Frequently Asked Questions:

Introduction

These are some of the common questions which are frequently asked by Arowana owners and the answers to these questions. As much as possible, we'll make sure that the contents provided here are unbiased, accurate & repeatable.

Q. What are suitable companions for my Arowana?
We are compiling a list of suitable companions for Arowanas. As the aggressiveness of Arowanas differ greatly, even very compatible species may be attacked by your Arowana. This list is to be used as a guide based on feedback from Arowana owners around world.

Q. I heard that we should not have planted tanks and Arowanas.
It's not a matter of keeping Arowanas with planted tanks which is bad, but the additional maintenance which is required to keep the tank clean. Planted tanks usually mean that there's gravel in the tank and although gravel is pleasant to look at, it can trap debris / waste products produced by your Arowana. This can foul up the water conditions rather quickly and if proper care is not taken, the water can deteriorate very quickly and cause problems / diseases for your Arowana. There's an excellent article regarding the upkeeping of Discus in planted tanks which could help any one in attempting a Arowana & planted tank setup. Click here.

Q. My Arowana is not eating. Help!
Probably the first sign of more serious problems to come, there are many reasons why arowanas refuse to eat. One of the least worrying & common problems is overfeeding. By continuously feeding excessively, arowanas tend to break into a "starving phase" and stop eating completely until they feel like eating again. The best solution to this problem is to monitor your feeding and feed only what your arowana is able to eat comfortable and stop when it shows signs of slowing down (or about 80% of it's eating capacity).

More often than not, an arowana that is not eating is a sign to more serious problems like sudden stress or even diseases. Check the tank water parameters for any unusual warnings like an ammonia spike or a sudden drop in pH or temperature. If the water parameters look fine and there are no visible signs of diseases, your arowana might be suffering from an internal disease. Monitor the arowana closely over the next few days and proceed with treatment as necessary.

Q. I'm going on a vacation for a week, what about feeding?
Most fishes are able to go without food for weeks so it's nothing to worry about. Feed your arowana slightly more the day before you leave and also slightly more on the day you come back.

Q. How do I know if my Arowana is a male or a female?
There isn't a sure-fire way of telling the sex of an Arowana. One way which could indicate the gender of the Arowana is by looking at it's mouth. Males usually have "deeper" mouths because their are mouth breeders and the space is required to hold the eggs/frys until they are ready to venture. A sort of protection if I'm not wrong.

Q. I want to keep 2 Arowanas in the same tank. Will they fight?
It is not advisable to keep 2 arowanas in the same tank as injuries are unavoidable and death of one fish is almost certain on most ocassion. Arowanas are very territorial fishes and they usually do not tolerate the company of another "competitor". Multiple arowanas can be kept together only if the numbers are large enough (e.g. 6-10). With such a large number, the aggression is reduced and the arowanas too, will find it hard to establish any form of territory. A large tank however, is needed to house such a large number of arowanas. The only exception to keeping 2 arowanas in the same tank is when the arowanas have paired off after courtship and are ready for breeding. This is VERY rare and only attempted by a very small number of experienced owners.

Q. My pH is 7.5, will my Arowana be fine?
Arowanas prefer water parameters that are slightly acidic (6.0-7.0). There's no doubt that an arowana can live comfortable in a slightly alkaline tank, but in the long run, the stresses of a different water climate could result in the weakening of the fish and makes it susceptible to diseases.

Q. Is aquarium salt necessary during each water change?
In a word, No. Aquarium salt has numerous benefits like prevention of diseases as well as improving gill functions but it's not absolutely essential during water changes.

I am not going to move anything just my other stuff and the tank is outdoor so won't be noisy and splashing nevermind but they still won't let. Tips?

Why don't u make your father promise u that if u get at least 6As in your PMR, he should give u a 6'x2.5'x2.5' aquarium? U need 2.5' width for bigger arowana. smile.gif

I never get anything as present before if I score good in exam. My current 3ft tank is the first present because I got 4th in whole Form 2 during middle year... I just enquire 6'X2'X2' tank with cabinet and filter costs RM2500!!! That's alot and I don't think my dad will approve that unless I pay for some of it...I'm enquiring now for 2.5ft with hood and stand to put outdoors. And I will get that tank long before PMR though my aro can't survive so long in that tiny tank...

Thanks

Then I was thinking that 6footer is for my arowana's own good, but should I invest in it? Or should I...stop rearing arowana? I don't know what to do... I oso not much savings... Should I save or spend?

Really need help...

Just buy it. If it makes u happy why not?

Persuade your father to buy it for u. Keep asking from him but of course u have to ensure that he is in good mood before asking. Eventually he'll buy for u. Trust me!

And I'm afraid that my father is not the kind that can be persuade... Last time when I mentioned the word upgrade to bigger tank he straight just say: No lah, you got so big tank oredy, still want meh?" My parents don't support my fishkeeping one... I think paying for it is the best way.. Last time I persuade him many times about getting me a laptop, he keep refusing until I said I will pay. Then he oni agree... Economy is tough now.. And I dunno where to start if I persuade him. Plus I break down easily...

The keywords are persistent and perseverance. Don't easily give up. Every man has a soft spot and most of the time; his wife and children.

When he is in good mood just say to him;

1) Dad, I love to have a 6' tank.
2) Dad, is it ok if u buy me a 6' tank?
3) Dad, my friend's aquarium is nice. Can I have it, please?
4) Dad, if I really study hard this year and get to be top 3 student, can I have a 6' aquarium, please?

Use those words over and over again every 3 or 4 day when he is in good mood. U'll get it! But don't cry, just talk to him nicely and in a sweet manner.

Walau devil keep fish so long oredi... 3 yrs old goldfish... And guys do you think I confront my dad personally or e-mail him will have a better chance to get 6footer?

Thanks
*
You dont have to confront or write an email. Talk to him in a casual way and please be nice, but you have to be strong hearted becoz your father may say these things:

1) 6' aquarium is not cheap. I don't have the money.
2) We just bought a 3' tank. I don't want to spend for a 6'
3) We don't have the space.
4) Don't waste my money. We need money for other things.

But u don't have to worry. This is a norm. Most fathers will behave in such a way. U just keep quiet, smile and say nothing. Unless:

1) He is asking the reasons u need it; then u explain.
2) His reason is it is not good for u; for e.g. it will deviate from your studies; then in this case u have to convince him.

Other than the 2 situations u just look him directly in his eyes, smile and say nothing. Don't argue. Becoz u won't win the argument. Your target here is to persuade him and not to force him. U will achieve nothing if u argue or quarrel with him. Remember, it is his money!

Wait for another 3 or 4 days, then ask again those questions that I have suggested:

1) Dad, I love to have a 6' tank.
2) Dad, is it ok if u buy me a 6' tank?
3) Dad, my friend's aquarium is nice. Can I have it, please?
4) Dad, if I really study hard this year and get to be top 3 student, can I have a 6' aquarium, please?

Repeat this cycle again and again. It may take some time but if u be patient and continue with this method u will get it. But I may caution u that for a stingy father it may take longer, may even extent to 1 year. But average about 6 months.

He may then slowly make a research on the price of 6 feet aquarium without your knowledge, finding a cheaper manufacture or seller and then he'll buy for u.

U may discuss with Devillsin and improve this method as he has successfully persuaded his father. Of course his father is different from yours but most fathers will do as what I said above.

Congratulation Ben for your new 6' aquarium! biggrin.gif

So if he says:
1) 6' aquarium is not cheap. I don't have the money.
2) We just bought a 3' tank. I don't want to spend for a 6'
3) We don't have the space.
4) Don't waste my money. We need money for other things.

I just look straight into his eye and say nothing??? No reply what so ever?
i only have answer for number 3....

I have the reason... Here's the case with my aro:
At first I wanted to buy it and sell it when it gets big, but now I decided not to sell it, so I'm getting a bigger tank. If my dad asks me whats the big tank for, I'll just say there's no buyers...

He will NEVER research the price without me knowing, he doesn't have any knowledge of the aquaria hobbyist world! He will only research by asking me to research...

*
Ben, please re-read my suggestion. You should not answer any of the 4 questions, because that will lead u to an argument with your father. You won't win the argument.

When u ask him to buy a new tank, u know that the answer will be 'no', so what u do is just paste/register in his mind that u want a 6' aquarium and by keep repeating it every 3/4 day, u want him to remember it. U want to make him thinking about it.

U should also try to play with his emotion. This is how u do it:

U love keeping the arowana/other fish so try to share your happiness/hobby with your father.

1) Let say u're feeding the fish, do it when your father is around and show him. "Father, look at the arowana. The way he fetches the worm is very interesting. He is very aggressive in snatching it!"

2) When u read some interesting facts about the fish, tell it to him. Explain those facts to him.

3) Your weekly routine of changing part of the water, do it while he is around so he may see your high interest in it.

When u do a research on the price of the new aquarium or any good offer of a second-hand aquarium, always tell your father. Print the picture of the aquarium and show it to him.

But of course, all these must be done in a casual manner, the nice conversation between father and son.

Believe me young man, if u do as I suggest, u will get the 6' aquarium of your dream!

Looking into his eyes is not important. What u need to do is ask in a polite manner again and again. U need to stand there and listen to his mumbling and nagging and then off u go.

It may seem nothing to you. But most fathers will try to give the best and make his son happy. If u reminisce, u will find that most of the time your father will buy u the thing u asked (if it is cheap and reasonable to his thinking).

By sharing your happiness with him, it will make him thinking; "If that really make u happy, why not spend some money for it.". He may say nothing or may even be nagging about the need of money for other things but deep in his heart he want to give u the best and make u happy.

Just try this method, u have nothing to lose and much to gain.
