I am currently a holder of Maybank's Basic Savings Account. I wish to use the Maybank Visa Debit (Cherry card). Are these the steps to apply for one:
1/ Close the Basic Savings Account and reopen it as a Kawanku Savings Account (What is the difference between these two)?
1/ Close the Basic Savings Account and reopen it as a Kawanku Savings Account (What is the difference between these two)?
Basic Savings Account is regulated by BNM while Kawanku Savings is a house product.

2/ Surrender my current ATM card to change to a Visa Debit Card?
Only if you close your Basic Savings Account.

3/ Will there be any conversion charges imposed?
RM12.

My understanding is that RM8 is the annual fee if require more than 4 withdrawals per month,
Yes. Alternatively, you can still choose the annual fee free option and make as many times of ATM cash withdrawals you'll like without incurring any charges by making sure you have at least RM5000 in your account when the excess withdrawal occurs.

and an additional RM12 for ATM card to Debit Card conversion.
Yes.

4/ Do I need to do all these at the branch which I opened my account?
Not necessarily. If you're in a different area, for example your existing account holding branch is Malacca but now you're in Kuala Lumpur and intend to open the account in Kuala Lumpur, you can open the account at any Maybank branches in Kuala Lumpur. Someone here said that he managed to open the account without the need to close his existing account prior because it's in different state.

As for the new Cherry Card, does it:
1/ Act exactly like an ATM card?
1/ Act exactly like an ATM card?
Yes.

2/ Understood there's only 4 withdrawals per month. Is every online transaction/card swipe considered as a withdrawal?
Yes. 1 ATM cash withdrawal is counted as 1 withdrawal. You are allowed to perform as many online transactions as you want as there is no restriction to this. Daily limit still apply though.

3/ Be embossed with the cardholder's name? (Average wait time? Or is this option not available?)
No such option.

4/ No top-up required and charge directly to the savings account?
Correct.
