Thanx alot. I checked out the Toshiba 42HP95, it dosent have a 1080i but has a 720p. Will it compromise any DVD quality or gaming graphics?? But i know a 720p is better than 1080i.
*
Nah. It won't compromise your DVD picture issues - because DVDs don't go beyond 480p. It shouldn't be an issue.

As for 720p vs 1080i, it depends on who you ask. Some people will say "720p or die!" and others will shrug and say 1080i's good too. Either way, if your screen is smaller than 60" you WON'T be able to tell.

Hope that helps.

Dear all sifus, need your opinion...

currently i'm using Sony DB-29M61 TV connected to my dvd player & XB360 (both connected thru component cable)
I found that XB360 produced better PQ than my Yamaha DVD player (progressive scan capable) when playing dvd movie

since I'll donate my Yamaha dvd player to my brother, i'm thinking to get Samsung HD-950 dvd player as a replacement

do you guys think there is significant improvement over the PQ from the samsung HD-950 player ?

or any other option for dvd player that produced good PQ (price range Samsung HD-950)

thanks for your input.

whats PQ? Picture Quality?
XB360 only display 480p for DVD Movie. if you want a better picture quality, get a dvd player that will upscale the video to 720p or 1080i. how much is the samsung price? or you could just get xbox1 and put in XBMC.

I'm assuming you set your DVD player on progressive scan mode too?

If that's the case, then I can't really say - except that if you buy an upscaling DVD player it won't necessarily improve your DVD experience. Remember, as xxboxx said, DVDs top up at 480p.

yes PQ = Picture Quality

to my understanding, this samsung is capable to upscale video source to 720p/1080i ..no ? can this be achieved using component cable ?
too bad this sony tv dont have HDMI input (HDMI to HDMI and HDMI to DVI cable come together with samsung dvd player)

if thats the case, it should produced better PQ than XB360

abt the price, someone had post the price ard 950 in this thread

thanks for your input

if the samsung player can upscale dvd movie to 720p/1080i i think there should be improvement compared to XB360 (420p)

i google the samsung model, and the website does stated it support 720p/1080i. technically it should give better picture quality than 480p, but at that price you are better off with xbox1 and xbmc.

Upscaling players are just marketing gimmick according to this dude sweat.gif

http://www.hometheaterfocus.com/blog/archi...08/02/2227.aspx

No idea how the HD950 would compare against the XBOX360 DVD player. I was eyeing it previously but decided to bump my budget a bit and get the Pioneer DV-S969 instead. Getting it for a very good price thumbup.gif

Guys i found these two LA40M61B (LCD) and the SP-50L6HX/SP-50L7HX (DLP)

The LCD didnt say anything about 720p/1080i.
And the samsung site didnt have any price at all.. Is DLP more expansive? I went on wiki and found out that DLP has many problems. But plasma has a 60,000 - 50,000 hrs life span. Does that Leave me with LCD? Putting aside CRT

DLP is a lot cheaper than plasmas and LCDs of the same size. The downside of DLP and LCD projection TV is that you need to change the bulb every 2000-3000 hours and it'll cost around RM1000 a pop.

50-60k hours lifespan is a lot actually. Lets say you have the TV on 8 hours per day, 50k hours is 17 years! If I were to get a big screen TV, my first two choices would be DLP/LCD projection or plasma icon_rolleyes.gif

The DV-S969 is retailing at about RM2500. I'm getting it from a forumer (htkaki) for RM1650 only brows.gif

Yeah i saw the lifespan on wiki. it seems 10 hrs = 15 years.. so plasma is better for longer use? Is there any significant diff between Hitachi/ Panasonic/ Samsung/ Pioneer?

Last question. smile.gif

Yeah, if you don't want to worry about the TV then plasma is the way to go. They're all using different panels and technologies so the best way to decide is still to view them yourself. When choosing, make sure that it's HD with a resolution of 1280x720 or higher and have at least one HDMI port.

Ask as many questions as you like. There's many knowledgeable forumers here who are ready to answer them laugh.gif

I should do some research myself actually before asking or maybe actually visiting a TV store. So i found some free time today and went to subang parade and went to the Electronics place there (where Toys r' us used to be).

I found out that DLP is really bad at certain angle. And its very reflective making it glaring. LCD.. is kinda ok. But Plasma is very clear. And Of course Plasma is very expansive.

Now its between Samsung PS-50P5H and Pioneer PDP-5060HD. But pioneer is 24k and samsung is 17k only. I dont remember exact figures. Its a lot of diff (pricetag). I'll leave it to them to decide.

edit: Umm.. I think its the 42" not 50" for both

tripleB... most of the ppl here go with sony or philips for their HDTV... since you're using toshiba... would you mind highlighting us on the performance of ur tv? how is it compared with Sony DRC or Philips Pixel Plus/PP2... I'm sure you've compared them before making your purchase rite? thanks...
*
Wow, been too busy with work lately, totally forgot to check here often. Well, if you want to compare it with the Sony (model KV-DB29M61 I presume?), I'd say the Toshiba looks better in terms of clarity. On the other hand, the Sony seems to have better colour, if I'm purely judging using a PS2 (Tekken 5 in particular).

As for Philips? Let's just say I'm not too big of a fan, since I have a bad experience with Philips beforehand. That's not to say it doesn't look nice, though.

QUOTE(Matrix @ May 26 2006, 02:04 PM)
Pls get that right, This isn't a SONY's exclusive idea. It is the ENTIRE industry. MS is a big advocator of DRM. Basically, they're just finding new ways to limits our rights and make their pockets bigger.

Screw em all.
*
Whoops, my bad. I'm aware that no single company gets to say anything regarding a format standard. After all, DRM is a genuine concern on the PC side of things, hence MS. What I meant to say, was that DRM is one of the reasons Sony is taking it slow with Blu-ray.

Piracy notwithstanding, Sony (along with Blu-ray) is going to royally screw millions of early HDTV adopters, myself included. Unless Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) is going to bleed my AV senses to submission compared to standard DVDs, I'm not plunking down my money on it just yet.
