just rent a unit/room. The place that i stayed was about AUS$160/week which include all the bills plus a cleaner [when I was there in 2008]. It was 5 mins walk to UOW. It depends if you want to stay near the uni or the city centre as the city is about 30mins walk from UOW. However, now they have the free shuttle that runs from UOW to city centre.
I think rental for uni accommodation is more expensive and it is located in a suburbs called Fairy Meadow which is about 30mins walk. There is a shuttle bus from there to the uni as well but not too sure on the bus schedule.
Usually uni accommodation are self catered with some offering full bordering if not mistaken.

But I thought that if you earn below a certain amount (was it A$6000 ?) a year, you will NOT have to pay taxes?

If that is the case, why will you receive less? You can claim back isn't it?

Oh and, where do you guys seek for short-term jobs?
Like during this 1 month winter break...

I'm looking for something IT related (Brisbane QLD) and I've been digging through lots of career sites but I've been declined all the time...

Even for really simple tasks such as data entry!!! Any tips? =(

A very useful site to search for room rentals (and other stuff too): www.gumtree.com.au. I guess the area closest to UWA is Crawley. So here you go http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-real-estate/cr...h/c9296l3008496. Rentals are normally sub $200/week for a room, but I always limit my search to those below $150/week (call me cheapskate if you will, I rent a $105/week room). But remember, cheap or expensive, everything comes with a price (as in good and bad).

My travel experience in Melbourne is I road trip down here with a friend and drove around exploring Melbourne with a rented car.

So my suggestion to you is to rent a car, learn how to drive the roads here and explore the city with your Google map or whatever navigation system you use.

Accommodation, you should ask a Melbourne local.

Entertainment ... There's a restaurant called Cashar Bliss at Hawthorn (Glenferrie Road). Awesome food!
YES, food is my entertainment!

Just rent yourself a car, head over to the nearest travel kiosk and grab some brochures.
Then you can plan your own roadtrip.
For accomodation, just stay in those budget inns as they are quite clean.
