Why not the other way round... use faster lens and reduce ISO instead?

Hi everyone, I can't decide which camera as I have lost touch with the camera world even though I was once an avid slr photographer many years ago (before dslr was invented). tongue.gif

Originally I had opted for Lumix LX5 becos I want something compact. LX5's built-in Leica lens' heritage and quality also attracted me. Furthermore, I like that it can zoom and autofocus while videoing. Unfortunately it not having any depth of field mad.gif for still photography is a BIG minus for me since I like blurry portraits. BTW, I also like existing light photography over flash. I don't do sports photography much so ultra-fast shutter and fast multiple fps not important to me.

Hopefully you sifu's can give me your advice and suggestion saving me hours googling around. tongue.gif

Thanks a million! rclxms.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories :  DSLR + Lens Kit
Budget: RM2-3K
Your Location:  KL
Preferable brand :  Any major brand which has reasonably priced bright (fixed or zoom) portrait lenses.
Type of photography u want to do :  Portrait & Existing Light Photography
Any specific models in mind? :  Prefer a small body. Don't mind cheap body x better lens, just-discontinued or even used equipment.
Any specific features u want? :  (1) Preferably has a built-in viewfinder so that I can hold the camera by pressing against my face to steady it for existing light photography; (2) If can zoom and autofocus while taking HD video would be an added bonus to me.

Canon 550D body only + 50mm f1.8 (though this is equals to 80mm in 35mm) which should fit your budget. You get a good sensor, accurate metering.. the works... including HD movie (though no autofocus in movie mode.. heck they're slow anyways).

This combo is pretty damn small and light at 630grams for body, lens, battery and the kitchen sink.

Hi Sniper, thanks.
Any more suggestion fellow forumers? Pls keep them coming.
Any constructive suggestion is welcome.
Oh yah, one more thing - quoting the 35mm camera lens equivalent will be very much appreciated as I'm not familiar with dslr's focal length.

I would suggest a Nikon D3100. It's cheap at around 1800-1900 with lens and its very light (505g if not mistaken)

It also has everything that you wanted above.

Use it with the kit lens or you can opt for

1) AF-S 35mm f/1.8
2) AF-S 55-200mm VR f/4-5.6G ED

But anyway, like always, you should go to the shop and see which model you like the best in terms of ergonomics etc

i would suggest the sony a33. its small, light(although the cheap plastic build maybe a turn off). for 3k you can get the body and TWO kit lens if i am not mistaken. or you can get the sony a55 with ONE kit lens. sony bodies have built in stabilisation so every lens you attach to the body can have stabilising effect, unlike canon and nikon which relies on built-in lens stabilisation.

even acceptable images at iso 12800, let alone iso 6400. biggrin.gif

currently has the best AF for video recording in a DSLR. very silent(even for normal lenses). very very quick and accurate compared to the 550D, 5DM2 and the likes.

sevenor, what was your previous SLR setup and do you still have your lens with you?

On dslr's at your budget range:

Canon: Focal range x 1.6 crop factor to get 35mm equal.
Others: Focal range x 1.5

I don't really reckon the D3000 to be a good buy now since you mentioned HD movie, the D3000 has no Liveview let alone a movie mode as its quite an old model. The ISO capabilities can also prove to be a limiting factor if you're talking about available light.

I agree with Zstan though, the Sony A33 has one of the most longest spec list to price ratio. However, the viewfinder is electronic (essentially peeping into an LCD) and it felt like its built using airfix plastic tongue.gif

if u're leaning towards the HD video mode, sony's SLT camera's (a55/33) got the best AF so far

got to agree with sniper n zstan

just that with the sony SLT cameras,u might be losing abit of light..by 30%..not that big deal if u dont really mind tho smile.gif
