Introduction

These are some of the common questions which are frequently asked by Arowana owners and the answers to these questions. As much as possible, we'll make sure that the contents provided here are unbiased, accurate & repeatable.

Q. What are suitable companions for my Arowana?
We are compiling a list of suitable companions for Arowanas. As the aggressiveness of Arowanas differ greatly, even very compatible species may be attacked by your Arowana. This list is to be used as a guide based on feedback from Arowana owners around world.

Q. I heard that we should not have planted tanks and Arowanas.
It's not a matter of keeping Arowanas with planted tanks which is bad, but the additional maintenance which is required to keep the tank clean. Planted tanks usually mean that there's gravel in the tank and although gravel is pleasant to look at, it can trap debris / waste products produced by your Arowana. This can foul up the water conditions rather quickly and if proper care is not taken, the water can deteriorate very quickly and cause problems / diseases for your Arowana. There's an excellent article regarding the upkeeping of Discus in planted tanks which could help any one in attempting a Arowana & planted tank setup. Click here.


Q. My Arowana is not eating. Help!
Probably the first sign of more serious problems to come, there are many reasons why arowanas refuse to eat. One of the least worrying & common problems is overfeeding. By continuously feeding excessively, arowanas tend to break into a "starving phase" and stop eating completely until they feel like eating again. The best solution to this problem is to monitor your feeding and feed only what your arowana is able to eat comfortable and stop when it shows signs of slowing down (or about 80% of it's eating capacity).

More often than not, an arowana that is not eating is a sign to more serious problems like sudden stress or even diseases. Check the tank water parameters for any unusual warnings like an ammonia spike or a sudden drop in pH or temperature. If the water parameters look fine and there are no visible signs of diseases, your arowana might be suffering from an internal disease. Monitor the arowana closely over the next few days and proceed with treatment as necessary.

Q. I'm going on a vacation for a week, what about feeding?
Most fishes are able to go without food for weeks so it's nothing to worry about. Feed your arowana slightly more the day before you leave and also slightly more on the day you come back.

Q. How do I know if my Arowana is a male or a female?
There isn't a sure-fire way of telling the sex of an Arowana. One way which could indicate the gender of the Arowana is by looking at it's mouth. Males usually have "deeper" mouths because their are mouth breeders and the space is required to hold the eggs/frys until they are ready to venture. A sort of protection if I'm not wrong.


Q. I want to keep 2 Arowanas in the same tank. Will they fight?
It is not advisable to keep 2 arowanas in the same tank as injuries are unavoidable and death of one fish is almost certain on most ocassion. Arowanas are very territorial fishes and they usually do not tolerate the company of another "competitor". Multiple arowanas can be kept together only if the numbers are large enough (e.g. 6-10). With such a large number, the aggression is reduced and the arowanas too, will find it hard to establish any form of territory. A large tank however, is needed to house such a large number of arowanas. The only exception to keeping 2 arowanas in the same tank is when the arowanas have paired off after courtship and are ready for breeding. This is VERY rare and only attempted by a very small number of experienced owners.

Q. My pH is 7.5, will my Arowana be fine?
Arowanas prefer water parameters that are slightly acidic (6.0-7.0). There's no doubt that an arowana can live comfortable in a slightly alkaline tank, but in the long run, the stresses of a different water climate could result in the weakening of the fish and makes it susceptible to diseases.

Q. Is aquarium salt necessary during each water change?
In a word, No. Aquarium salt has numerous benefits like prevention of diseases as well as improving gill functions but it's not absolutely essential during water changes.

I never get anything as present before if I score good in exam. My current 3ft tank is the first present because I got 4th in whole Form 2 during middle year... I just enquire 6'X2'X2' tank with cabinet and filter costs RM2500!!! That's alot and I don't think my dad will approve that unless I pay for some of it...I'm enquiring now for 2.5ft with hood and stand to put outdoors. And I will get that tank long before PMR though my aro can't survive so long in that tiny tank...

But I dunno how to ask tho... The shop owner is a grumpy guy he doesn't like teens like me. He is only friendly to his friends... The shop assistant is helpful however not always there...

Nice nice.. thanks for comparison post.. i actually never done the proper coparison too LOL... well, to date, the fish has more gold on the 6th level scale..

BenSow, later on you can give us discount kaw kaw on aro when u work at the LFS.

If I'm not mistaken, Black aro sold around RM300 +. But if u want to buy Black aro, need to be more careful because some LFS sold silver aro as black aro since the look is almost same when it is young.

I suggest u buy rtg, easier for u to trade-in later.

I dunno if they allow... If can will surely discount you guys la. This LFS the best for arowana people... A lot of feeders. The last time I saw have feeder minnow, koi, tilapia and oso minnows. They also got sell ghost shrimp, frogs, crickets and centipede(RM2.50 each),MW and SW. They have 4 display arowanas. The first is in front display tank a BBXB and the others are red.

Black Aro around RM300+?? Wow good thing I didn't buy. 88 Marine sell for RM500!

And saif, where did you buy your 5' tank from? Your LFS sell or you order? If order, from who?

My 5 footer with cabinet buy from setapak akuarium through LFS. The LFS ordered it for me.
My 5 footer double tier is a second hand tank, bought from a guy who want to shift to new house at that time.

I talking about 99fish and pets at Tmn Taynton. I go there every Saturday or Sunday. I'm thinking of asking my dad to ask them about working there tommorow... I asked about 6ft tank via Setapak Aquarium Website and email them but have no reply. I went to mudah.my and asked about 4 people who do aquarium services and only 1 replied. The one replied said 6ftx2ftx2ft tank with cabinet and filter(dunno if got hood) costs 2.5K! Earlier I asked another guy too abt 5ft x 2ft x 2ft and the price is 1.2K include stand, tank, hood and delivery. The stand itself is more expensive than my current aquarium set!

My single 5footer came with cabinet including hood. All around 1.8K last time if i'm not mistaken.
My double tier 5 footer came with solid wood stand. No Hood for this tanks. This 1 is second hand, only 800 including delivery.

bro, why not u consider a 6x3x3 fiber tank with front glass panel? I always suggest my customer to go for fiber tank if the size is > 5 ft long, as it is lighter and cheaper than glass tank..

ketapang leaves is very good for most tropical fish...can soften water and lower ph value by creating 'blackwater''....many use for bettas, discus and also arowana
can get from the tree also known as indian almond tree

Nice bro. For ketapang leaves, pick up the dried 1. Wash until it clean before you use it in tank. Don't use the green leaves.

And guys 1 question yesterday a guy offered me a 5x2' tank for RM250 include stand(he doesn't suggest put outdoors) and no hood. I'm putting the tank outdoors and would like something bigger like 6-8', but the price is good, should I take it or wait for larger tank offer?

Bensow, when come to aro you need to consider the glass tank tickness b4 you buy 1. Minimum advisable glass thickness is 10mm. If you can get 1 when 12mm even better.



Bro, try ask wmkr. He bought 1 last time from Kin Fatt. I can say the fish quality is quite good although the price is cheaper than other LFS.



Bro, do WC and try salt + heater first. If can't heal, can proceed to use white spot medicine. I think can find at LFS 1.

Aro is an aggressive creature. I'm talking about glass thickness because sometimes hobbyist have encounter aro bang into the tank glass.
So, I just advice u on in advance. Thick glass also can support the tank from water pressure from the water inside the tank.

My 4 footer do have cover like yours. I open the lid a little bit to increase the air ventilation in the tank. Yes I'm taking the risk.

Wow, my arowana saved his own life by jumping! Last night while looking at my small planted tank I suddenly here some crashing sound, I look around and there was nothing... So I continued do a little change of scape in my planted tank then another loud bang, this time I look more carefully, I suddenly fear the worst-the stand is collapsing. I immediately look under the stand, I see that the support isn't that strong and wouldn't hold long. Then suddenly another loud bang and some water splashed out onto my back, now I know its my aro jumping like mad for the first time, so I weigh the hood down and inform dad about the stand. If it weren't for the jumping I wouldn't have looked at the stand and it may come crashing...

And what do you guys think of the pics?

u r so lucky my friend,look at the center of the base wooden panel,is sagging.very dangerous and ur tank bottom joint may crack due to
the water pressure.shld have more solid built stand to aviod worse circumstances.u wouldnt want to see ur aro swiming on a flooded floor,would u? jus newbie 2 cents of thought.

Yeah I am really lucky.... The right leg is already bending out a bit and some of the screws are comming out, will take pics of it... Going to LFS to either buy or place order(I hope its buy, it won't hold long..) And guys, do you think a student can order fish in bulk?Like neon tetra, those ornamental fish, not feeders... Because me and my frinds want too, so I thinking order bulk is cheaper for all of us...

dangerous act to carry loaded tank bro even wit 4 persons .jus go buy some buckets to avoid injury,not worth trying.buckets wont cost u much anyway.
2 person shld enough to carry a 3' empty tank. 3' x 1.5' iron stand can easy get from lfs...anyway 3' tank wont last long for ur silver aro.upgrading aro is easy but upgrading ur tank size is hel a lot of work.imo,temporary locate ur tank on floor (safe corners) and go seach up n down for a bigger tank set rather spending more to remedy ur current tank ofcos $$$ is another issue.jus newbie opinion.together we learn.cheers
