actually while all these inputs are very capable for a CRT, will they actually display every pixel of a 1920x1080... (say for a 1080i input)

actually, i'm also very confused about this. earlier, someone posted about fine-pitch and super fine-pitch CRT tubes. maybe the lower end models accepts 1080i but their display is not true 1080i??

Not quite sure. But there is definitely VERY significant improvement when watching in 720p and 1080i.

Ex: When i set XBMC in 720p, due to progressive nature, the image is rock stable like a monitor. When i set to 1080i, i noticed there is a slight horizontal wavering of a fine thin line in one of the menu screen, but it's no big deal. Overall, both modes are pretty damn sharp.

The BIGGEST improvement is seen when you watch you collection of hi-res photos took at 3M and above. When you compare this in normal 480i or even 480p, you get so much more details, almost like a PC monitor!!! thumbup.gif

I'm not sure you really get the actual 1080i or 720p resolution, but it sure is good enuff for a small 29" TV. smile.gif

Wah lau senq really throwing price kau kau, saw their ad for benq... 26" lcd = 2999 / 36 months = rm 83+ and 32" = 4999 / 36 months = rm 138+. But applicable to rhb cr cards only. Maybe lcd sales not doing so well, over stock so every1 throw price, hehehe. Very tempted but got the philips crt instead, i watch a lot of astro and normal tv, so the 16:9 format not really suitable, 4:3 images will look weird lar.

16:9 for gaming and DVD man...you still can view 4:3 in 16:9 as long as you don't mind the black borders.

if i got budget I'll definitely go for 16:9.

It's the future!!!

After getting my widescreen, a lot of movies still have black bars because they keep their original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 doh.gif

Still better compared to viewing on a 4:3 TV though laugh.gif

Not any more. Plasma technology has improved a lot lately and all the new panels have some sort of burn-in protection in place. There's still a very small posibility of it occuring though.

QUOTE(JonC @ Jun 5 2006, 02:45 PM)
Just bought the philips 29pt8845 last friday for about 1.5k from hsl, manual stated that it does support 720p and 1080p as well. Took abit of time to tune the color to my liking. The first 5 hours or so the color and PQ of the progressive scan image through my denon 1920 dvd player connected to the TV was awful ( pixelization / noise / jaggies/ vertical lines all over the screen) . Still running in the tv and can see the PQ improve day by day.  sweat.gif  wink.gif

I notice that in dark scenes in a movie, the black level through progressive is way darker than interlaced. Dunno whether its the player or the tv causing this.  Noticed the color from the philips is not as vibrant as my old JVC 50hz tv, but the color seems to look "thicker" and more natural.

Hope this helps!

I tried Desa after that but they ran out of stock. It turns out to be a blessing in disguise because after that I found a Pioneer DV-S969AVi in the Garage Sales section for around the same price thumbup.gif

there is a company in singapore that sells the cable (bettercables) i am looking for http://www.millennium.sg/ but as this is my first time trying, so i ordered something cheaper from the states http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Cables/SCVM5R.asp after failing to find it in klang valey.

If it is PC input, you got to check if it is VGA input (same connector with your PC) then you dun have to search for this cable. you just use ordinray PC VGA cable can be found in low yat.

I just got the cable and tried 640x480p, wow, no flicker, vivid colours and my HDTV performs just like a monitor!

However, for the 1080i timmings, word characters flicker like mad and not readable (just like using the S-Video), but I can watch HD stuffs on my HDTV at 1080i, if i get the custom resolution correct!

How I wish my HDTV supports 720p...then I can have higher resolutions...

Btw, I saw a network shop in Sunway Piramid selling the VGA to RGBHV break out cable but BNC connector...

I am enjoying the HD trailers from apple.com on my HDTV and playing PC games on my TV.

There is about 5% overscan though...I hope to fix this with powerstrip.

Wow, there are such cables that actually work? I got myself a VGA to component cable from Lowyat before, and....it doesn't work. I only get distorted images and funky colours. According to the shop attendant, the cable was supposed to be used for projectors only.

Would you mind telling me where you bought yours, and the brand (if any) and price as well? I would really like to permanently use my HDTV as a monitor for gaming.

Wow cool!

My Philips set has a HD RGB input at the back. Does anyone know if I can get a VGA to RGB cable to plug into my TV?

Thanks!

The shop attendant is right, the VGA to Component is for projecter use because some projectors does not have the Component input. That cable is for the purpose of connecting a DVD player component output to VGA.

You nead extra 2 wire instead of the RGB 3 wire, that is Horizontal & Vertical sync wire. So, one end is a VGA connector (the usual VGA monitor connector, and the other end is 5 RCA plugs R,G,B,W(Vertical),Y(Horizontal). You have to make sure your TV has the RGB+HV input of course.

i bought mine from digitalconnection.com http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/cables/scvm5r.asp

like i said, i saw a shop in sunway piramid that sells such cable but not RCA connector but BNC connector.
