Hi guys i got just myself a MS, Ace smile.gif
Im keeping it upstairs in my living room and am trying to train it to peepoo in my toilet. usually after food it will cry and run around its cage like it wants to come out. That signals pee/poo time thn ill bring it to my toilet and let it do its business. Im not letting it run freely around yet cos it hasnt taken its full vaccination but when i do, i wish it would always go to my toilet to peepoo. how can i train it to do tht before i let it run around freely? thanks smile.gif
Also, i soak Ace's food so its softer for him but its makes his beard really wet, should i remove the water after the food is soft?
And the treats that i use are kinda hard, i only give it half now when i try to make it sit by its back down and spamming "SIT!". When it does sit i quickly give it. Is this the right way? Btw the treat looks too hard for my 7 weeks old pup. Or is it not?

Congrats on your new pup! Show us some photos of him when you can smile.gif

The only way to house train is to have consistency...try to bring him to the toilet every single time you see him showing signs of wanting to pee or poop. The more consistent you are, the faster he learns to go there. It takes a while, so one has to be very patient.

For the wet beard thing, when Scottie was little, I would just put enough water to soak the kibbles and not drown them in water. When Scottie finishes eating, I would use a damp handkerchief to wipe his beard clean. You could also use wet tissues to clean the beard after meals...I do that now with Scottie too smile.gif

There are other kinds of treats to get if you feel the treats are too hard for your pup. smile.gif If you want to train 'Sit' without having to push the pup's bum on the floor, hold the treat up above the head (but not too high until he stands up). Slowly move the treat backwards towards the back and say 'Sit'. In order to adjust to look at the treat, the pup usually would sit down smile.gif The minute he does that, praise madly and immediately reward with the treat. Do this consistently enough, and he will get the idea. Hope that helps you a little!

As long as your house has no other pets that are sick, I don't see a problem with letting your pup go about the house (with supervision of course). I let Scottie wander about the house too when he was little. I only let him out of the house after he has gotten all his vaccinations.

The spray thing may or may not be effective...it's supposed to resemble the smell of pee or poop when you spray at the designated area. I tried it with Scottie before...doesn't really work with him, but there are others who mentioned that it does, so I guess it depends on your pup I guess.

Hey congrats with a new puppy, nice name!!!

I was as excited last month when i brought mine home tongue.gif
As of today, my pup is toilet trained, knows how to sit, wait n shake hand laugh.gif

Toilet training:
Use positive way in training. Place the wee wee pad/newspaper on the floor of the toilet so she'd know which corner you'd want her to pee/poo. If possible, block off unnecessary parts of the toilet so that he/she wont go wonder off n forget to pee. Since he's new to you, if he does a mistake in the house, don't beat him... take the wee wee pad/newspaper n soak the pee , then place it in the toilet n let him smell it. Make sure you clean up the area he soiled.
Take him to the toilet at certain times of the day such as: after he wake up (morning/naps), after drinking water, after playing.
When you take him to the toilet, just when he's about to pee, say 'Wee', then praise him N GIVE HIM A TREAT. I guarantee after a few times, he'll wee there whenever u bring him into the toilet. Stop giving the treats once he's very familiar with it (maybe by 1-2 weeks), just praise enough.

Food:
I had the same problem... used to soak the food but very messy (did it for 2 days oni)... so now i don't soak it any more, no problem smile.gif
If you feel he eat too fast... then hand feed him half the food, then place the bowl on the floor for him to finish the rest on his own. This is also a good chance to teach him how to sit by using his meals. Use the way Rayne explained, i used the same way to teach my puppy smile.gif
But do note... don't spam the word 'sit'... you're making him ignore the few times you said in the beginning. Say the word 'sit' only when you see his bum is about to hit the floor.

Treats:
I break the treats to half too for my pup... but do note... don't over feed him! treats are food too... It's safer if you separate the amount of treats for the day so you won't accidentaly give him too much.

Biting:
This... i dunu how to help you... mine still biting lol! plus my pup very very snappy... while she walk beside me, she will take any chance she have to bite my leg sweat.gif
But it's also a good opportunity for you to teach him not to bite too hard... which is important. It's called biting inhibition.
My pup still bites (now 3+ mths old d) but not hard... which is good coz Schnauzer teeth are sharp!!!

Hi, found a female schnauzer recently in usj 2. She has salt pepper coat and knows basic commands as well. I brought her to the vet and comfirm shes only 1 year +. Shes really friendly and gets excited easily. Pls let me know if you guys know anyone that lost their ms around the area. If i couldnt find the owner i would have to find someone to adopt her ( i already have 3 dogs, otherwise i would keep her.)

No problem with letting the pup go ungroomed smile.gif The Schnauzer look is just the breed standard (which is hand stripped, and most of us do clipping, so that's already not meeting the standard tongue.gif). Since most of us don't show our dogs anyways, it's not a problem for them to be ungroomed until you want to change their look. Just make sure the fur between the paws and between the eyes are trimmed so that your pup can get a better grip on the floor and not get lots of gunk in the eyes from the fur poking it smile.gif

Congrats congrats!!! rclxms.gif
What's her name?

Yeah... when i got my pup also she is ungroomed... originally i wanted to leave it like that, coz look cuter... like teddy bear. But then very hot for her coz she don't stay in aircond room. If she's staying in aircond room then should be ok gua...
But if ungroomed oso ok gua, got many ppl leave their pups ungroomed until finish vaccination... just see your pref. If she's hot she'll know how to cool herself down... like lie down on the marble floor or sit under the fan.

If you happen to want to groom her... a piece of advice... dont send her to the pet shop to groom. I did that mistake, but lucky she never catch any virus. I just oni groom her second time, Jason help me. Very good service plus he comes to your house, so no need worry she get exposed to any virus/bact.

Good luck in the training, and take good care of her! Such a great addition to the family before CNY.
Hope that we'll have a gathering soon for all our puppies and the adults to meet up icon_rolleyes.gif

There's no limit to how long to feed fish oil...it's just a supplement anyways, so if you feel like your pup's coat is good and you want to stop, you can just stop feeding it. I feed Scottie everyday, but the thing to remember is to get fish body oil / salmon oil..NOT cod liver oil. Also, note that the dosage of the EPA + DHA should be around 300mg combined per capsule of 1000mg (you can find this on the bottle label). Feed this amount for every 15kg of your dog's weight.

Scottie is about 6-7kg, so 300mg of EPA + DHA is about all that I feed. The capsules I have are only 200mg EPA + DHA, so I give him and Kenji 2 capsules everyday.

Alternatively, if you find this very troublesome, you could get the MyBeau supplement from the pet stores. I've tried it with Scottie & Kenji and they do quite well on that too...just follow the instructions on how much to give per meal smile.gif

Oh, I didn't know you used human shampoo to bathe your pup...I think you should get a good dog shampoo instead of using human shampoo. Our skin and the dog's skin are quite different, so they might not take too well with human shampoo. Currently, I use the Pet Esthe Charcoal shampoo for Scottie...it's quite good, but a bit pricey (about RM60 per bottle - but this lasts Scottie for almost a year already). We've also tried the Spa brand...the smell is VERY nice, but it doesn't last so long as I wanted to. Still, Scottie didn't have any adverse reaction to it, so it's good enough smile.gif

You can get salmon oil from most pharmacies or at health stores like GNC. They can get a bit pricey, but sometimes there will be discounts, so look out for those. smile.gif Most important is to look at the labels and make sure that it's only salmon / fish body oil, nothing else. Look for EPA + DHA amount too. It should be around 300mg for a 1000mg capsule, usually.
